Book Napoleon s Troublesome Americans

Download or read book Napoleon s Troublesome Americans written by Peter P. Hill and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before the United States declared war on Great Britain in June 1812, Congress came within two votes of declaring war on Napoleon Bonaparte's French empire. For six years, France and Britain had both seized American shipping. While common wisdom says that America was virtually an innocent in this matter, caught in the middle of the epic wars between France and Britain, Peter Hill has uncovered a far more complex and interesting history. French privateers and Napoleon's navy were seizing American merchant ships in a concerted attempt to disrupt Britain's commerce. American ships were the principal carriers of British goods to the continent, and Napoleon believed his best, and perhaps only, hope to defeat Britain was to cut off that market. While the French emperor sought an accommodation with America, the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison continually frustrated him. American diplomatic fumbling sent mixed messages, and American neutrality policies, Hill finds, were more punishing to France than to Britain. Always interested in lucrative ventures, American merchant ships also became the main suppliers of food to British forces fighting Napoleon in Spain and Portugal. By 1812, the United States was on a collision course with both Britain and France over clashes on the high seas, and war with two major powers at once might have proven disastrous for the young United States. Hill's engaging narrative details the fascinating history of America's troubled relationship with Napoleon and how this crisis with France was finally averted.

Book American Foreign Relations Since 1600

Download or read book American Foreign Relations Since 1600 written by Robert L. Beisner and published by Abc-clio. This book was released on 2003 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough update of the standard bibliography of American foreign relations literature from colonial times to the present day. America has formed alliances, exchanged diplomats, traded goods and services, and fought wars with nations on every continent but Antarctica. And people have written books, articles, reports, and papers by the thousands on these subjects. In American Foreign Relations since 1600, the 2002 president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, Robert Beisner, has worked with members of SHAFR to compile the most exhaustive survey of writing on American foreign relations ever published. Covering 400 years of American history, his team of editors--all top experts in the field--have referenced and annotated nearly 20,000 published and nonpublished works. It's all here, from the Mayflower Compact to the My Lai massacre, from the War of 1812 to the war on terrorism, from the pre-Revolutionary era to the post-Cold War world. - Nearly 20,000 fully annotated bibliographical entries on topics such as the Mexican Revolution, pan-Americanism, wartime diplomacy, the German threat, and more - A preface clearly outlining the updated features of the book - Three analytical indexes to guide users to entry information, contributors, and significant individuals - Biographical studies on individuals such as John Barrett, William Jennings Bryan, and Theodore Roosevelt

Book The Presidency of John Quincy Adams

Download or read book The Presidency of John Quincy Adams written by Mary W. M. Hargreaves and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have not been generous in judging the presidency of John Quincy Adams. Those who have most conspicuously upheld Adams's fame have, at the same time, virtually ignored his service in the White House. Critics, on the other hand, have described his administration as a failure, founded upon "bargain and corruption" and marked by exclusion of the United States from the British West Indian trade, the ineffectiveness of its efforts to promote strong Pan-American relationships, and the enactment of the "tariff of abominations." Some analysts have even argued that it generated the sectionalism which terminated the "Era of Good Feelings." Mary Hargreaves contends, instead, that the basic effort of Adams's presidency was to harmonize divergent sectional interests. To ignore the Adams administration's commitment to nationalism, she argues, is to overlook a fundamental stage in the establishment of the federal government as guardian of the general interest. The volume contains new information on the development of United States commercial policy, the nation's early relationships with Latin America, and difficulties of local and regional adjustment to the growth of the national economy. It will be of keen interest to all students of the economic and political history of the early national period.

Book The Papers of Henry Clay

Download or read book The Papers of Henry Clay written by Henry Clay and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supplement to The Papers of Henry Clay contains documents discovered too late to be included in the proper chronological sequence in earlier volumes. Spanning the years from 1793 to 1852, the items shed important light on Clay's early years in Kentucky, his legal career, and his work for the Bank of the United States. Material dealing with the "Corrupt Bargain" charge is particularly rich, and many of the letters that appear in this volume fill gaps in exchanges already published. Clay's correspondence with Benjamin Watkins Lee of Virginia and Mary Bayard, wife of Delaware senator Richard Henry Bayard, is especially interesting. An essay on Clay portraits by Clifford Amyx, professor emeritus of art at the University of Kentucky, provides a detailed discussion of the paintings, statues, busts, engravings, and daguerreotypes that featured Clay as the subject. Appended to the essay is a calendar listing each major work, the artist, date of completion, and present location. A comprehensive bibliography of works cited in the entire series will benefit researchers seeking information in addition to that provided in the annotations. This supplement is an essential addition to the earlier volumes in the series.
