Download or read book French Today written by Carol Sanders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Today is a profile of the French language in its social context. British and French linguists examine trends in French throughout the French-speaking world, and address issues around prescriptivism, gender and language, and regional languages and dialects. The collection includes overviews of work done in particular areas and deeper analyses of sociolinguistic questions. One theme is how to represent and interpret data relating to language varieties that have been marginalised. Another concerns the ways in which French is adapting to the future, whether as a language of new technology, or as a vehicular language on the continent. All chapters of this book are in English, with examples and quotations in French, and a mixture of references given in both languages. At the end of each chapter, there are also texts in French, serving as illustration and as pointers to further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The selections are good and the translations are excellent."―Germaine Bree, New York University Drawn from two centuries of French literature, these superb selections by ten great writers span a wide variety of styles, philosophies, and literary creeds. The stories reflect not only the beliefs of various literary schools, but the preoccupations of French civilization, at the various times of their composition, with the metaphysical and psychological problems of man. Contents include Micromegas (Voltaire), La Messe de l'Athee (Honore de Balzac), La Legende de Saint Julien l'Hospitalier (Gustave Flaubert), Le Spleen de Paris (Charles Baudelaire), Menuet (Guy de Maupassant), Mort de Judas (Paul Claudel), Le Retour de l'Enfant Prodigue (Andre Gide), Grand-Lebrun (Francois Mauriac), Le Passe-Muraille (Marcel Ayme), and L'Hote (Albert Camus). Students of French, or those who wish to refresh their knowledge of the language, will welcome this treasury of masterly fiction. The selections are arranged chronologically, allowing the reader to witness the development of French literary art--from Voltaire to Camus. Excellent English translations appear on pages facing the Original French. Also included are a French-English vocabulary list, textural notes, and exercises. Unabridged, slightly revised Dover (1990) edition of the work published by Bantam Books, Inc., 1960.

Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane .

Book Je Parle Fran ais Un Peu

Download or read book Je Parle Fran ais Un Peu written by Dierdre Wolownick and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Je parle francais... un peu: Foundations in Beginning French teaches beginning French in a simple, clear, effective way. Many language textbooks focus solely on grammar, and are exclusively academic in focus. This engaging, interactive textbook makes students comfortable speaking and interacting in the target language, and puts them in charge of their own learning. Based on the premise that students best learn a language by using it to communicate with others rather than relying on technology, Je parle francais... un peu purposely steers students away from CDs, DVDs, and frenetic on-line learning. Instead, the book provides numerous opportunities for students to speak and converse with each other through a variety of activities, such as dialogues, stories, cultural readings, tongue-twisters, word games, and famous quotes. Also included are les Conversations fran aises, which are in-class skits that encourage students to have fun and experiment with the language without feeling intimidated by the need to be grammatically perfect. The book is concise, containing only the amount of material that can be covered in a one-semester course. Tear-out worksheets are built into the text, which are perfect for homework assignments or additional practice, thus making it unnecessary to buy a supplemental workbook for the course. The tone of the book is un-intimidating, and conversational. The ten chapters of the book teach the language through high-interest topics including college life and personal technology. Extensively class-tested, the material in Je parle francais... un peu gives students what they need to successfully master written and spoken French at the beginning level. Je parle francais... un peu is written for French 1 and 2 at the community college or lower division university level. It can also be used in Beginning French at the high school level. Dierdre Wolownick is Professor of French, Spanish, and ESL/EFL at American River College, Sacramento, CA. Since 1971, she has taught five foreign languages to students of all ages in New York, France, California, and Japan. Her credentials include an M.A. in French and B.A. in Romance Languages/Secondary Education (Queens College, CUNY), a D.U.E.L. (l'Universit de Reims, France), a Certificate in TESOL (UCLA), and many years evaluating international essays for Educational Testing Service. Having learned eight languages, Professor Wolownick knows what one needs to know in order to acquire language.

Jump in! The Gimmick Books are based on the author's many years of successfully teaching languages to tourists, business people, diplomats, and other international travelers.
