Download or read book The Charcoal Foundry written by David J. Gingery and published by David J. Gingery Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charcoal Foundry, the first book in the "Metal Working Shop From Scrap Series", gives you plans for building a metal melting furnace and instructions on basic pattern making and molding. All the information needed to set up a foundry in your work shop can be found in this book. Simply stated, if you can build a sand castle or make a mud pie, you can make a sand mold to produce castings for your metal shop projects. The main ingredient in these projects is scrap aluminum and pot metal. The only tools you need to get started are ordinary home shop hand tools, many of which are probably already in your possession. Much of the remainder is found as salvage or cast-off and little expense need be involved. The charcoal foundry is simple to build and operate and the initial cost is so low that it can be in the reach of nearly anyone. And the fundamentals of pattern-making and molding are easily understood and mastered. Once you have built the charcoal foundry and the metal lathe in book 2, there is little beyond your reach by way of shop equipment. Build as large or small as you wish and you are your own parts supply company. If you already have some machine shop equipment, you will find that adding a foundry to your shop greatly expands your capacity. Being able to produce your own castings for accessories and equipment is a great advantage. Design your own, make a copy or follow a plan. It's easy when you're in control and can produce your own castings.

Book Foundry Manual

Download or read book Foundry Manual written by United States Navy and published by . This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Manual is intended primarily for use by foundry personnel aboard repair ships and tenders. The recommended practices are based on procedures proved workable under Navy conditions and are supplemented by information from industrial sources. The Manual is divided into two general sections. The first section, chapters 1 through 13, contains information of a general nature, such as "How Metals Solidify," "Designing a Casting," "Sands for Molds and Cores," "Gates, Risers, and Chills," and "Description and Operation of Melting Furnaces." Subjects covered in these chapters are generally applicable to all of the metals that may be cast aboard ship. The second section, chapters 14 through 21, contains information on specific types of alloys, such as "Copper-Base Alloys," "Aluminum-Base Alloys," "Cast Iron," and "Steel." Specific melting practices, suggestions for sand mixes, molding practices, gating, and risering are covered in these chapters. This manual has been written with the "how-to-do-it" idea as the principal aim. Discussions as to the "why" of certain procedures have been kept to a minimum. This manual contains information that should result in the production of consistently better castings by repair ship personnel.

Book Foundry Work

Download or read book Foundry Work written by R. E. Wendt and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundry Work: A d104 on Molding, Dry-Sand Core-Making, and the Melting and Mixing of Metals In preparing this book, it has been the authors aim to provide a suitable text for schools and colleges and for use by apprentices in commercial shops. It is elementary to the extent that the student can grasp the fundamental principles of foundry work, yet deep enough to give a general working knowledge of foundry practice. The book consists of three parts. The first will enable the student to secure a general knowledge of foundry work, of the sizes and types of blast furnaces, and of the making of pig iron. The second provides instructions for practice in molding, coremaking and other parts of foundry work. The third part is devoted to the mixing and melting of metals. The material contained in this volume was obtained as a direct result of the authors experience in teaching apprentices in commercial shops and engineering students at Purdue University. The information on making coke, mining iron ore, operating blast furnaces, and chemical analysis of iron has been inserted to round out the volume and represents good commercial, practice. For many of the drawings the author is indebted to students taking foundry work under him, and for other illustrations to foundry supply firms.
