He was trained in the US in 1963 to fly the U-2 spy plane and returned to Taiwan to begin regular reconnaissance flights over Mainland. The US Central Intelligence Agency worked closely with the Taiwan Air Force and provided analysis of the photographs taken over Mainland China. Major Yeh was shot down on his third mission. The Government of Taiwan was aware of his survival but refused to acknowledge him. Instead, they told his family, including a young wife of less than one year, that he was dead. The book chronicles his recovery from injuries, attempts by the Communists at brainwashing, his work on a collective farm and his ultimate release almost 20 years later.
