Book Dynamics and Management of Reasoning Processes

Download or read book Dynamics and Management of Reasoning Processes written by John-Jules Ch. Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the 6th volume in the DRUMS Handbook series, is part of the after math of the successful ESPRIT project DRUMS (Defeasible Reasoning and Un certainty Management Systems) which took place in two stages from 1989-1996. In the second stage (1993-1996) a work package was introduced devoted to the topics Reasoning and Dynamics, covering both the topics of 'Dynamics of Rea soning', where reasoning is viewed as a process, and 'Reasoning about Dynamics', which must be understood as pertaining to how both designers of and agents within dynamic systems may reason about these systems. The present volume presents work done in this context. This work has an emphasis on modelling and formal techniques in the investigation of the topic "Reasoning and Dynamics", but it is not mere theory that occupied us. Rather research was aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice. Therefore also real-life applications of the modelling techniques were considered, and we hope this also shows in this volume, which is focused on the dynamics of reasoning processes. In order to give the book a broader perspective, we have invited a number of well-known researchers outside the project but working on similar topics to contribute as well. We have very pleasant recollections of the project, with its lively workshops and other meetings, with the many sites and researchers involved, both within and outside our own work package.

Book Web Reasoning and Rule Systems

Download or read book Web Reasoning and Rule Systems written by Pascal Hitzler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-20 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Semantic Web aims at allowing knowledge to be freely accessed and - changed by software. It is now widely recognized that if the Semantic Web is to contain deep knowledge, the need for new representation and reasoning te- niques is critical. These techniques need to ?nd the right trade-o? between - pressiveness, scalability, and robustness to deal with the inherently incomplete, contradictory, and uncertain nature of knowledge on the Web. The annual International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR) addresses these needs and has grown into a major international forum for the discussion and dissemination of new results concerning Web Reasoning and Rule Systems. The ?rst three International Conferences on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (see http://www.rr-conference.org), held in Innsbruck, A- tria (2007), Karlsruhe, Germany (2008), and Chantilly, Virginia, USA (2009), received enthusiastic support from the Web Reasoning community. This volume contains the papers presented at the Fourth International C- ference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR 2010), which was held in Bressanone/Brixen, Italy, September 22-24, 2010, and which continued the - cellence of the RR series. Book Writings of Charles S Peirce Volume 8 1890 1892

Download or read book Writings of Charles S Peirce Volume 8 1890 1892 written by Charles S. Peirce and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 8 of this landmark edition follows Peirce from May 1890 through July 1892—a period of turmoil as his career unraveled at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. The loss of his principal source of income meant the beginning of permanent penury and a lifelong struggle to find gainful employment. His key achievement during these years is his celebrated Monist metaphysical project, which consists of five classic articles on evolutionary cosmology. Also included are reviews and essays from The Nation in which Peirce critiques Paul Carus, William James, Auguste Comte, Cesare Lombroso, and Karl Pearson, and takes part in a famous dispute between Francis E. Abbot and Josiah Royce. Peirce's short philosophical essays, studies in non-Euclidean geometry and number theory, and his only known experiment in prose fiction complete his production during these years. Peirce's 1883-1909 contributions to the Century Dictionary form the content of volume 7 which is forthcoming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To endow computers with common sense is one of the major long-term goals of artificial intelligence research. One approach to this problem is to formalize commonsense reasoning using mathematical logic. Commonsense Reasoning: An Event Calculus Based Approach is a detailed, high-level reference on logic-based commonsense reasoning. It uses the event calculus, a highly powerful and usable tool for commonsense reasoning, which Erik Mueller demonstrates as the most effective tool for the broadest range of applications. He provides an up-to-date work promoting the use of the event calculus for commonsense reasoning, and bringing into one place information scattered across many books and papers. Mueller shares the knowledge gained in using the event calculus and extends the literature with detailed event calculus solutions that span many areas of the commonsense world. The Second Edition features new chapters on commonsense reasoning using unstructured information including the Watson system, commonsense reasoning using answer set programming, and techniques for acquisition of commonsense knowledge including crowdsourcing. - Understand techniques for automated commonsense reasoning - Incorporate commonsense reasoning into software solutions - Acquire a broad understanding of the field of commonsense reasoning - Gain comprehensive knowledge of the human capacity for commonsense reasoning
