Book excerpt: A much-needed, precise and practical treatment of a key topic in the energy industry and beyond, Applied Concepts in Fractured Reservoirs is an invaluable reference for those in both industry and academia Authored by renowned experts in the field, this book covers the understanding, evaluation, and effects of fractures in reservoirs. It offers a comprehensive yet practical discussion and description of natural fractures, their origins, characteristics, and effects on hydrocarbon reservoirs. It starts by introducing the reader to basic definitions and classifications of fractures and fractured reservoirs. It then provides an outline for fractured-reservoir characterization and analysis, and goes on to introduce the way fractures impact operational activities. Well organized and clearly illustrated throughout, Applied Concepts in Fractured Reservoirs starts with a section on understanding natural fractures. It looks at the different types, their dimensions, and the mechanics of fracturing rock in extension and shear. The next section provides information on measuring and analyzing fractures in reservoirs. It covers: logging core for fractures; taking, measuring, and analyzing fracture data; new core vs. archived core; CT scans; comparing fracture data from outcrops, core, and logs; and more. The last part examines the effects of natural fractures on reservoirs, including: the permeability behavior of individual fractures and fracture systems; fracture volumetrics; effects of fractures on drilling and coring; and the interaction between natural and hydraulic fractures. Teaches readers to understand and evaluate fractures Compiles and synthesizes various concepts and descriptions scattered in literature and synthesizes them with unpublished oil-field observations and data, along with the authors’ own experience Bridges some of the gaps between reservoir engineers and geologists Provides an invaluable reference for geologists and engineers who need to understand naturally fractured reservoirs in order to efficiently extract hydrocarbons Illustrated in full color throughout Companion volume to the Atlas of Natural and Induced Fractures in Core

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persecution of Christians is on the increase worldwide. In Nigeria, persecution has had an immense impact on the religious, economic, and social life of Nigerians, especially in northern Nigeria. Many Christians are concerned about how to properly respond to such oppression. This book meticulously examines contemporary responses to persecution alongside biblical and historical experience using the theoretical framework of Fight, Flight, and Fortitude. The writer is convinced that if Christians respond to persecution properly the gospel witness will be strengthened and bridges for peaceful interrelationship will be built in communities experiencing religious and cultural diversity.

Book Seismic Visibility of Fractures

Download or read book Seismic Visibility of Fractures written by Laura J. Pyrak-Nolte and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The detection and characterization of fractures in rocks is a major concern to many branches of engineering geoscience. Fractures are major conduits along which fluids flow and they are both planes of weakness and a source of additional compliance in rock masses. In this thesis, a displacement- and velocity- discontinuity theory of wave propagation across a fracture is presented, as well as experimental data that validates use of this theory for wave propagation across fractures. In this theory, the fracture is represented as a non-welded boundary between two elastic half-spaces. The boundary conditions that describe the displacement discontinuity are: 1) the stress across the boundary is continuous; 2) the displacements are discontinuous. The ratio between the seismic stress and the discontinuity in particle displacement is the specific stiffness of the fracture. The corresponding boundary conditions for the velocity-discontinuity are: 1) the stress across the boundary is continuous; 2) the velocity is discontinuous across the boundary. The ratio between the seismic stress and the discontinuity in particle velocity is the specific viscosity of the fluid in the fracture.

Book Principles and Applications of ESR Spectroscopy

Download or read book Principles and Applications of ESR Spectroscopy written by Anders Lund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles and Applications of ESR Spectroscopy fills the gap between the detailed monographs in ESR spectroscopy and the general textbooks in molecular physics, physical chemistry, biochemistry or spectroscopy. The latter only briefly explain the underlying theory and do not provide details about applications, while the currently available ESR textbooks are primarily focused on the technique as such. This text is based upon the authors’ long experience of teaching the subject to a mixed audience, in the extreme case ranging from physics to biology. The potential of the method is illustrated with applications in fields such as molecular science, catalysis and environmental sciences, polymer and materials sciences, biochemistry and radiation chemistry/physics. Theoretical derivations have in general been omitted, as they have been presented repeatedly in previous works. The necessary theory is instead illustrated by practical examples from the literature.

Book Seismic Forward Modeling of Fractures and Fractured Medium Inversion

Download or read book Seismic Forward Modeling of Fractures and Fractured Medium Inversion written by Xiaoqin Cui and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed book systematically investigates subsurface geological fractures using rock mechanics, geology, and geophysics. Based on geological fracture mechanisms and fracture boundary conditions, it presents new finite-difference equations for the simulation of seismic wave responses to geological fractures, and proposes innovative AVO inversion equations for the accurate estimation of the rock properties of the fractured medium. It employs schematics, snapshots, color images and charts to demonstrate the mechanical characteristics of the fractures, the seismic wave-field response to the fractures, the seismic data attributes of the fractures and the rock properties of the fractures obtained via inversion. It provides a new methodology for enhancing geological fracture detection technology and for the accurate delineation of fractured reservoirs that ultimately benefits reservoir and mining engineers, geologists and geophysicists in terms of optimizing reservoir recovery, well performance and mining safety.

Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic treatment of the geometrical and transport properties of fractures, fracture networks, and fractured porous media. It is divided into two major parts. The first part deals with geometry of individual fractures and of fracture networks. The use of the dimensionless density rationalizes the results for the percolation threshold of the networks. It presents the crucial advantage of grouping the numerical data for various fracture shapes. The second part deals mainly with permeability under steady conditions of fractures, fracture networks, and fractured porous media. Again the results for various types of networks can be rationalized by means of the dimensionless density. A chapter is dedicated to two phase flow in fractured porous media.

Book After the Revolution

Download or read book After the Revolution written by Robert A. Dahl and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1990-11-28 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After the Revolution? is brief, tight, and to the point. . . . With its unusual clarity, it is a useful text for anyone concerned with politics today."--American Notes & Queries (on the first edition) "It is not often that a learned man puts down so simply, clearly, and briefly the essence of what he understands about a subject. I have gone from problems to proffered solutions with only a glimmering of the principles Professor Dahl sets down so lucidly, but as he describes them they form a perfectly congruent part of the pattern."--John W. Gardner (on the first edition) In this classic book, one of the world's most distinguished political scientists discusses the problems, strengths, and weaknesses of democracy as a method of decision making for modern governments. Robert A. Dahl examines the principles on which the authority of democratic government rests, the question of who "the people" should be in the concept of "rule by the people," and the kinds of democracy that fit different situations. In a new chapter Dahl acknowledges the importance of market-oriented economies to democratic institutions but advises newly democratic governments to adopt a system in which unregulated markets are modified by a certain amount of governmental intervention.

Download or read book FORENSIC OSTEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS written by Scott I. Fairgrieve and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume on case studies in forensic osteology with background information on how osteological analysis is applied to human/faunal remains found in legal contexts is primarily designed for students of forensic anthropology/osteology who have a background in human anatomy and/or osteology. It also will be of interest to those individuals lacking this background and who may very well want to read the book for its many case studies. Although many journals publish case reports, there are instances when a more detailed and full description of circumstances are warranted. Further, beginning students initially require a more thorough treatment of the thinking behind the application of analytical techniques; an important aspect that may not be covered in the professional literature. Based on the foregoing, the premise of this book is that each case has a unique quality and thus presents unique problems for the analyst to approach. It is important for the reader to understand the limits for forensic osteology by examining not only its successes but also its failures. This book presents this type of information. The chapters appear as follows: Forensic Osteological Analysis: An Introduction; Of Beasts and Humans: A Case of Recognition; Identification of Human Skeletal Remains: Was He a She or She a He?; Sex Determination: XX or XY from the Human Skeleton; Identification of a Missing Person Using Biomechanical and DNA Analysis: A Case Study; DISH Rats and a Rolex; Death on the Danforth; The Identification of the Remains of Don Francisco Pizarro; Clinkers on the Little Bighorn Battlefield: In Situ Investigation of Scattered Recent Cremains; The Wrong Urn: Commingling of Cremains in Mortuary Practices; Cremated Remains and Expert Testimony in a Homicide Case; An Anthropological Investigation of a Rural Homicide Scene; Forensic Osteology of Strangulation; Pathological Changes on Human Skeletal Remains: Before, During or After?; Unusual Skeletal Anomalies and Pathologies in Forensic Casework; Biker's Bones: An Avocational Syndrome; Identity Crisis: Two Case Studies -- Success and Failure in Personal Identification Determination; Mass Disasters: Comments and Discussion Regarding the Hinton Train Collision of 1986; The Role of Forensic Anthropology in Human Rights Issues; and Forensic Entomology: The Use of Insects in Death Investigations.

Book Christianity and Controversies over Homosexuality in Contemporary Africa

Download or read book Christianity and Controversies over Homosexuality in Contemporary Africa written by Ezra Chitando and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues of homosexuality are the subject of public and political controversy in many African societies today. Frequently, these controversies receive widespread attention both locally and globally, such as with the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda. In the international media, these cases tend to be presented as revealing a deeply-rooted homophobia in Africa fuelled by religious and cultural traditions. But so far little energy is expended in understanding these controversies in all their complexity and the critical role religion plays in them. Complementing the companion volume, Public Religion and the Politics of Homosexuality in Africa, this book investigates Christian politics and discourses on homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors present case studies from various African countries, from Nigeria to South Africa and from Cameroon to Uganda, focusing on Pentecostal, Catholic and mainline Protestant churches. They critically examine popular Christian theologies that perpetuate homophobia and discrimination, but they also discuss contestations of such discourses and emerging alternative Christian perspectives that contribute to the recognition of sexual diversity, social justice and human rights in contemporary Africa.
