Book Franciscus Junius F F and His Circle

Download or read book Franciscus Junius F F and His Circle written by Rolf Hendrik Bremmer and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many fine scholars who made and have maintained the high reputation of the Dutch Republic in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Franciscus Junius the Younger (1591-1677) is one who has not yet been given the attention he deserves. Born and brought up among the élite Calvinist scholars of Leiden University, he began his career as a theologian. As a consequence of the religious quarrels between the Arminians and Gomarists, he resigned from his office, and went to England where in 1620 he was attached as a tutor and librarian to the household of the Earl of Arundel, an assiduous art-collector. His work as Arundel's librarian resulted in the publication in 1637 of De pictura veterum, a penetrating analysis of the Classical arts. This book laid the foundation of modern art-history. Later in his life Junius devoted most of his time and energy to the study of the Old Germanic languages, culminating in 1665 in the publication of the first edition of the Gothic Bible, together with a Gothic dictionary. The present volume contains contributions on many aspects of Junius's life, his work as an art-historian, as a Neo-Latin author, his studies of Philip Sydney and Edmund Spencer, and of his Germanic philology. A check-list of his correspondence completes the volume. Contributors include C.S.M. Rademaker, Philipp Fehl, Colette Nativel, Judith Dundas, Chris H. Heesakkers, Ph.H. Breuker, Peter J. Lucas, E.G. Stanley and Rolf H. Bremmer Jr., and Sophie van Romburgh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition includes the complete correspondence of Francis Junius (1591–1677), who may be called the father of modern art theory and of comparative Germanic philology. The edition offers insight into this Dutch scholar’s life and studies in the context of his family, friends, and employment by the English Arundel family. All were intimately associated with the leading circles of scholars, aristocrats and dignitaries in the Low Countries and England. The corpus of 226 Latin, English and Dutch letters has been edited with generous annotations, English translations, an introduction, and a critical apparatus. The letters are an invaluable source of detail for students of seventeenth-century intellectual history, English and Dutch elite culture, Germanic philology, art history, and learned networks.

Book Medievalism and the Academy

Download or read book Medievalism and the Academy written by Leslie J. Workman and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of a two-volume examination of medievalism and academic scholarship, this collection is divided into four sections: Canonizing Chaucer, Antiquarian loomings, Medievalism, medieval studies, and Medieval studies at the millennium. Medievalism, the "continuing process of creating the middle ages", engenders formal medieval studies from a wide variety of popular interests in the middle ages. This volume accordingly explores the common ground between artisticand popular constructions of the middle ages and the study of the middle ages within the academy. Essays treat the genesis of medieval studies in early modern antiquarianism; the erection of academic medievalism through persistent, indeed perverse, appeals to heroic medieval manliness and attenuated female spirituality; the current jeopardy of the book (a medieval invention) in the face of technological assau Contributors: DAVID O. Book Chaucer in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Chaucer in the Eighteenth Century written by David Hopkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a study of how the poetry of Chaucer continued to give pleasure in the eighteenth century despite the immense linguistic, literary, and cultural shifts that had occurred in the intervening centuries. It explores translations and imitations of Chaucer's work by Dryden, Pope, and other poets (including Samuel Cobb, John Dart, Christopher Smart, Jane Brereton, William Wordsworth, and Leigh Hunt) from the early eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, as well as investigating the beginnings of modern Chaucer editing and biography. It pays particular attention to critical responses to Chaucer by Dryden and the brothers Warton, and includes a chapter on the oblique presence of Chaucer in Samuel Johnson's Dictionary. It explores the ways in which Chaucer's poetry (including several works now known not to be by him) was described, refashioned, reimagined, and understood several centuries after its initial appearance. It also documents the way that views of Chaucer's own character were inferred from his work. The book combines detailed discussion of particular critical and poetic texts, many of them unfamiliar to modern readers, with larger suggestions about the ways in which poetry of the past is received in the future.
