Beginning with a historical analysis, Fratricide in Battle examines all aspects of the problem, covering both human and technical factors, before looking at a range of measures currently in use to tackle the issue. Charles Kirke brings together an international group of experts in the field, from both military and academic backgrounds, to provide a thorough examination of this crucial subject. Taken together, their contributions offer a comprehensive understanding of fratricide in its historical context and suggest important lessons for future generations.

Book The Human Factors of Fratricide

Download or read book The Human Factors of Fratricide written by Laura A. Rafferty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fratricide has been defined as firing on your own forces, when mistaking them for enemy forces, which results in injury or death. Rates of fratricide incidence have been steadily increasing and the complexity of the contemporary operating environment may lead to a continuation of this trend. Although the majority of research into fratricide has focused on the development of technological decision aids, recent explorations highlight the need to emphasise the social aspects within a socio-technical framework. This book presents and validates, via the use of case studies, a model of teamwork and decision-making factors that are associated with incidents of fratricide. In summary, it offers a review and evaluation of contemporary theoretical perspectives on teamwork and fratricide, as well as a range of accident analysis approaches. A novel theory of fratricide is then presented followed by a new methodology for assessing fratricide. Naturalistic case studies of teams are undertaken in the military domain. These studies illustrate the approach and offer early validation evidence. In closing, the book presents a series of principles designed to reduce the likelihood of fratricide in the future.

Book Fratricide Technology and Joint Doctrine

Download or read book Fratricide Technology and Joint Doctrine written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fratricide is not a new phenomenon in warfare; it is an unfortunate and tragic occurrence for which the armed forces continue to seek a solution. From World War I through the Vietnam War, what has been generally accepted by many scholars and historians is that two percent of all combat casualties resulted from fratricide. Recent combat operations by U.S. forces such as Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom have had fratricide rates that are considerably higher than those recorded in earlier conflicts. This is despite the fact that there have been significant technological advances in hardware and weapons systems since World War II. The Department of Defense has spent countless dollars on technology in an effort to develop a system that will eliminate or significantly reduce fratricide, but technology alone is not the answer. Doctrine or the basic fundamentals of how U.S. forces are employed in combat is a critical component in reducing fratricide. More specifically, Joint Doctrine is how U.S. forces will conduct operations to accomplish their mission objectives. Current Joint doctrine does not specifically address fratricide prevention at a level or degree that provides operators with useable tools to ensure that fratricide prevention occurs at all levels of warfare. Using the principles of Operational Risk Management and incorporating them with methods within Joint doctrine the U.S. military can improve the tools and products available to operators. U.S. military doctrine must be continually evaluated and allowed to evolve if it is to be relevant in today's fast-paced combat environment. The best way to reduce fratricide is through the synergistic effects of technology and doctrine. (22 refs.).

Book Applying the National Training Center Experience

Download or read book Applying the National Training Center Experience written by Martin Goldsmith and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Note uses data from the National Training Center instrumentation and observer systems to measure the frequency of fratricidal ground-to-ground engagements, to make some estimate of their importance to battle outcome, and to gain insights into the cases. Because the available data do not include infantry weapons, this study covers only vehicle system engagements and simulated artillery engagements. The study found that 1 to 3 percent of Blue vehicle kills were fratricidal, most fratricides were isolated, and multiple fratricides occurred mostly at night. For indirect fire, an average of 26.7 artillery missions were fired per battle. Of these, 3.1 percent resulted in fratricide, while 33 percent struck the enemy."--Rand abstracts

This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the significance of friendly fire in U.S. naval surface and submarine operations during World War II and argues that the occurrence of self-inflicted casualties is a function of the frequency and intensity of naval combat. Additionally, the causes and factors contributing to naval fratricide are identified and discussed to naval fratricide are identified and discussed using historical cases. The crucial result of this thesis is that even the most technologically advanced and highly trained force is subject to surprisingly high rates of friendly fire.

Book Fratricide and the Operational Commander An Appraisal of Losses to Friendly Fire

Download or read book Fratricide and the Operational Commander An Appraisal of Losses to Friendly Fire written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fog of war may very well establish the conditions for losses due to friendly fire. Whatever the cause, incidents of this type pose a significant challenge for the operational commander in terms of his ability to conduct continuous operations on today's battlefield. Research has shown that some weapon systems rely on human judgment under conditions and distances where such judgment is degraded or even faulty. The gap between technology and human capability is approaching a level where human beings may not be able to employ these systems without significant risk to one's own forces. This limitation does not absolve leaders of the responsibility to incorporate methods to reduce the risk of losses from fratricide. Fratricide is a joint issue that must be addressed in a multi-service manner. Commanders and staff officers alike must understand the problem and be familiar with steps to limit its awful cost.

Book excerpt: Commanders who lead their troops in combat realize that they may suffer casualties in the process. This is an inevitable by-product of war and is taken for granted. However, they do not take for granted that a portion of their casualties will be inflicted by their own forces. Yet, in each of America's wars from World War I through Operation Desert Storm, a significant number of U.S. personnel have been killed and wounded as a direct result of friendly fire/fratricide. A brief review of some of these documented fratricide incidents and associated causes is provided. With the observation that technological advances to prevent fratricide has not kept pace with today's sophisticated modern weapon systems, current anti-fratricide methods and future materiel solutions are detailed in this paper.

Book Fratricide The Ultimate Cost of Joint Interoperability Failure

Download or read book Fratricide The Ultimate Cost of Joint Interoperability Failure written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elimination of fratricide in war is arguably an impossible task, but the Services have yet to support a true "joint" approach to alleviating friendly fire casualties. Currently, there is no universal system for either target identification or identification of friendly forces. The problem is largely due to insufficient training, inadequate integration of Service systems, and outdated tactics and doctrine. "The problem (is one) that falls between the services, in this case, primarily Army ground troops and Air Force and Navy fliers, and therefore a matter that is not the immediate responsibility and priority of any single service bureaucracy" (Wood: 18). In the absence of a strong proponent for fratricide prevention, each Service expects the others to take the lead in resolving acknowledged shortfalls in adapting training, doctrine, and acquisition strategy to protect ground forces from friendly fire. Only a true "joint" approach to the problem can overcome Service reluctance to change. To initiate close air support (CAS) interoperability reform in an age of increasingly high-technology weaponry, the military must establish a single entity as the principal agent for fratricide prevention. The Secretary of Defense should charge U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) with the responsibility to refine joint CAS doctrine, improve joint CAS training, and develop a common positional picture to reduce fratricide.
