Book French Music Since Berlioz

Download or read book French Music Since Berlioz written by Caroline Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Music Since Berlioz explores key developments in French classical music during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This volume draws on the expertise of a range of French music scholars who provide their own perspectives on particular aspects of the subject. D dre Donnellon's introduction discusses important issues and debates in French classical music of the period, highlights key figures and institutions, and provides a context for the chapters that follow. The first two of these are concerned with opera in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries respectively, addressed by Thomas Cooper for the nineteenth century and Richard Langham Smith for the twentieth. Timothy Jones's chapter follows, which assesses the French contribution to those most Germanic of genres, nineteenth-century chamber music and symphonies. The quintessentially French tradition of the nineteenth-century salon is the subject of James Ross's chapter, while the more sacred setting of Paris's most musically significant churches and the contribution of their organists is the focus of Nigel Simeone's essay. The transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century is explored by Roy Howat through a detailed look at four leading figures of this time: Faur Chabrier, Debussy and Ravel. Robert Orledge follows with a later group of composers, Satie & Les Six, and examines the role of the media in promoting French music. The 1930s, and in particular the composers associated with Jeune France, are discussed by Deborah Mawer, while Caroline Potter investigates Parisian musical life during the Second World War. The book closes with two chapters that bring us to the present day. Peter O'Hagan surveys the enormous contribution to French music of Pierre Boulez, and Caroline Potter examines trends since 1945. Aimed at teachers and students of French music history, as well as performers and the inquisitive concert- and opera-goer, French Music Since Berlioz is an essential companion for an

Book From the Royal to the Republican Body

Download or read book From the Royal to the Republican Body written by Sara E. Melzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, leading scholars examine the role of the body as a primary site of political signification in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France. Some essays focus on the sacralization of the king's body through a gendered textual and visual rhetoric. Others show how the monarchy mastered subjects' minds by disciplining the body through dance, music, drama, art, and social rituals. The last essays in the volume focus on the unmaking of the king's body and the substitution of a new, republican body. Throughout, the authors explore how race and gender shaped the body politic under the Bourbons and during the Revolution. This compelling study expands our conception of state power and demonstrates that seemingly apolitical activities like the performing arts, dress and ritual, contribute to the state's hegemony. From the Royal to the Republican Body will be an essential resource for students and scholars of history, literature, music, dance and performance studies, gender studies, art history, and political theory.

Book Abridged Handbook of Grenadian Creole English and French Names

Download or read book Abridged Handbook of Grenadian Creole English and French Names written by Thomas R. Chase and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook includes elements of Grenadian folklore, proverbs, and sayings. Much more work needs to be done in those areas. In fact, the proverbs and sayings are already the object of a separate publication that is well underway. A special section on French names and their meanings has also been included for primary school pupils and teachers, as well as foreigners to our shores. It deals with the names of places, people, patois nicknames, and French-sounding names. Keywords, key expressions, or entries in the lexeme section and in other sections of the book are in bold type. Some of these terms may also be noted by an asterisk. The part of speech of the terms is noted, their pronunciation where deemed necessary for this particular publication, the origin of the term, and their meaning in SE/GCE. As a general rule, the most popular meanings of terms are in descending order of importance. The cultural and folkloric values of certain entries are noted in an effort to document such information and/or beliefs. Synonyms, antonyms, and cross references are given due prominence to show the richness of the language. Omitted from this work are terms considered to be too vulgar in nature, particularly the wealth of those referring to human sexual organs and expletives. A comparative grammar section juxtaposes grammatical similarities and differences between SE and GCE. It is a scratching of the surface and is intended to show, first of all, that GCE has a grammar of its own, where traditionally certain linguistic performances were and may still be seen or written off as errors. In fact, they may be standard grammatical features of GCE and Creole English. This section explores as well the nature and origin of some of the syntactic structures used by Grenadians with a view to facilitate the transition from SE to GCE, or vice versa.

Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 2218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane.

Download or read book The Saint Napoleon written by Sudhir Hazareesingh and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1852, President Louis Napoleon of France declared that August 15--Napoleon Bonaparte's birthday--would be celebrated as France's national day. Leading up to the creation of the Second Empire, this was the first in a series of attempts to "Bonapartize" his regime and strengthen its popular legitimacy. Across France, public institutions sought to draw local citizens together to celebrate civic ideals of unity, order, and patriotism. But the new sense of French togetherness was fraught with tensions. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence, Sudhir Hazareesingh vividly reconstructs the symbolic richness and political complexity of the Saint-Napoleon festivities in a work that opens up broader questions about the nature of the French state, unity and lines of fracture in society, changing boundaries between public and private spheres, and the role of myth and memory in constructing nationhood. The state's Bonapartist identity was at times vigorously contested by local social, political, and religious groups. In various regions, people used the national day to celebrate their own communities and to honor their hometown veterans; but elsewhere, the revival of republican sentiment clashed sharply with imperial attitudes. Sophisticated and gracefully written, this book offers rich insights into modern French history and culture.
