HE war spirit was very intense during my pastorate in Pittsfield, and regiments were going to and returning from the seat of war, and much was written of a more or less patriotic nature. Our regiments, as they returned from the war, with tattered banners, thinned ranks and scarred veterans, were tendered as hearty a reception as the warmhearted citizens of western Massachusetts could give. The Forty-ninth regiment was a pet regiment, and on its return was warmly greeted, and I wrote the following poem, which was published in the newspapers at the time, and was afterwards published in the history of the regiment, entitled, "Life with the 49th Massachusetts Volunteers, by Henry T. Johns,"and is found on pages 373 and 374. IN MEMORIA. The Fallen Brave of the Forty-Ninth. John Wesley Carhart, pastor of the Methodist-Episcopal Church there. A few years later, while serving as Presiding Elder of the Appleton, WI, District of the Methodist Church, an "Open Letter" written by fellow Methodist Minister George C. Haddock, and published in the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, would change the course of John Wesley Carhart's life forever. John Wesley Carhart also was a prolific writer. One of his books, "Norma Trist," was one of the first novels to deal with homosexuality. He self-published the book and was arrested for sending pornography through the mail when he began filling mail orders for the book. Another of his books, "Under Palmetto and Pine," was a sensitive treatment of the problems facing African Americans living in the South, especially in Texas, during the late 1880's.
