Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only artifact from my family's world before the onset of World War II is a pair of "raveled, stained, scored, and torn" napkins. These frayed "white napkins with blue borders" were "given to my mother by her mother on the platform of a train station in 1939." My parents traveled from that platform in Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki, Poland, to Bialystok to Siberia to Uzbekistan, saving their lives and losing everything else. Sally and Morris Michlewitz grew up in the newly independent Poland during the interwar period. They experienced the building of a newly defined nation. They witnessed the destruction and conquest of that nation in September 1939. Sally survived the Blitz in Warsaw. Morris, as a Polish infantryman, survived the failed defense of the city. During the next decade, they saw the world falling apart in small and large ways. The narrative ends in Brooklyn, New York in 1975. Frayed Lives paints the panorama of a family record which stretches across thousands of miles. It retells family history and connects it to the stories of other people surviving those times and places. It frames these stories with the history of record presented by scholars. It carefully depicts the desperation of refugees of war.

  • Pages : 105 pages

Download or read book Frayed Light written by Yonatan Berg and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This poetic collection is an honest and deeply reflective look at life overshadowed by disputed settlements and political upheaval in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yonatan Berg is a poet from Israel and the youngest person ever awarded the Yehuda Amichai Poetry Prize. This collection brings together the best poems from his three published collections in Hebrew, deftly translated by Joanna Chen. His poetry recounts his upbringing on an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, and service in a combat unit of the Israeli military, which left him with post-traumatic stress disorder. He grapples with questions of religion and tradition, nationalism, war, and familial relationships. The book also explores his conceptual relationship with Biblical, historical, and literary characters from the history of civilization, set against a backdrop of the Mediterranean landscape. Berg shares an insider's perspective on life in Israel today. [Sample Text] Unity We travel the silk road of evening, tobacco and desire flickering between our hands. We are warm travelers, our eyes unfurled, traveling in psalms, in Rumi, in the sayings of the man from the Galilee. We break bread under the pistachio tree, under the Banyan tree, under the dark of the Samaritan fig tree. Songs of offering rise up in our throats, wandering along the wall of night. We travel in the openness of warm eternity. Heavenly voices announce a coupling as the quiet horse gallops heavenward. We travel with the rest of the world, with its atrocities, its piles of ruins, scars of barbed wire, traveling with ardor in our loins, with the cry of birth. We sit crossed-legged within the rocking of flesh, the quiet of the Brahmin, the bells of Mass, the tumult of Torah. We travel through eagles of death, dilution of earth in rivers, in eulogies, through marble, we travel through the silk of evening, our hearts like bonfires in the dark.

Book The Life and Writing of Fray Ang lico Ch vez

Download or read book The Life and Writing of Fray Ang lico Ch vez written by Ellen McCracken and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2010-01-16 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Southwest Book Award from the Border Regional Library Association As a teenager, Manuel Chávez (1910-1996) left his native New Mexico for over a decade of study at the St. Francis Seraphic Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, and other midwestern institutions. Included in his curriculum was an introduction to literature and the arts that piqued an interest that would follow him the remainder of his life. Upon returning to New Mexico, he was ordained Fray Angélico Chávez and would become one of New Mexico's most important twentieth-century writers. In The Life and Writing of Fray Angélico Chávez, Ellen McCracken provides a literary biography that includes a deep look into the intellectual and cultural contributions of this Renaissance man. McCracken moves chronologically through a substantial body of work that includes fiction, poetry, plays, essays, spiritual tracts, sermons, historical writing, translation, painting, church renovation, and journalism. From the prolific creativity of the years of his first assignment in Peña Blanca to the decades he spent researching Hispano genealogy in New Mexico, McCracken traces Chávez's complex and changing identity as an ethnic American and religious subject who was also an historian, artist, creative writer, and preservationist. The year 2010 will mark the centenary of Fray Angélico Chávez's birth, and this volume will serve as a fitting tribute.

Book excerpt: A stellar host of writers explore the cornerstone of fiction writing: character The Book of Other People is about character. Twenty-five or so outstanding writers have been asked by Zadie Smith to make up a fictional character. By any measure, creating character is at the heart of the fictional enterprise, and this book concentrates on writers who share a talent for making something recognizably human out of words (and, in the case of the graphic novelists, pictures). But the purpose of the book is variety: straight "realism"-if such a thing exists-is not the point. There are as many ways to create character as there are writers, and this anthology features a rich assortment of exceptional examples. The writers featured in The Book of Other People include: Aleksandar Hemon Nick Hornby Hari Kunzru Toby Litt David Mitchell George Saunders Colm Tóibín Chris Ware, and more Read Zadie Smith’s newest novel, Swing Time.

Book Exponential Inequalities

  • Author : Shreya Atrey
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2022-12-20
  • ISBN : 0192873016

Download or read book Exponential Inequalities written by Shreya Atrey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtfully edited volume explores the operation of equality and discrimination law in times of crisis. It aims to understand how existing inequalities are exacerbated in crises and whether equality law has the tools to understand and address this contingency. Experience during the COVID-19 crisis shows that the pandemic has acted as a catalyst for 'exponential inequalities' related to racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and ableism. Yet, the field of equality law (which is meant to be addressing such discrimination or inequality) has had little immediate relevance in mitigating these exponential inequalities. This is despite the fact that countries like the UK have a rather recent and state-of-the-art legislation in the field, namely the Equality Act 2010. Exponential Inequalities offers readers an understanding of how these inequalities came to be and how crises such as the global pandemic, the climate emergency, or the economic downturn, can exacerbate an already untenable situation. It illuminates both the structural and the conceptual, as well as the practical and doctrinal difficulties currently experienced in equality law, and discusses whether or not equality law even has the tools to both understand and then address this contingency. Written by a team of internationally recognized experts, Exponential Inequalities provides a comparative perspective on the functioning of equality laws across a range of contexts and jurisdictions and represents an essential read for scholars and policy makers alike.

Book Above the Fray

Download or read book Above the Fray written by Owen Thomas Ashton, MD and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is an ever changing and often unpredictable sequence of events that rarely fulfills our expectations or desires. And yet in the long run, if we can be objective in our assessment, we find that unpredictable and challenging events invariably contribute to our growth and maturity. Could it be that adversity is a message and a gift from Infinite Wisdom? Is it possible to perceive perfection in all things simply by changing our point of view? Is there some body of secret knowledge that when applied can allow us to find meaning and clarity in all events? Yes, yes, and triple yes. By increasing our level of awareness, we can render all concerns, obstacles, misfortunes, and mistakes as utterly irrelevant. This is a powerful statement that may take some radical examination of our present approach to life on planet earth, but perhaps up until the present moment, we have missed something that in retrospect would seem very obvious. It would be very beneficial if we could accept as perfect even the harshest of lifes difficulties. Oh, looking back over the past ten years of ones life experience, one might finally admit that the lesson learned was necessary and even desired; however it required too many years of suffering to finally reach such a conclusion. Increasing ones level of awareness, and applying concepts that have been taught throughout the ages, coupled with a sprinkling of new scientific breakthroughs, potentially could lessen or even eliminate this suffering. The illusions of insanity that seemingly permeate our lives will become important tools in the ascent of our journey into Awareness.

Book The Frayed Atlantic Edge

Download or read book The Frayed Atlantic Edge written by David Gange and published by William Collins. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one brilliant adventure over the course of a year, leading historian and nature writer David Gange kayaked the coasts of Atlantic Britain and Ireland from north to south: every cove, sound, inlet, island. Paddling alone in sun and storms, among whales and seabirds, Gange travelled slowly and close to the water as millions did when coasts were the main arteries of trade and communication. He was in search of island archives and the vast poetic literatures of coastal towns, of neglected social histories that unlock our understanding of this archipelago's past and future. In captivating prose and loving detail, this is a history of Britain and Ireland like not other.
