Offering a full statistical and institutional description of Brazil's economy, this book includes a review of the major controversies surrounding such issues as the high degree of concentration in the country's income distribution, the causes of inflation, the impact of various stabilization programs, and the influences of the state in the economy. Book Wealth and Poverty in Contemporary Brazilian Capitalism

Download or read book Wealth and Poverty in Contemporary Brazilian Capitalism written by Gustavo Moura de Cavalcanti Mello and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses contemporary capitalism from Brazil and from the Marxian critique of political economy, particularly; the co-dependency of wealth and poverty and of civilization and barbarism; the current tendency towards capital over-accumulation and the specific form assumed by the capitalist crisis in recent decades; the financialisation process of capital accumulation, its effects on the world of labour; and the place that the state assumes in this broad process. Current trends toward increasing social inequality, impoverishment of large sections of the population, precariousness of labour and rising unemployment, environmental destruction, the spread of austerity policies and the suppression of social policies, the rise of the far right (together with the strengthening of racism, misogyny, xenophobia, political and religious fanaticism and all manner of intolerance, etc.), low economic growth, the primacy of the financial dimension of capital accumulation, all need to be understood in their multiple and complex articulations, as fundamental and inherent elements of contemporary capitalism, associating empirical analysis with conceptual construction. Because they are strictly contradictory processes, a dialectical approach is required that reclaims the Marxian legacy, and aims to contribute to updating it, seeking to bring new and relevant elements to the Marxist debate, based on a specific interpretation of Marx's work, and as an immediate empirical basis the Brazilian reality.

Book The Reform Process in Brazil Examining the Roots of the economic stability and performance of Latin America s largest country

Download or read book The Reform Process in Brazil Examining the Roots of the economic stability and performance of Latin America s largest country written by Christian Sprinkmeyer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar, language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes the path that Brazil’s economy has taken to reach today’s status; the status of a stable economy that shows high potential to meet the challenging expectations that economists set on it. The idea is to source the roots of the economic stability and performance of Latin America’s largest country and to highlight the implications it will have in the near and remote future. Chapter 2 focuses on the Real Plan launched in 1994. A set of reforms which transformed Brazil’s economy from a protected economy facing four-digit inflation rates into a stable economy capable of competing with developed economies. It discusses the implementation of the Real Plan, its measures and its positive and negative consequences for the Brazilian economy. Furthermore we are going to deal with the recent past of Brazil’s economy since the presidential elections in 2002, when the leader of the workers’ party Lula da Silva was elected. We focus on the economic policy of the president and its government, whose election has almost led to the default of the Brazilian state because financial markets were afraid that the socialist candidate would pursue a 180 degree turn compared to the neoliberal economic policy of his predecessor. We analyze why Brazil was one of the last countries being affected by the financial crisis and why it was one of the first to leave it behind. Chapter 3 analyzes on the one hand the agricultural, the industrial and the service sector and on the other hand the trade and the domestic demand in Brazil. First of all we will clearly show the development of the three economic sectors until today and point out their influences on each other. In this context we will search for reasons for the strongly growing service sector and for the decreasing economic relevance of the agricultural and the industrial service sector. But of course we cannot neglect those two sectors in the Brazilian economy. The fourth chapter of this paper evaluates the future potential of Brazil. The basis for this section is an analysis of the four conditions for growth mentioned by Goldman Sachs (2003).

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Brazilian Economy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Brazilian Economy written by Edmund Amann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil is a globally vital but troubled economy. This volume offers comprehensive insight into Brazil's economic development, focusing on its most salient characteristics and analyzing its structural features across various dimensions. This innovative Oxford Handbook provides an understanding of the economy's evolution over time and highlights the implications of the past trajectory and decisions for current challenges and opportunities. The opening section covers the country's economic history, beginning with the colonial economy, through import-substitution, to the era of neoliberalism. Second, it analyses Brazil's broader place in the global economy, and considers the ways in which this role has changed, and is likely to change, over coming years. Particular attention is given to the productive sectors of Brazil's economy, for example manufacturing, agriculture, services, energy, and infrastructure. In addition to discussions of regional differences within Brazil, socio-economic dimensions are examined. These include income distribution, human capital, environmental issues, and health. Also included is a discussion of Brazil in the world economy, such as the increase in "South-South" cooperation and trade as well as foreign direct investment. Last but not least is a discussion of the role of the Brazilian state in the economy, whether through state enterprises, competition policy, or corruption.

Book How Brazil Benefited From Its Decolonization Stage

Download or read book How Brazil Benefited From Its Decolonization Stage written by Caroline Mutuku and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1.3, , language: English, abstract: It is believed that the Portugal rule in Latin America, primarily Brazil, established sustainable social, political and economic structures which enabled Brazil to achieve regional prominence. In most colonies such as Guatemala which was ruled by the Spaniards, colonial administration caused social fragmentation of the indigenous communities because their political structures were based on social hierarchies. As a result, decolonization was characterized with poverty and social discrimination leading to ethnic tensions and perennial civil wars. In contrast, Portugal established a diverse version of administration in Brazil in which a centralized administration enhanced the unification of the colony. That, in turn, favored social and economic growth. It is believed that the monarchy republic contributed to Brazilian political sovereignty during the decolonization stage. Therefore, this paper will discuss the colonial benefits to Brazil which led to its decolonization stage. It will provide a comprehensive overview of Brazil’s expansion in the colonial era, political changes and economic advances towards decolonization. Brazil’s progress is attributable to its decolonization, which set altruistic economic and political systems. Its economic foundation is rooted to the colonial economy, whereas its political and social structure reflects exceptional autonomy from the other Latin American countries. It is believed that the Portugal colonization in Brazil opened the country to the international market for its economic expansion, leading to a rapid economic growth and development during the colonial era. Despite the favorable impact of Brazil’s decolonization which has propelled the country to great heights, especially in regard to the global economy, historical events, which occurred prior to the decolonization stage, had a significant impact to the country’s rapid growth and development.
