Book Approximation of Free Discontinuity Problems

Download or read book Approximation of Free Discontinuity Problems written by Andrea Braides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionals involving both volume and surface energies have a number of applications ranging from Computer Vision to Fracture Mechanics. In order to tackle numerical and dynamical problems linked to such functionals many approximations by functionals defined on smooth functions have been proposed (using high-order singular perturbations, finite-difference or non-local energies, etc.) The purpose of this book is to present a global approach to these approximations using the theory of gamma-convergence and of special functions of bounded variation. The book is directed to PhD students and researchers in calculus of variations, interested in approximation problems with possible applications.

Book Geometric Measure Theory and Free Boundary Problems

Download or read book Geometric Measure Theory and Free Boundary Problems written by Guido De Philippis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers contemporary aspects of geometric measure theory with a focus on applications to partial differential equations, free boundary problems and water waves. It is based on lectures given at the 2019 CIME summer school “Geometric Measure Theory and Applications – From Geometric Analysis to Free Boundary Problems” which took place in Cetraro, Italy, under the scientific direction of Matteo Focardi and Emanuele Spadaro. Providing a description of the structure of measures satisfying certain differential constraints, and covering regularity theory for Bernoulli type free boundary problems and water waves as well as regularity theory for the obstacle problems and the developments leading to applications to the Stefan problem, this volume will be of interest to students and researchers in mathematical analysis and its applications.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "In this paper we give a partial answer to a conjecture of De Giorgi, namely we prove that in dimension two the regular part of the discontinuity set of a local minimizer of the homogeneous Mumford-Shah functional is analytic with the exception of at most a countable number of isolated points."

Book Free Boundary Problems

Download or read book Free Boundary Problems written by Pierluigi Colli and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many phenomena of interest for applications are represented by differential equations which are defined in a domain whose boundary is a priori unknown, and is accordingly named a "free boundary". A further quantitative condition is then provided in order to exclude indeterminacy. Free boundary problems thus encompass a broad spectrum which is represented in this state-of-the-art volume by a variety of contributions of researchers in mathematics and applied fields like physics, biology and material sciences. Special emphasis has been reserved for mathematical modelling and for the formulation of new problems.

Book Solvability Regularity and Optimal Control of Boundary Value Problems for PDEs

Download or read book Solvability Regularity and Optimal Control of Boundary Value Problems for PDEs written by Pierluigi Colli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers contributions in the field of partial differential equations, with a focus on mathematical models in phase transitions, complex fluids and thermomechanics. These contributions are dedicated to Professor Gianni Gilardi on the occasion of his 70th birthday. It particularly develops the following thematic areas: nonlinear dynamic and stationary equations; well-posedness of initial and boundary value problems for systems of PDEs; regularity properties for the solutions; optimal control problems and optimality conditions; feedback stabilization and stability results. Most of the articles are presented in a self-contained manner, and describe new achievements and/or the state of the art in their line of research, providing interested readers with an overview of recent advances and future research directions in PDEs.

Book VII Hotine Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy

Download or read book VII Hotine Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy written by Nico Sneeuw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hotine-Marussi Symposium is the core meeting of a “think thank”, a group scientists in the geodetic environment working on theoretical and methodological subjects, while maintaining the foundations of geodesy to the proper level by corresponding to the strong advancements improved by technological development in the field of ICT, electronic computing, space technology, new measurement devices etc. The proceedings of the symposium cover a broad area of arguments which integrate the foundations of geodesy as a science. The common feature of the papers therefore is not on the object, but rather in the high mathematical standards with which subjects are treated.

Book Topics on Concentration Phenomena and Problems with Multiple Scales

Download or read book Topics on Concentration Phenomena and Problems with Multiple Scales written by Andrea Braides and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of variational problems showing multi-scale behaviour with oscillation or concentration phenomena is a challenging topic of very active research. This volume collects lecture notes on the asymptotic analysis of such problems when multi-scale behaviour derives from scale separation in the passage from atomistic systems to continuous functionals, from competition between bulk and surface energies, from various types of homogenization processes, and on concentration effects in Ginzburg-Landau energies and in subcritical growth problems.

Book Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations written by Luigi Ambrosio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-01-24 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the summer school in Pisa in September 1996, Luigi Ambrosio and Norman Dancer each gave a course on the geometric problem of evolution of a surface by mean curvature, and degree theory with applications to PDEs respectively. This self-contained presentation accessible to PhD students bridged the gap between standard courses and advanced research on these topics. The resulting book is divided accordingly into 2 parts, and neatly illustrates the 2-way interaction of problems and methods. Each of the courses is augmented and complemented by additional short chapters by other authors describing current research problems and results.

Book A Variational Approach to Fracture and Other Inelastic Phenomena

Download or read book A Variational Approach to Fracture and Other Inelastic Phenomena written by Gianpietro Del Piero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes a number of mathematical models for fracture of growing difficulty. All models are treated in a unified way, based on incremental energy minimization. They differ from each other by the assumptions made on the inelastic part of the total energy, here called the "cohesive energy". Each model describes a specific aspect of material response, and particular care is devoted to underline the correspondence of each model to the experiments. The content of the book is a re-elaboration of the lectures delivered at the First Sperlonga Summer School on Mechanics and Engineering Sciences in September 2011. In the year and a half elapsed after the course, the material has been revised and enriched with new and partially unpublished results. Significant additions have been introduced in the occasion of the course "The variational approach to fracture and other inelastic phenomena", delivered at SISSA, Trieste, in March 2013. The Notes reflect a research line carried on by the writer over the years, addressed to a comprehensive description of the many aspects of the phenomenon of fracture, and to its relations with other phenomena, such as the formation of microstructure and the changes in the material’s strength induced by plasticity and damage. Reprinted from the Journal of Elasticity, volume 112, issue 1, 2013.
