It is shown that economic equilibria also ensure economic sustainability. Because economic crises are present in economic disequilibria, the realization of the economic sustainability prevents systemic (self-made) economic crises and also ensures welfare, So it is logical to realize economic sustainability consequently, in spite of the dominance of political compromises in democratic societies.

An immediate and extensive global course correction across the board would, however, be required. Thus far in fact, the price paid for the success of globalisation has been very high--environmental degradation and a global social split. Terms such as sustainability or balanced growth have become buzzwords. In practice, they are often a desirable vision rather than an achievable objective. Why? Doubts may arise about the extent to which such concepts are compatible with a modern market economy. Is balanced growth possible at all? Is it reasonable to accept balanced growth as a norm? Empirical evidence suggests that the actual worldwide economic growth is not balanced at all.
