After the destruction of the Armada, in 1588, the maritime power of Spain steadily declined, and the capture of her treasure fleet by the Dutch in 1628, and the destruction of her naval fleet in the Downs, left her West Indian colonies without other protection than their own walls and fortresses afl'orded. About this time the abritrary decree that the colonists should restrict their commerce with Spain to the port of Seville - the monopoly of which the needy govern ment had sold - gave rise to an extensive smuggling trams, very profitable to the colonists and the foreign adventurers who carried it on. Until it does, we must expect to see peoples fighting against tyranny, and standing in armed guardian ship over their hard-won rights. Such is the case with Cuba. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Cuba: Her Struggles for Liberty, the Cause, Crisis and Destiny of the Pearl of the Antilles The first words that invite the eye in a book are the last written. When the preface is prepared the work is finished. This volume is up-to-date, but the story of Cuba is not all told. The tragedy goes on. The triumph is to come. The logic of all history contemplates the conclusion we confidently declare. It is, that the end of foreign domination over the discoveries of Columbus and his followers, draws near. Cuba is the splendid stage on which is performed the last act of the drama of Spain in America. It is Spain's war with her children. All nations are spectators - our own with the greater share of interest and sympathy. It is as the first President Harrison wrote of our revolution - "hard, hard indeed, is the struggle for liberty and the contest for independence!" Book Contested Community

Download or read book Contested Community written by Miriam Herrera Jerez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Contested Community, the authors analyze the Chinese immigrant community in Cuba between the years 1900–1968. While popular literature of the era portrayed the diasporic group as a closed, inassimilable ethnic enclave, closer inspection instead reveals numerous economic, political, and ethnic divisions. As with all organizations, asymmetrical power relations permeated Havana’s Barrio Chino and the larger Chinese Cuban community. The authors of Contested Community use difficult-to-access materials from Cuba’s national archive to offer a unique and insightful interpretation of a little-understood immigrant group.
