Download or read book Another Place at the Table written by Kathy Harrison and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The startling and ultimately uplifting narrative of one woman's thirteen-year experience as a foster parent. For more than a decade, Kathy Harrison has sheltered a shifting cast of troubled youngsters-the offspring of prostitutes and addicts; the sons and daughters of abusers; and teenage parents who aren't equipped for parenthood. All this, in addition to raising her three biological sons and two adopted daughters. What would motivate someone to give herself over to constant, largely uncompensated chaos? For Harrison, the answer is easy. Another Place at the Table is the story of life at our social services' front lines, centered on three children who, when they come together in Harrison's home, nearly destroy it. It is the frank first-person story of a woman whose compassionate best intentions for a child are sometimes all that stand between violence and redemption.

Book Steps to a New Future

Download or read book Steps to a New Future written by Morna L. Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we were preparing for our last foster child to leave us, I made a comment to that foster child that I should write a book about my experiences. She said, "Then why don't you!" Although I had thought about it for quite some time prior to that, I never thought that I would actually sit down and extend this opportunity to others. This information is for anyone who has entertained the thought of helping children. This is a great desire to have. A warm heart is sure to follow the success of any given occasion. This is a story about foster care and adoption. It's not just any story; this is a true story. This is a story of love, diligence, sacrifice, kindness, and willingness to be selfless. This is my story. In the life of every child, they should be able to imagine hopes, dreams, goals, and ways how to be able to achieve them. Instead, I have learned that survival techniques tend to take the place of such thoughts if you are a foster child. Dreams can be crushed, and reality becomes an everyday living nightmare. When this happens, what then? Children are taken into foster homes every day. Foster parents willingly give their time and talents to help those in need. This achievement I believe needs to be a built-in passion. You are not paid for your services as a foster parent. You are, however, reimbursed for your kindness. This is not a get-rich-quick plan. If so, there would be a lot of rich foster parents out there, including us! A passion for life has to be restored in children when such difficult situations arise as a result of inhumane behavior. It is hoped that this information will increase your decision to want to adopt, to help those in need. You, in turn, will find the peace and contentment that your restless heart so richly deserves. These children come from all walks of life, from every background imaginable to mankind. And some backgrounds that aren't imaginable too. They come from all types of situations. Not only will your eyes be opened to a different world of a reality beyond your comprehensible grasp but you will also gain an appreciation for what you have rather than for what you want to have. This information is to help you gain a knowledge of the world of foster care. The questions that have intrigued your mind for years as you have watched your neighbors bring in children that are not theirs can now be answered. Although it is not rude to ask foster parents questions of interest in your behalf, you won't have to worry about daring to ask them questions anymore. This information is not only intended for your education but also to help you maintain your sanity while caring for foster children in your home or the worry of what others might think about what you are doing as a foster parent. This is not an easy thing to do. I don't believe from the bottom of my heart that it was ever meant to be. However, I believe that there are certain people on this earth who care about doing this work simply because they have the kind of heart that can handle it. Not all people can. There was actually a time in our lives when our parents asked us to not do foster care anymore. They had seen so many children and had witnessed what they had been through so many times that they just couldn't take it anymore. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to open your heart and your home to help out a stranger and to be able to learn to love them while they are with you and then in turn to be able to miss them when they leave your home. You know if you are that kind of person because you will feel it in your heart. Should you choose to take this step, there will be a support system there for you to help you along your way. Not everyone will understand why you have chosen to do this. However, you will know in your heart if it is the right thing for you to do. If you feel you can handle what these children have been through and that you won't drop your jaw from shock when you hear each and eve

Download or read book Maybe Days written by Jennifer Wilgocki and published by American Psychological Association. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will I live with my parents again? Will I stay with my foster parents forever? For children in foster care, the answer to many questions is often "maybe." Maybe Days addresses the questions, feelings, and concerns these children most often face. Honest and reassuring, it also provides basic information that children want and need to know, including the roles of various people in the foster care system and whom to ask for help. An extensive afterword for adults caring for foster children describes the child's experience, underscores the importance of open communication, and outlines a variety of ways to help children adjust to the "maybe days"—and to thrive. From the Note to Foster Parents and Other Adults: The enormity of adjustment that children in foster care are asked to make is hard to over-state. Children in foster care may experience and express a range of feelings, many of which may emerge during the reading of this book. Multiple feelings may occur at the same time and may include: Relief and a sense of safety Happiness and a sense of enjoyment Sadness Anger Fear or worry Confusion Guilt Shame Loneliness Sense of loss Some children respond well to verbal discussion about their feelings....Keep in mind that asking questions and encouraging activities can be useful for some children, but it is not always necessary and is never a substitute for simply listening.
