Book A Guide to Wellhead Protection

Download or read book A Guide to Wellhead Protection written by Jonathan Douglas Witten and published by American Planning Association. This book was released on 1995 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons to protect groundwater. More than half of the United States relies on it for drinking water. The population of the U.S. has increased by 20 million in the past 10 years, while the amount of groundwater available for consumption has remained the same. One gallon of gasoline can contaminate 1 million gallons of groundwater. And the cost of contamination clean up far exceeds that of a prevention program. This report provides the information needed to start a wellhead protection program. It reviews the fundamentals of water hydrology, the causes and effects of contamination, wellhead management and protection, and financial strategies available to communities interested in starting a program. The report also includes a table of land uses and their potential contaminants, a matrix that describes regulatory and nonregulatory devices to be used in a program, and a sample ordinance.

In this eagerly awaited 2005 edition, he gives these arguments even more clout by adding new information and insights gained in the last decade. Count on Rypkema to be entertaining, provocative, and convincing as he describes and demonstrates how strategies that include preservation help communities make cost-effective use of resources, create jobs, provide affordable housing, revive downtowns, build tourism, attract new businesses and workers, and more.

Book Riparian Areas

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2002-10-10
  • ISBN : 0309082951
  • Pages : 449 pages

Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.
