It is also worthy of consideration as a campaign in the best tradition of American military annals. The ability of the Marines to fight their way through twelve Chinese divisions over a 78-mile mountain road in sub-zero weather cannot be explained by courage and endurance alone. It also owed to the high degree of professional forethought and skill as well as the "uncommon valor" expected of all Marines. A great deal of initiative was required of unit commanders, and tactics had to be improvised at times on the spur of the moment to meet unusual circumstances. But in the main, the victory was gained by firm discipline and adherence to time-tested military principles. Allowing for differences in arms, indeed, the Marines of 1950 used much the same fundamental tactics as those employed on mountain roads by Xenophon and his immortal Ten Thousand when they cut their way through Asiatic hordes to the Black Sea in the year 401 B. C. When the danger was greatest, the 1st Marine Division might have accepted an opportunity for air evacuation of troops after the destruction of weapons and supplies to keep them from falling into the enemy's hands. But there was never a moment's hesitation. Book excerpt: The pathologist who sees specimens from lesions of the serosal membranes (pleura, pericardium, peritoneum, and tunica vaginalis) is well aware that these cases, whether in the form of fluid cytologies, small biopsies, or major resections, pose differential diagnostic problems that are among the most difficult in anatomic pathology. The main problems involve the separation of malignant mesothelioma from benign mesothelial processes on the one hand and other malignant tumours (particularly primary and metastatic carcinomas) on the other. With these differential diagnoses in mind, the authors concentrate on the cytopathologic and histopathologic features of diffuse malignant mesothelioma, its many variants, and the other benign and malignant lesions to be distinguished from it. Histochemical, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular features of potential use in this differentiation are discussed and illustrated. Common differential diagnostic problems and their solutions take precedence, but all of the known benign and malignant lesions of serosal membranes are covered, with copious illustrations and the latest available references. Epidemiologic, pathogenetic, clinical, radiographic and gross pathologic features are integrated with the discussions of these entities. This will be the most complete source available on this topic for years to come.

In Eastern Europe, the two Balkan Wars of 1912/13 had greater importance than the First World War for the construction of nations and states. This volume shows how these “short” wars profoundly changed the sociopolitical situation in the Balkans, with consequences that are still felt today. More than one hundred years later, the successors of the belligerent states in Southeastern Europe memorialize the wars as heroic highlights of their respective pasts. Furthermore, the metaphor that the Balkans were Europe’s “powder keg”, perpetuated at the beginning of the twentieth century in the face of these wars, was reactivated in both the West and the East up through the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The authors entangle the hitherto exclusive national master narratives and analyse them cogently and trenchantly for an international readership. They make an indispensable contribution to the proper integration of the Balkan Wars into the European historical memory of twentieth-century warfare.
