Download or read book The Freckleton England Air Disaster written by James R. Hedtke and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freckleton catastrophe of August 23, 1944, occurred when an American B-24 Liberator crashed into the small village of Freckleton in northwest England. The plane was on a test flight when it encountered a rare and severe summer thunderstorm. Air traffic control at the American air base Warton recalled the bomber back to the base. When the pilot attempted to abort the landing because of poor visibility and high winds, a downdraft caught the plane and it crashed into the adjacent village of Freckleton. As the B-24 tumbled through the village, destroying three houses and a snack bar, flames erupted from wreckage and engulfed Holy Trinity grade school. Before the fire could be brought under control, the holocaust destroyed an entire generation of children in this village of fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. The village would never be the same. In a compelling account of sorrow, loss, hope and finally rebirth, the book looks at the history of the village, the establishment of the base at Warton, the crash, the funeral of the 61 victims, the official British inquest and the American investigation into the cause of the crash. The lives of the survivors, the servicemen and the villagers are followed through 2012.

Book excerpt: History is everywhere in Freckleton - it can be seen in the very physical and social fabric of this village near Preston, Lancashire. The shape of the fields, the street plan, the houses and buildings are all evidence in one way or another of hundreds of years of human endeavour, character and tragedy. The village is known for many things: its grazing marshes, its boat-yard and the bleak beauty of the Naze; but above all for its very strong sense of community, witnessed by the range and number of church and social organizations flourishing in the area.

Download or read book Great British Weather Disasters written by Philip Eden and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a popular book with big set-piece descriptions accompanied by illustrations at its core, but with enough science to attract both the specialist reader and to educate the lay reader without scaring them off. Disaster books traditionally feed on hype, sensationalism and bad science. Eden redresses the balance. What then is the place of weather disasters in our climate? Are they freaks or a necessary part of the whole? How rare are meteorological event does it take to cause chaos in our day-to-day lives? Are we becoming more at risk and less capable of dealing with them? Or do we just complain more? These days we try and mitigate the effects of different hazards, by acquiring personal and property protection - individually, personally and politically. So what is the role of local and central government, the insurance industry, the media and the public? And how do we actually measure disaster? By rarity, insurance cost, death toll, recovery times or what? Can we merge all these so we can compare -say- the 1976 drought with the 1891 blizzard? Can we rank disasters? 15,000 died in the European heatwave of August 2003. Is this the shape of things to come? What will happen if the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift stops flowing? Here are just a few of Philip Eden's topics in a book which will be riveting to readers.

Download or read book Hakoah Heroes written by David Goldberg and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written as an eternal tribute to a very humble Jewish Australian named Kurt Defris. The Young Kurt Defris was a dashing winger in the Austrian First Division Football League. In 1931 Kurt was transferred for a large fee from his club Fair Unitas to the famous Hakoah-Vienna. Kurt Defris, like so many persecuted Jews, fled Austria before annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany on 12 March 1938. In 1946 Kurt Defris came to Australia and remained in the Great Southern Land for the rest of his life. Within weeks of his arrival this truly great man brought a dream into a reality, a reality that ultimately gave tens of thousands of Jewish immigrants in a new land, hope, safety among their own, and finally great pride in something, that, by its very nature brought together multitudes of people from all races and all creeds into perfect harmony.
