Book excerpt: God called Fred A. Hill Jr. to teach and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the piney woods of East Texas. He was born on a farm just outside the sawmill town of Doucette, Texas in 1928. He is the youngest of five children born to Fred and Letha Hill. Fred Sr. was a lumber train engineer that brought logs into the Long-Bell Lumber Company mill and later ran his own sawmill. From these woods of Tyler County, Texas, God saved, filled with the Holy Spirit and called Fred Hill Jr. to proclaim the message of Jesus. Junior began his ministry as a young man preaching revivals in Texas. In 1953 he married Betty Jane Kiff, and was sent by God on a life's journey of Christian service. In what is now nearly seventy years of ministry, God provided avenues for powerful ministry throughout Texas, Louisiana, the mid-western states and California in revivals, camp-meetings and church pastorates. Stories of God's work through their ministry abound. Many lives are touched and changed by the Holy Spirit because of their obedient service to the Lord.Fred currently resides near Tomball, Texas with his wife Betty where they recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Though nearing 90, "Pastor" Hill still proclaims the life-giving message that Jesus saves! There are more stories of mercy and faith yet to be told!

The author takes you into Opert's world of spotting talent in both drivers and crew members: 20 future F1 drivers who drove for Opert on their way to F1, and future team owners like Barry Green and Dick Bennetts of WSR who cut their teeth with Opert. Read their stories and the adventures they had with this larger than life character, through to the tribulations of managing the ATS F1 team. Then the tragedy that turned him away from the sport after he was lured back to run a team, only to have his driver and friend, Olivier Chandon, killed during testing. Peter Hill met Fred Opert in the 1970s during Opert's championship winning years with Keke Rosberg. He has interviewed at length most of Opert's drivers, including Keke Rosberg, Alan Jones, Brian Redman and Bobby Rahal. He has written this biography with the co-operation of Opert's family, friends and ex-employees.

Book Ordinary Injustice

  • Author : Amy Bach
  • Publisher : Macmillan

  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Ordinary Injustice written by Amy Bach and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning lawyer-reporter, a radically new explanation for America’s failing justice system The stories of grave injustice are all too familiar: the lawyer who sleeps through a trial, the false confessions, the convictions of the innocent. Less visible is the chronic injustice meted out daily by a profoundly defective system. In a sweeping investigation that moves from small-town Georgia to upstate New York, from Chicago to Mississippi, Amy Bach reveals a judicial process so deeply compromised that it constitutes a menace to the people it is designed to serve. Here is the public defender who pleads most of his clients guilty; the judge who sets outrageous bail for negligible crimes; the prosecutor who brings almost no cases to trial; the court that works together to achieve a wrong verdict. Going beyond the usual explanations of bad apples and meager funding, Bach identifies an assembly-line approach that rewards shoddiness and sacrifices defendants to keep the court calendar moving, and she exposes the collusion between judge, prosecutor, and defense that puts the interests of the system above the obligation to the people. It is time, Bach argues, to institute a new method of checks and balances that will make injustice visible—the first and necessary step to any reform. Full of gripping human stories, sharp analyses, and a crusader’s sense of urgency, Ordinary Injustice is a major reassessment of the health of the nation’s courtrooms.

Book Tales from the Eagles Sideline

Download or read book Tales from the Eagles Sideline written by Gordon Forbes and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in their worst of seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles maintained their tradition of toughness. This toughness is exemplified by the greats who have put on the Eagles uniform-from legends like Chuck Bednarik and Steve Van Buren to modern-day heroes like Reggie White and Donovan McNabb. In Tales from the Eagles Sidelines, veteran football writer Gordon Forbes profiles the individuals who have thrilled Philadelphia fans since the team's inception in 1933 through its recent return to glory with McNabb at the helm. Forbes details how these men become legendary heroes, not only because of the championships they won but because of their hard-knocking style. They were relentless athletes playing in a city that has always appreciated hard, tough performers more than fancy steppers. And when the winter winds arrive and the Eagles are playing for something more than their paychecks, there is a wonderful love affair that spirals in the frosty air between the fans and their "iggles," as the team is called.Tales from the Eagles Sidelines recalls the great players and some of the not-so-great characters told in the form of flashbacks to another time. Some of the stories, like Vince Papale's Rocky-like adventures, are stirring to the soul. Others, like Fred Hill's courageous fight to save his leukemia-stricken daughter, sadden the mind. All of the individual tales, however, share a common bond. They are all about Eagles who wore the green, silver, and white and played in a very special city.
