Book excerpt: In March 1971 an off-duty special police constable found the macabre remains of a body...The skull, protruding from the ground, revealed the skeleton of a man who had been violently murdered and buried in a shallow grave by the river Trent in Staffordshire. The naked body, except for a pair of pink socks and a wedding ring, yielded little evidence and to this day has resisted all police efforts and appeals to the public to identify him. It remains an unsolved murder of an unknown man who, for want of a better name, is called Fred the Head.Michael Posner has been a court reporter for over 40 years and is well qualified to tell the story. Using police sources and pictures, he relates what is known about Fred, as well as other incidents of murders that have never been resolved. (Perhaps you'll have your own theories by the time you reach the last page.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the story behind the award-winning film Judas and the Black Messiah On December 4, 1969, attorney Jeff Haas was in a police lockup in Chicago, interviewing Fred Hampton's fiancÉe. Deborah Johnson described how the police pulled her from the room as Fred lay unconscious on their bed. She heard one officer say, "He's still alive." She then heard two shots. A second officer said, "He's good and dead now." She looked at Jeff and asked, "What can you do?" The Assassination of Fred Hampton remains Haas's personal account of how he and People's Law Office partner Flint Taylor pursued Hampton's assassins, ultimately prevailing over unlimited government resources and FBI conspiracy. Fifty years later, Haas writes that there is still an urgent need for the revolutionary systemic changes Hampton was organizing to accomplish. Not only a story of justice delivered, this book spotlights Hampton as a dynamic community leader and an inspiration for those in the ongoing fight against injustice and police brutality.

Book The Fred Factor

Download or read book The Fred Factor written by Mark Sanborn and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2004-04-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The true story of an ordinary mail carrier whose approach to work and life has the power to transform the everyday into the extraordinary—now in an updated twentieth-anniversary edition “This beloved business classic has inspired millions of people over the years, and today Mark Sanborn’s transformative insights are more timely and necessary than ever.”—Jon Gordon, author of The Energy Bus and co-author of The Coffee Bean Meet Fred. In this timeless and powerful book, Mark Sanborn, member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, recounts the true story of Fred, an ordinary USPS carrier who introduced himself one day shortly after Sanborn had moved to a new home in Denver. Fred, however, was no average mailman. As Sanborn came to discover, Fred was the kind of worker who exemplifies everything “right” with customer service. Did people want packages left on the porch or prefer a notice to pick them up at the post office? Fred made sure he knew the answer. When another delivery service left a package at the wrong house, Fred shepherded it safely to the intended recipient. Others might have seen delivering mail as routine work, but Fred seized the chance to find meaning in the mundane, competing with himself every day to find opportunities to make his customers smile. We’ve all encountered people like Fred. In this deeply inspiring book, Sanborn illuminates the four basic principles anyone can use to bring fresh energy and creativity to our work and life: how to make a tangible difference every day, build stronger relationships, create real value for others without spending a penny, and constantly reinvent yourself. In this updated edition, Sanborn speaks to the seismic changes that have transformed the world of work in recent years—with employees increasingly hungry for purpose in their jobs—and outlines the book’s fresh applications. By following his principles, you, too, can find more excitement, fulfillment, and success in your career—and in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory, fly-on-the-wall collection of photographs and stories documenting Eddie Van Halen at work in his famed but seldom seen 5150 studio, from the 2004 reunion with Sammy Hagar through the 2007 reunion with David Lee Roth. “When kids ask me how it feels to be a rock star, I say, ‘I’m not a rock star. I’m not in it for the fame, I’m in it because I like to play.’” Eddie Van Halen A fortuitous call from a stranger in the middle of the night led to a once-in-a-lifetime assignment. The stranger was Eddie Van Halen. The assignment, as Eddie related it, was to “capture the truth. Show people how hard I work, because that’s the truth.” Having no idea where this would lead or in what form it might be shared, Andrew Bennett spent portions of the next two years relentlessly documenting everything that occurred inside Eddie’s sanctuary: from rehearsals, recording sessions, and revealing conversations, to vicious arguments, a brotherly brawl, and a wild heist attempt in the middle of the night. Bennett memorialized every square foot of that sacred space, every piece of equipment, and every guitar—including Eddie’s beloved Frankenstrat. Featuring more than two hundred photographs, and accompanied by intimate reflections on what the author witnessed, Eruption in the Canyon presents an incomparable portrait of one of the most revered artists in history.

Book Fred s Dilemma

  • ISBN : 1465381996
  • Pages : 163 pages

Download or read book Fred s Dilemma written by Terry Devlin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terry Devlin has been a Management Consultant in Christchurch, New Zealand since moving from England in 1973. After his wife, Joan, died in 1999, Terry took up a new dimension with teaching English to overseas students mainly from South Korea, Japan and China. He successfully completed a TESOL Course in 2001 and this complemented tertiary studies in English Language and Literature from Canterbury University where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree. Prior to that he was qualified and experienced in teaching management subjects and obtained a City and Guilds Teaching Diploma in England. The reason for taking up ESOL was that, while taking homestay students for many years, he realised that one essential skill missing from most language schools’ curricula was the ability to use the English language effectively. Strong on grammar but limited on usefulness! The English Conversation Centre started in 2000 and concentrated on Pronunciation, Reading, Speaking, Listening and Understanding. In looking for suitable material it was soon clear this was not available in the right form so Terry began creating his own exercises and writing his own stories for use in the classes. These range from Beginner, through Intermediate and to Advanced level and over all age groups. Callum and Oliver Devlin (right) are two of Terry’s three grandsons and they have done the illustrations for the books. The twins have shown an aptitude for the arts and this shines out from the excellent drawings.

Book Simple Treatments for Complex Problems

Download or read book Simple Treatments for Complex Problems written by Kimberly A. Driscoll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is a set of techniques that has proven to be efficacious in the treatment of chronic depression. This book describes ways in which it can be extended in the treatment of patients with a wide variety of psychological disorders and difficulties, in a wide variety of settings. Vivid case illustrations and session transcripts illuminate the authors' presentation of appropriate modifications and implementations of the basic approach for personality and anxiety disorders, behavior problems in children, couples distress, and anger. The approach is flexible, efficient, and simple to train. One chapter focuses on methods for helping parents to help their own children more effectively. CBASP has been shown to work both for patients with severe psychological symptoms and for those with more common everyday problems; both for those who are psychologically sophisticated and for those who are not. Simple Treatments for Complex Problems offers powerful new tools for the clinical armamentarium of mental health professionals who do psychotherapy, and the conceptual armamentarium of those who train them and study treatment effectiveness.
