Book Desire and Pursuit of the Whole

Download or read book Desire and Pursuit of the Whole written by Frederick Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a description of Venice at the time when it served as an asylum for undesirables from all over Europe, as well as erotic vacation destinations for some, in much the same way Thailand and similar countries are today. It stands as a scurrilous sensual testament to his fervent affection for the physical beauty of the city of Venice. It was first published posthumously in 1934 in a heavily edited version and finally, in an unexpurgated edition by Quartet in 1993. This is the first annotated edition with details of the people libelled in the book.

Book The Weird of the Wanderer

Download or read book The Weird of the Wanderer written by Frederick William Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick William Rolfe (1860-1913), better known as Baron Corvo, and also calling himself Frederick William Serafino Austin Lewis Mary Rolfe, was an English writer, novelist, artist, fantasist and eccentric. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1886 and was confirmed by Cardinal Manning. With his conversion came a strongly felt vocation to priesthood which persisted throughout his life despite being constantly frustrated and never realised. He was an occasional contributor to the Yellow Book published by John Lane; these contributions consisted of a series called Stories Toto Told Me (1898), humourous retellings of Italian peasant legends about the saints, later collected in book form with that title and with a larger sequel, In His Own Image. These made his early reputation, such as it was, and this was enlarged by his Chronicles of the House of Borgia (1901), a serious if idiosyncratic historical study in refulgently Baroque prose. His other works include: Tarcissus the Boy Martyr of Rome (1901), Nicholas Crabbe (1903), Hadrian the Seventh (1904), Don Tarquinio (1905), Don Renato (1907) and The Weird of the Wanderer (1912).

Book excerpt: Hadrian the Seventh is novel of extreme wish-fulfillment developed out of an article he wrote on the Papal Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Leo XIII. The prologue introduces us to George Arthur Rose – a failed candidate for the priesthood denied his vocation by the machinations and bungling of the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical machinery, and now living alone with his yellow cat. Rose is visited by two prominent churchmen, one a Cardinal Archbishop. The two propose to right the wrongs done to him, ordain him a priest, and take him to Rome where the Conclave to elect the new Pope has reached deadlock. When he arrives in Rome he finds that the Cardinals have been inspired, divinely or otherwise, to offer him the Papacy. He accepts, and since the only previous English Pope was Adrian (or Hadrian) IV, he takes the name Hadrian VII.

Book excerpt: The trajectory of his turbulent life was breathtaking, his range of experience vast. In this evocative book, the first biographical over view of Corvo's world in almost 40 years, noted Corvo scholar Robert Scoble examines the writer's character and motivations. Scoble has drawn on his three decades of research in hitherto undisturbed library archives and troves of family letters to produce these essays in microhistory. He shows how these lives intersected in the story of a great eccentric who assumed the bogus title Baron Corvo and spent his final years scandalising Venice.

A shabbily-dressed bookseller who lived in a garden hovel. A group of university librarians who specialised in arcane literature and erotica. A biographer who spent lavishly the subscriptions of his fellow club members. A collector whose single- mindedness finally overwhelmed him. What all these men had in common was an unshakeable obsession with the life and work of the English writer Frederick Rolfe, or 'Baron Corvo'.

Book excerpt: In 2014, The Guardian placed "Hadrian the Seventh" on the list of the 100 best novels written in English. A historical novel by the English novelist Frederick Rolfe, it is based on his essay the Papal Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Leo XIII. It tells about an English priest that got invited by two Catholic priests to Rome, where the Conclave was gathered to elect the new Pope. Suddenly, the Conclave gives this position to him, and since the only previous English Pope was Adrian (or Hadrian) IV, he takes the name Hadrian VII. He is an unconventional pope - a chain smoker wishing to reform the church against fierce opposition from the established Roman Catholic hierarchy. Will he manage to stand the plots and intrigues, and is his reform needed? Those are the matters for readers to discover.
