Book Francis Bacon Poet Prophet Philosopher

Download or read book Francis Bacon Poet Prophet Philosopher written by W. F. C. Wigston and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The great interest that Bacon took in portraits of character is proved by the fact that he attempted to draw them himself. With a few felicitous touches be sketched the characters of Julius and Augustus Caesar, and his view of both was similar to that of Shakespeare. In Julius Caesar he saw combined all that the Roman genius had to bestow in the shape of greatness, nobility, culture, and fascination, and regarded his character as the most formidable that the Roman world could encounter. And giving what always serves as the proof of the calculation in the analysis of a character, Bacon so explains the character of Caesar, as to explain his fate also. He saw, like Shakespeare, that Caesar was naturally inclined to a despotic feeling that governed his great qualities and also their aberrations rendering him dangerous to the Republic and blind with respect to his enemies. He wished, says Bacon, not to be eminent amongst great and deserving men, but to be chief among inferiors and vassals. He was so much dazzled by his own greatness that he no longer knew what danger was.' This is the same Caesar into whose mouth Shakespeare puts the words: 'Danger knows full well That Caesar is more dangerous than he. We were two lions littered in one day, And I the elder and more terrible' ( 'Julius Caesar', act ii. sc. 2.) When Bacon, at last, attributes the fate of Caesar to his forgiveness of enemies, that by this magnanimity he might impose upon the multitude, he still shows the dazzled man, who heightens the expression of his greatness at the expense of his security."

Book Cosmic Consciousness

Download or read book Cosmic Consciousness written by Richard Maurice Bucke and published by . This book was released on 1923 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the magnum opus of Bucke's career, a project that he researched and wrote over many years. In it, Bucke described his own experience, that of contemporaries (most notably Whitman, but also unknown figures like "C.P."), and the experiences and outlook of historical figures including Buddha, Jesus, Paul, Plotinus, Muhammad, Dante, Francis Bacon, and William Blake. Bucke developed a theory involving three stages in the development of consciousness: the simple consciousness of animals; the self-consciousness of the mass of humanity (encompassing reason, imagination, etc.); and cosmic consciousness - an emerging faculty and the next stage of human development. Among the effects of this progression, he believed he detected a lengthy historical trend in which religious conceptions and theologies had become less and less fearful. A classic work.

Book excerpt: “The Brotherhood of the Rosy Cross - A History of the Rosicrucians” is Arthur Edward Waite's study of the elusive Rosicrucians, a secret society which the first appeared to the public in Germany in the early 17th century. Arthur Edward Waite (1857 – 1942), more commonly referred to as A. E. Waite, was an American-born British mystic and poet. He wrote profusely on the subject of the occult and esoteric matters, and is famous for being the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. His work arguably constitutes the first attempt to systematically studying the history of western occultism, which he viewed more of a spiritual tradition than proto-science or pseudo-religion, as was the more common conception. Contents include: “Mythical Rosicrucian Precursors”, “Militia Crucifera Evangelica”, “Alchemists And Mystics Symbolism”, “Of The Rose And Cross”, “Fama Fraternitatis R C”, “Confessio Fraternitatis R C”, “The Chemical Nuptials”, “Authorship Of The Chemical Nuptials”, “Development Of Rosicrucian Literature”, etc. Other works by this author include: “The Alchemical Writings of Edward Kelly” (1893), “Turba Philsophorum” (1894), and “Devil-Worship in France” (1896). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.
