Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francois Villon: His Life and Times, 1431-1463 As we step back from the Past and stand here today before the old French chateau, glance for a moment at the country around us. To-day the word country calls up pleasant visions to the human mind. To-day poets sing of the beauty of the fields, and trees, and rivers, and mountains even to-daywe find some murmurings about verdure and flowers in the tapestries and songs of the folk who lived protected in the Chateaux of 1431, but the country beyond the chateau garden was a grim place, where men, women, and children lived the lives of beasts, half starved, overworked, and ever followed by three phantoms - the soldier, the wolf, and the robber. A peasant existed by virtue of his poverty - he was not worth killing or robbing; a wolf by virtue of his heels or his teeth; a soldier by the length of his sword; a noble by the strength of his castle;and a robber by the Sharpness of his dagger and his wits. The country, in fact, in the year of our Lord 1431 and for many years after, was a desolation between two cities, a place where corn was grown and men were robbed, where the lamb came into the world and the wolf came out of the wood. The wolves were perhaps the first among the visible terrors of the country, and one may gauge their ferocity from the fact that they attacked the towns. They fought the dogs in the streets of Paris itself, and slew women and children within the walls. After the wolf came the soldier. War was always looming up in the form of armed bands: now the English; now the Burgundians, more savage than the English; now the Arma gnacs, more savage than the Burgundians. And War to the poor man in the country did not come as war; he knew nothing of the name of the thing or the glory of the thing; he only knew it as an evil that added to the misery of life, - armed men breaking from among the trees, raiding the flocks, emptying the larder, firing the thatch; women ravished, children slain. In England the countryman was in comparative peace and safety, free from invasion and the sword. But here the soldier was one of the worst problems of a bitter life, and after the soldier the robber. Perishing with cold and hunger, he knocks at a house where a light is shin ing, and craves succor. Ah old knight admits him, warms him and feeds him, and discourses with him curiously upon poverty and honor, the distinction between soldiers and thieves, until the vagabond poet's impudence and effrontery so excite the ire of the old noble that he turns out the shameless one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jargon of Master Francois Villon, Clerk of Paris, A. D. 1452: Being Seven Ballads From the Thieves' Argot of the Xvth Century The seven Ballads in thejargon or the Thieves' Argot of that period, which are herewith set forth, appear to be advice and Warning - Sermons, they have been called - to his companions, the Brothers of La Coquille, and they are supposed to have been written about the year The theme of the Hangman's noose and of the Yawning prison seems to have beenever foremost in Villon's mind, and from these ideas he was never able to disasso/ ciate himself. Nor is this so strange, since the Archers of the Guard and the rack and gallows played a most if not the most imz portant part in the daily life of the xvth Century Parisian, and Villon himself was acquainted with them only too well. We are told that there were nineteen gibbets, in and around Paris, in the time of Louis XI and that the populace went en fete to all the public executions, chanting songs in ballad form and enjoying them/ selves to the uttermost. For our Poet these gibbets and gaunt Montfaulcon appear to have had a special fascination and likewise horror, he having escaped the hangman's clutches on two different occasions. Book Fran ois Villon in his Works

Download or read book Fran ois Villon in his Works written by Michael Freeman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the hundreds of books and scholarly articles which have been devoted to him, François Villon remains a mysterious figure who, in the words of the sort of paradox he applies to himself, appears both near yet far. Near because he seems to articulate feelings to which readers down the ages have been able to respond, far because the world he lived in seems to a modern reader a tantalizingly foreign one. No analysis of the poet's work is complete without some description of that world in all its physical and mental strangeness. This new book will also show how Villon consciously fashioned his own image, manipulating his original readers and offering them a version of himself and his talents designed to amuse, impress, move and perhaps deceive. For he had been a villain as well as a poet, and he uses selected episodes from his past together with a very personal treatment of the great literary and moral themes of his age not only to express his own conflicting emotions but also to demonstrate that he is a reformed man who needs and deserves sympathy and understanding. This consummate artist comes across in his deliberately ambiguous work as a loveable rogue, by turns jaunty and maudlin. The baffling persona he created raises many questions. The author of the present study looks in particular at the reception of Villon's work in his own day, suggesting that it was meant to be presented (and perhaps performed) as part of a process of rehabilitation and a return to the fold he had been forced to leave by his own behaviour. The poet's work might thus help him achieve social acceptance and the longed-for ‘maison et couche molle’. However, events on the streets of Paris in late 1462 would silence his voice forever.

Book Fran ois Villon Revisited

Download or read book Fran ois Villon Revisited written by David A. Fein and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Francois Villon, one of the greatest lyric poets of the late Middle Ages, lived on the margins of French society and died in obscurity. The details of Villon's life, including his disappearance after being exiled from Paris, are a puzzle that has occupied scholars throughout the twentieth century. His poems are rife with historical and personal references that were probably only meaningful to a select audience when they were written and are only explicable through supposition today. Fein suggests that a certain degree of uncertainty must be accepted by the student of Villon. In Francois Villon he directs his readers' attention to the "discernible patterns of language and images, changing voices, familiar thematic strands" evident throughout the historical specifics." "The range of subjects covered in this text reflects Fein's balanced and comprehensive approach. Fein moves from a biographical sketch of Villon to an exposition of his poetry. Fein examines not only Villon's masterpiece, Testament, but also his earlier long poem, the Lais, as well as five ballads. Fein explores biblical subtexts in Villon's work, noting his emphasis on the Old Testament. He also studies Villon's use of the literary and artistic motif of la danse macabre." "Fein understands the importance of Paris in Villon's work, so much that he composed this text with a map of fifteenth-century Paris at his side. Villon's poetry centers on the Latin quarter, and his characters encompass all walks of Parisian life. Paris gives Villon's work "its shape, its individuality, its vitality.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
