Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging to the forefront of sustainable production and consumption are a promising and rapidly evolving concept known as Voluntary Standard Systems (VSS). They encompass the three pillars of sustainability – social, environmental and economic aspects and consequently they can be considered as a tool, which makes sustainable development visible. Currently, they are becoming a significant element in international trade and in the promotion of sustainable development strategies, especially in the context of globalised markets and supply chains. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the current VSS concepts: from their nature and functioning, to the future outlook for their development. It places VSS in the broader context of global development issues and challenges, including development policy and international sustainability commitments, progress towards achieving ‘green economy’ and meeting climate protection targets. The volume contains also a representative selection of case studies which demonstrate their wide range of application in different sectors of the economy.

Book Reflecting on Sustainability Standards

Download or read book Reflecting on Sustainability Standards written by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the roundtables of the Voluntary Sustainability Standards' (VSS) Academy Advisory Council Roundtables. The roundtables aimed to foster the debate on the possibilities and limitations of sustainability standards as tools to environmental, social and economic sustainability. They were jointly organized by the United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) and EVIDENSIA, in collaboration with the KU Leuven Center for Global Governance. ǂb This paper summarizes the discussions and outcomes of the three roundtable discussions. It brings different perspectives on Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) together which can inform and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of VSS effectiveness through GVCs. Through this paper, the "effectiveness" of VSS is defined along multiple dimensions, all of which are covered and assessed. A first dimension, goal-attainment effectiveness, focuses on the impact of VSS on a range of social, economic and environmental indicators. A second dimension, process effectiveness, analyses the degree to which VSS are adopted by economic operators and the drivers for adoption. A third dimension, constitutive effectiveness, focuses on the degree to which VSS change the overall approach of actors involved in the policy process towards sustainability, i.e., the degree to which their theories of change are used more widely. The role of voluntary sustainability standards on international trade is also debated and discussed.65

Book Voluntary Sustainability Standards

Download or read book Voluntary Sustainability Standards written by Danielle Denny and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article begins by explaining private standards in an international context. On one hand, standards have an important role in shaping social environmental sustainability and therefore promoting economic, political, cultural and geographical development. On the other hand, their uncoordinated proliferation can generate misleading signals and measurements, compromising their ability to fulfill their role. The non-governmental nature of these regulations poses challenges to uniform standardization across the global value chain. In face of this problem, some countries have launched national platforms to establish minimal criteria on which the standard can be created. This study argues that this kind of meta-regulation is necessary.
