Book Freddy and the Rock Who Becomes a Sir

Download or read book Freddy and the Rock Who Becomes a Sir written by Philip Heubach and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Cyrus the Great Horned Owl would say, my second book is released at the perfect time. For those who read We Live in a Jungle, if you liked Rapid Roberta, the fastest, zigzaggiest rabbit in the jungle, you will love Freddy. Freddy is a fun-loving creature who does not know who he is. (Do you know someone who might fit this description?) When only a baby pup, he was separated from his family by a violent storm. Three days later and a thousand miles from home, he was rescued by two caring dolphins. A year later, Freddy, with their loving support, is going to leave the only home he has known in an effort to find his real family. During his long and dangerous journey, Freddy will meet several strangers who share their knowledge with one curious critter. So, too, there are mean-tempered creatures of the sea that will challenge Freddys survival. (Well, we shall see). Although this story is not as intellectually challenging as my first story, it is for the mature reader and all ages. You will find this story mentally stimulating and a joy to read. Heres a friendly challenge. Within the story, there are at least three factors that go beyond the laws of Mother Nature. See if you can discover what they are.

Book Rock the Nation

  • Author : Roberto Avant-Mier
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2010-05-06

Download or read book Rock the Nation written by Roberto Avant-Mier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock the Nation analyzes Latino/a identity through rock 'n' roll music and its deep Latin/o history. By linking rock music to Latinos and to music from Latin America, the author argues that Latin/o music, people, and culture have been central to the development of rock music as a major popular music form, in spite of North American racial logic that marginalizes Latino/as as outsiders, foreigners, and always exotic. According to the author, the Latin/o Rock Diaspora illuminates complex identity issues and interesting paradoxes with regard to identity politics, such as nationalism. Latino/as use rock music for assimilation to mainstream North American culture, while in Latin America, rock music in Spanish is used to resist English and the hegemony of U.S. culture. Meanwhile, singing in English and adopting U.S. popular culture allows youth to resist the hegemonic nationalisms of their own countries. Thus, throughout the Americas, Latino/as utilize rock music for assimilation to mainstream national culture(s), for resistance to the hegemony of dominant culture(s), and for mediating the negotiation of Latino/a identities.

Its roster of recorded musicians includes Lightnin’ Hopkins, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Junior Parker, Clifton Chenier, Sir Douglas Quintet, 13th Floor Elevators, Freddy Fender, Kinky Friedman, Ray Benson, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child, and many, many more. In House of Hits, Andy Bradley and Roger Wood chronicle the fascinating history of Gold Star/SugarHill, telling a story that effectively covers the postwar popular music industry. They describe how Houston’s lack of zoning ordinances allowed founder Bill Quinn’s house studio to grow into a large studio complex, just as SugarHill’s willingness to transcend musical boundaries transformed it into of one of the most storied recording enterprises in America. The authors offer behind-the-scenes accounts of numerous hit recordings, spiced with anecdotes from studio insiders and musicians who recorded at SugarHill. Bradley and Wood also place significant emphasis on the role of technology in shaping the music and the evolution of the music business. They include in-depth biographies of regional stars and analysis of the various styles of music they represent, as well as a list of all of Gold Star/SugarHill’s recordings that made the Billboard charts and extensive selected historical discographies of the studio’s recordings.

Book Arcade Britannia

Download or read book Arcade Britannia written by Alan Meades and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the British amusement arcade from the 1800s to the present. Amusement arcades are an important part of British culture, yet discussions of them tend to be based on American models. Alan Meades, who spent his childhood happily playing in British seaside arcades, presents the history of the arcade from its origins in traveling fairs of the 1800s to the present. Drawing on firsthand accounts of industry members and archival sources, including rare photographs and trade publications, he tells the story of the first arcades, the people who made the machines, the rise of video games, and the legislative and economic challenges spurred by public fears of moral decline. Arcade Britannia highlights the differences between British and North American arcades, especially in terms of the complex relationship between gambling and amusements. He also underlines Britain’s role in introducing coin-operated technologies into Europe, as well as the industry’s close links to America and, especially, Japan. He shows how the British arcade is a product of centuries of public play, gambling, entrepreneurship, and mechanization. Examining the arcade’s history through technological, social, cultural, biographic, and legislative perspectives, he describes a pendulum shift between control and liberalization, as well as the continued efforts of concerned moralists to limit and regulate public play. Finally, he recounts the impact on the industry of legislative challenges that included vicious taxation, questions of whether copyright law applied to video-game code, and the peculiar moment when every arcade game in Britain was considered a cinema.
