Download or read book Ninth Annual Report of the State Board of Forestry written by Chas. C. Deam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the State Board of Forestry: 1909 The problems presented to the board are many and complex. Great progress has been made during the past few years in mould ing public sentiment, and educating the people to the forestry movement. The public schools are now giving some time to the teaching of forestry, whereas formerly such instruction was merely incidental. The press has ever been active and willing to carry on this campaign of education. The high price of lumber and the changed climatic conditions are calling attention to the rapid disappearance of the forests and the early necessity of reforesting. The numerous inquiries received by the board is sufficient evidence that the people are aroused to the need of immediate forestry work. Excerpt: ...may need to extinguish such fire, and himself and such help as he employs shall be paid by the township trustee from the general expense funds of the township at the rate of $1.50 per day for the time actually occupied in extinguishing such fire." The methods of fighting forest fires are many. In some States forest fire departments and expensive forest fire equipment for penetrating woodlands and combating fires are maintained at government expense. A large retinue of men are constantly engaged. The Board believes the above law, fully enforced, will be far in advance of any other form of forest fire protection, because of the readiness of organization, if interestedly followed, and the expense of the same is reduced to the minimum and only for the actual employment. It, however, is like any other law not enforced. It is but a dead letter. The provisions of this law put into effect and the methods here given for fighting forest fires will reach the desired effect. Back firing is the first and most successful means of checking forest fires. A sufficient force of men placed advantageously in advance of a forest fire and a burned line established around or ahead of the forest fire will see its finish when the two fires meet. This burned line can be formed by having the rubbish raked from a space to prevent the fire's extending only in the direction of the forest fire as it advances. Men following setting fire to the rubbish and seeing that the fire does not get over the line raked will soon place between the forest fire and the working line a sufficient burned over space to prevent the fire's further advance after the fires meet. Sufficient distance ahead of the forest fire should be chosen for the burned line to admit of a good strip in...

No more ideal spot could be found upon the whole reservation for growing seedling trees than the one now occupied for that purpose. Many thousands of young trees have been started therein. When of sufficient age these will form the stock from which plantings are to be made in all available places upon the reserva tion. Lufburrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Biennial Report of the State Forester to the State Forestry Board of the State of Georgia, 1925-1926 Forestry had its beginning in Georgia in the Forestry Act of 1921 providing for a State Board of Forestry composed of five ex - officio members and four citizens appointed by the Governor from the State at Large. The duties of this Board were purely investigative, and to report to the General Assembly of Georgia with whatever recommendations the said Board sees fit to make. However, there were no funds available for the work. The first official report to the General Assembly of Georgia was made in 1922 in compliance with the Act of 1921. The splendid report of this Board received most favorable com ment from all parts of the country. The limited number of copies print-ed was soon exhausted by the enormous demand for this information. The report gave a perfect picture of the forestry situation in Georgia and contained most valuable information per taining to the forest industrial development of the State and its subsequent decline since 1909. Since the report of 1922 covers so completely the industrial phase of the forest problems, the present timber supply and the direct influence which this natural resource has had upon the development of the State, it. Will not be necessary to cover these vital points in this report except by reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Report of the State Board of Forestry

Download or read book Report of the State Board of Forestry written by Maryland State Board of Forestry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the State Board of Forestry: For 1906 and 1907 The Maryland State Board of Forestry was created by the Legislature of 1906 under an act, ' To establish a State Board of Forestry, and to promote forest interests and arboriculture in the State. The board was organized in May, 1906, and has since been actively engaged in promoting an interest in forestry, and in ascertaining the forest condi tions and needs of the State. The first forest work under State initiative was done in 1900 by the Maryland Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Forestry Bureau, when a study of the forest conditions in Allegany County was made, and a report published. This was in the nature of an economic survey, to ascertain the relation which the forests bear to other natural resources of the State, their value, and means of im provement. The study of Allegany County was followed by similar work in Cecil, Calvert, Garrett and St. Mary's Counties, the results of which have already been published; investigations were also taken up in Worcester, Kent and Harford Counties, a map of the first county showing the forest growth by commercial types, having been issued. These reports supplied accurate information on the forest conditions and needs of the counties, and furnished an intelligent basis for gen eral legislation. As a result of these forest studies it became apparent that the importance of the work and its special needs required a sepa rate State department to properly handle it. This led to the introduc tion of the Forestry Bill in the last Legislature, and its prompt enact ment into law. Since July, 1906, all of the State forest work has been conducted by the State Board of Forestry, through a State Forester, who is directly responsible to the Board for his official acts. The main lines of activity of the Board of Forestry are briefly set forth under the following headings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
