Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) was started in 1933 as one of the New Deal make-work programs, to employ jobless architects, draftspeople, and photographers. Its purpose is to document the nation's architectural heritage, especially those buildings that are in danger of ruin or deliberate destruction. Today, the HABS is part of the National Park Service and its repository is in the Library of Congress, much of which is available online at loc.gov.Of the tens of thousands HABS buildings, I found 44 Frank Lloyd Wright designs that have been digitized. Each HABS survey includes photographs and/or drawings and/or a report. I've included here what the Library of Congress had-sometimes all three, sometimes two of the three, and sometimes just one. There might be a single photo or drawing, or, such as in the case of Florida Southern College (in volume two), over a hundred. While all of the documents in this book are on the Library of Congress website, they're inconvenient to access. It's time consuming to download the drawings as PDFs, which is what you have to do if you want to see their detail. The reports are separate PDFs, too. But I've done all that for you here, and even turned the drawings on their side so that they fill the page. The photographic reproduction isn't as good as it would be with a more expensive production process, but then each volume would cost at least twice what it does.None of the text in this book other than this introduction is from me. The photo captions are verbatim from the Library of Congress, and all of the documents are shown without alteration, except that I adjusted the brightness and contrast of a few of the photos and converted the few color photos to B&W. No photos were cropped or straightened, and I've retained the negative edges. A few reports that have only one page that says "Photographs" or "Drawings" have been left out, as they contain no useful information.CONTENTS OF VOLUME 1 (this volume)American System-Built HomesAuldbrassEmil Bach HouseBarnsdall ParkBarnsdall Park - Hollyhock HouseBarnsdall Park - Residence ABeth Sholom SynagogueF. Download or read book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey written by John Linley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the elegant townhouses of Savannah to the towering hotel and office complexes of Atlanta, the state of Georgia has a distinguished architectural tradition. No other work documents this rich heritage as comprehensively as The Georgia Catalog. Prepared under the auspices of the Historic American Buildings Survey, this carefully researched and beautifully illustrated volume will be an invaluable resource for architects, preservationists, historians, and those who own the historic houses or who simply are interested in Georgia’s architectural legacy. The book is in two parts. The first is a history of and guide to the architecture of the state. John Linley begins his survey with the remains of prehistoric civilization and the architecture of the first European settlers. He traces the development of a native architecture in the state, the flowering of the Greek Revival style, the functional architecture of commerce and industry, and the energy and imagination of urban architecture in the late twentieth century. The text reflects the author’s interest in the rationale and logic that produced the architecture and in the lessons that the past has for the present and the future. He also emphasizes the influence of climate, ecology, landscape, and city planning on both historic and contemporary architecture. The second section of The Georgia Catalog is a complete, updated listing of nearly four hundred sites in the Historic American Buildings Survey. Each entry gives the precise location of the site; a brief description of the structure; the date of construction and the name of the architect, if known; changes in name structure, or location of the building; its present condition; any facts of historical significance; and the number and dates of drawings, photographs, and data sheets in the HABS collection at the Library of Congress. To add to its value as a guide, the volume also includes a glossary of architectural terms and a list of Georgia properties that are included in the National Register of Historic Places, have been designated National Landmarks, or are part of the Historic American Engineering Record.

Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright written by Barry Bergdoll and published by Moma. This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalogue reveals new perspectives on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, a designer so prolific and familiar as to nearly preclude critical reexamination. Structured as a series of inquiries into the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, the book is a collection of scholarly explorations rather than an attempt to construct a master narrative. Each chapter centers on a key object from the archive that an invited author has "unpacked"-interpreting and contextualizing it, tracing its meanings and connections, and juxtaposing it with other works from the archive, from MoMA, or from outside collections. The publication aims to open up Wright's work to questions, interrogations, and debates, and to highlight interpretations by contemporary scholars, both established Wright experts and others considering this iconic figure from new and illuminating perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly illustrated classic study traces the history of the world-famous Chicago school of architecture from its beginnings with the functional innovations of William Le Baron Jenney and others to their imaginative development by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Chicago School of Architecture places the Chicago school in its historical setting, showing it at once to be the culmination of an iron and concrete construction and the chief pioneer in the evolution of modern architecture. It also assesses the achievements of the school in terms of the economic, social, and cultural growth of Chicago at the turn of the century, and it shows the ultimate meaning of the Chicago work for contemporary architecture. "A major contribution [by] one of the world's master-historians of building technique."—Reyner Banham, Arts Magazine "A rich, organized record of the distinguished architecture with which Chicago lives and influences the world."—Ruth Moore, Chicago Sun-Times

Download or read book Wright and New York written by Anthony Alofsin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “immensely valuable” dual biography of the iconic American architect and the city that transformed his career in the early twentieth century (Francis Morrone, New Criterion). Frank Lloyd Wright took his first major trip to New York in 1909, fleeing a failed marriage and artistic stagnation. He returned a decade later, his personal life and architectural career again in crisis. Booming 1920s New York served as a refuge, but it also challenged him and resurrected his career. The city connected Wright with important clients and commissions that would harness his creative energy and define his role in modern architecture, even as the stock market crash took its toll on his benefactors. Anthony Alofsin has broken new ground by mining the Wright archives held by Columbia University and the Museum of Modern Art. His foundational research provides a crucial and innovative understanding of Wright’s life, his career, and the conditions that enabled his success. The result is at once a stunning biography and a glittering portrait of early twentieth-century Manhattan.
