Book excerpt: A modern Thanksgiving classic about an immigrant girl who comes to identify with the story of the Pilgrims, as she seeks religious freedom and a home in a new land. As Molly nears her first Thanksgiving in the New World, she doesn't find much to be thankful for. Her classmates giggle at her Yiddish accent and make fun of her unfamiliarity with American ways. Molly's embarassed when her mother helps with a class Thanksgiving project by making a little doll that looks more like a Russian refugee than a New England Pilgrim. But the tiny modern-day pilgrim just might help Molly to find a place for herself in America. The touching story tells how recent immigrant Molly leads her third-grade class to discover that it takes all kinds of pilgrims to make a Thanksgiving. Originally published in 1983, Molly's Pilgrim inspired the 1986 Academy Award-winning live-action short film.

Book excerpt: In Free Pilgrim 3, the author returns to his place of birth, “The Land Below The Wind.” Even though he had made similar trips back before, yet strangely he discovered that he still arrived “where he had started and known the place for the first time.” His insightful writing clearly illustrates both the divine and mundane nature of humanity. We are all one people, though separated by great distances, continents, and millenniums, that humanity shines through in our great works, beauties, and cultures of the world around us. With another ten adventures, Free Pilgrim 3 will awaken your drive to discover new places, learn about a new culture and perhaps have a little more understanding of who we are as a human collective. While there is nothing more informative and transformative than taking a physical pilgrimage to incredible places, these books are as close as one can get without leaving the armchairs and setting out on our own. But if you are fortunate enough to have the inclination and the time, these narratives may inspire you to do just that.

Pilgrim is Timothy Findley’s masterwork, a finalist for the Giller Prize, and a national bestseller that has smashed the author’s own impressive sales records. It is 1912 and Pilgrim has been admitted to the Burghölzli Psychiatric Clinic in Zürich, Switzerland, having failed—once again—to commit suicide. Over the next two years, it is up to Carl Jung, self-professed mystical scientist of the mind, to help Pilgrim unlock his unconsciousness, etched as it is with myriad sufferings and hopes of history. Is Pilgrim mad, or is he condemned to live forever, witness to the terrible tragedy and beauty of the human condition? Both intimate and expansive in its scope, with an absorbing parade of characters—mythic, fictional and historical—Pilgrim is a fiercely original and powerful story from one of our most distinguished artists.

Book Pilgrim s Wilderness

Download or read book Pilgrim s Wilderness written by Tom Kizzia and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Wild meets Helter Skelter in this riveting true story of a modern-day homesteading family in the deepest reaches of the Alaskan wilderness—and of the chilling secrets of its maniacal, spellbinding patriarch. When Papa Pilgrim, his wife, and their fifteen children appeared in the Alaska frontier outpost of McCarthy, their new neighbors saw them as a shining example of the homespun Christian ideal. But behind the family's proud piety and beautiful old-timey music lay Pilgrim's dark past: his strange connection to the Kennedy assassination and a trail of chaos and anguish that followed him from Dallas and New Mexico. Pilgrim soon sparked a tense confrontation with the National Park Service fiercely dividing the community over where a citizen’s rights end and the government’s power begins. As the battle grew more intense, the turmoil in his brood made it increasingly difficult to tell whether his children were messianic followers or hostages in desperate need of rescue. In this powerful piece of Americana, written with uncommon grace and high drama, veteran Alaska journalist, Tom Kizzia uses his unparalleled access to capture an era-defining clash between environmentalists and pioneers ignited by a mesmerizing sociopath who held a town and a family captive.

Book Pilgrim s Process

Download or read book Pilgrim s Process written by David R. Peel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the intellectual journey of a Christian minister and theologian. Starting with his discovery of God through a love of the natural world, David Peel's encounter with thinkers from his Reformed tradition and extensive ecumenical involvement takes him to a revisionary theology which meets his attempt to integrate a scientific background with the Christian faith. Essays written during his career illustrate the path he has taken. The topics covered include theological method; the centrality of theology for the church's life and work; a sacramental view of ministry; the missional church; biblical authority; nonconformity's gifts to the contemporary church; and theological education. Peel's theological approach is as critical of inadequate theologies inherited from the past as it is determined to construct a Christian narrative which satisfies twin requirements: first, being congruent with the Jesus tradition; and secondly, convincing the minds, reaching the hearts, and driving the commitments of contemporary people. Both ministers and church members are challenged to view their own theological journeys as God-given vocations.
