Book excerpt: This primer provides a foundation for understanding the role of economic analysis in highway decision making. It is oriented toward state and local officials who have responsibility for assuring that limited resources get targeted to their best uses and who must publicly account for their decisions. Economic analysis is presented as an integral component of a comprehensive infrastructure management methodology that takes a long-term view of infrastructure performance and cost. The primer encompasses a full range of economic issues, including economic fundamentals, life-cycle cost analysis, benefit-cost analysis, forecasting traffic for benefit calculations, risk analysis and economic impact analysis.

Book Forecasting Freight Traffic Between the U S and Mexico

Download or read book Forecasting Freight Traffic Between the U S and Mexico written by Yolanda Yulan Fang and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to use publicly available data to develop predictive models for transport mode and Mexican destination decisions for shipments from various U.S. regions. Aggregate logit models have been calibrated for three commodities: machinery, electronics, and automobiles. A profile of Mexico and its industries is presented along with a review of past efforts in freight demand forecasting. The data set of aggregate shipments used in the model estimation is comprised of origin, destination, commodity type, mode of transport across the border, and value. Destination attributes, such as population, employment, number of firms in the industry, and number of shippers and warehouses, are also included.

Book Modelling Freight Transport

Download or read book Modelling Freight Transport written by Lorant Tavasszy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freight Transport Modelling is a unique new reference book that provides insight into the state-of-the-art of freight modelling. Focusing on models used to support public transport policy analysis, Freight Transport Modelling systematically introduces the latest freight transport modelling approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models. As freight transport has grown exponentially in recent decades, policymakers now need to include freight flows in quantitative evaluations of transport systems. Whereas early freight modelling practice was inspired by passenger transport models, by now it has developed its separate stream of methods and techniques inspired by disciplines such as economic geography and supply chain management. Besides summarizing the latest achievements in fundamental research, this book describes the state of practice and advises practitioners on how to cope with typical challenges such as limitations in data availability. - Uniquely focused book exploring the key issues and logistics of freight transport modelling - Highlights the latest approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models - Summarizes fundamental research into freight transport modeling, as well as current practices and advice for practitioners facing day-to-day challenges

Book Framework and Tools for Estimating Benefits of Specific Freight Network Investments

Download or read book Framework and Tools for Estimating Benefits of Specific Freight Network Investments written by and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report provides a comprehensive analytical framework and related tools that private-sector freight transportation modes and public-sector transportation interests can use to estimate private and public benefits to evaluate potential freight infrastructure investments. Using interviews with transportation planners and an extensive review of prior research and a review of current methods used to assess freight benefits or prioritize improvement projects, the research developed a freight evaluation framework with three main functions: (1) to enhance public planning and decision-making processes regarding freight; (2) to supplement benefit/cost assessment with distributional impact measures; and (3) to advance public-private cooperation. The framework is capable of handling projects that span all of the different modes and able to assess benefits from a variety of project types, including those that improve freight operations, as well as generate more capacity through infrastructure expansion. The research, by developing a practical set of formats for information collection, will support public-private agency discussions by helping all parties understand the wide range of perspectives and interests in potential freight investments."--Pub. desc.
