Book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures written by David Broek and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain an appraisal of the state of the art of fail-safe design, the author made an investory of fail-safe design methods applied by various aerospace companies and of research work relevant to the engineering approach of fatigue-crack propagation and residual strength. This memorandum is based on information from discussions with personnel of several companies and research laboratories, with the main emphasis on plane stress and transitional fracture behavior. The memorandum presents a brief description of the general approach to the fail-safe problem, an analysis of several of the existing methods that use this approach, including their shortcomings, and a summary of the data required for a good fail-safe design. A specific approach proposed for the presentation in MIL-HDBK-5 of data pertinent to the fail-safe design concept is evaluated in terms of its applicability to that concept. (Author).

Book Engineering Criteria and Analysis Methodology for the Appraisal of Potential Fracture Resistant Primary Aircraft Structure

Download or read book Engineering Criteria and Analysis Methodology for the Appraisal of Potential Fracture Resistant Primary Aircraft Structure written by J. C. Ekvall and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design criteria and analysis procedures are presented such that a design system can be implemented to minimize the occurrence of major structural failures due to the presence of undetected damage. The design criteria define a flaw growth durability requirement and crack growth structural integrity requirements for three classes of inspectability of the structure; noninspectable, NDI in-service inspectable, and walk-around inspectable. Currently available crack growth and residual strength methods of analysis are presented which can be used to predict the remaining life and strength of damaged structure. To illustrate the use of the criteria and methods of analysis, a design study was conducted of the lower wing surface of a fighter/ attack aircraft. The results of this study indicate that the structure could meet the design criteria with little or no weight penalty using 7075-T76 aluminum and annealed Ti-6Al-4V, and provided adequate inspection techniques and inspection frequencies are applied throughout the life of the aircraft.

Book Structural Integrity Analysis and Verification of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Structural Integrity Analysis and Verification of Aircraft Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AFGROW is a workstation-based, graphically interactive computer program for simulation of fatigue crack growth in various structural geometries subject to spectral loading. It is a highly flexible code utilizing standard user-interface objects such as push-buttons and menus, to create a simple and intuitive environment for the fracture mechanics analyst. The program insulates the user from the complexities of data files and their formats by performing all file creation, retrieval an management tasks. AFGROW is a direct descendent of the computer code, MODGRO, with many changes and new capabilities completely rewritten in C computer language. AEGROW takes the best features of its predecessors and combines them with new ideas into a single, manageable code. Some of the more useful features of AFGROW include the ability to use a material database library for crack growth rate and mechanical property data, an option to approximate stress intensity factor solutions for arbitrary stress fields, and the ability to import stress spectra of virtually any size. This manual describes the features and capabilities of AFGROW and the use of the Graphical User Interface (GUl) to define problems and perform analyses. The various files used in AFGROW, their naming conventions and file formats are presented. The user-interface, with all menu options and dialogs, is included, as well as instructions on obtaining AFGRO via anonymous file transfer protocol (FTP). The tutorial describes the steps involved in setting up and analyzing an example problem.

Book Fracture Mechanics Guidelines for Aircraft Structural Applications

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics Guidelines for Aircraft Structural Applications written by D. P. Wilhem and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document provides the guidelines, limitations, and modifications required to perform a structural, fracture analysis using Griffith-Irwin, fracture mechanics principles. It serves as an introduction to fracture mechanics for those personnel who are concerned with fracture strength estimates for aerospace structural applications. Illustrations and hypothetical examples are included which show how engineering solutions for critical crack size and fracture stress may be made. The critical stress intensity (fracture toughness) concept is used as a basic factor for the fracture analysis of materials. For most crack situations, a stress intensity factor can be computed which can be related to critical conditions and estimates made of critical crack lengths, stresses, and crack propagation behaviors. To provide a complete and accurate fracture analysis, the user is encouraged to become familiar with all aspects of the analysis and its limitations.

Book Advances in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Advances in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews some of the advances that have been made in stress analyses of cracked aircraft components, in the understanding of the fatigue and fatigue-crack growth process, and in the prediction of residual strength of complex aircraft structures with widespread fatigue damage. Finite-element analyses of cracked metallic structures are now used to determine accurate stress-intensity factors for cracks at structural details. Observations of small-crack behavior at open and rivet-loaded holes and the development of small-crack theory has lead to the prediction of stress-life behavior for components with stress concentrations under aircraft spectrum loading. Fatigue-crack growth under simulated aircraft spectra can now be predicted with the crack-closure concept. Residual strength of cracked panels with severe out-of-plane deformations (buckling) in the presence of stiffeners and multiple-site damage can be predicted with advanced elastic-plastic finite-element analyses and the critical crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) fracture criterion. These advances are helping to assure continued safety of aircraft structures.Newman, J.
