Book Hunting Lieutenant Chadbourne

Download or read book Hunting Lieutenant Chadbourne written by Jim W. Corder and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 9, 1846, Second Lieutenant Theodore Lincoln Chadbourne, United States Army, fell in the battle of Resaca de la Palma during the war with Mexico. Dead at twenty-three in a remote desert, his promise outweighing his accomplishments, Chadbourne slid into obscurity. But his lapse was not immediate, nor was it complete; clues to Chadbourne lay scattered about the historical landscape. Hunting Lieutenant Chadbourne is Jim W. Corder's account of his obsessive search for information about this soldier, whose name he first read on a historical marker beside a highway in Texas. A thoughtful meditation on the connectedness of history and the possibilities of recovering and understanding the past, the book reveals as much about Corder's literary and historiographical preoccupations as it does about the life of his subject. Rather than order his material into a linear, chronological narrative, Corder presents it in much the same sequence and form as it came to him. The effect is to dramatize the historical process and allow the very details that Corder collects to reveal Chadbourne to the reader. Who was Chadbourne, and can we ever really know? If Corder has any answers, they lie in his subtext of uncertainty.

Book Lost Mines and Buried Treasures of the West

Download or read book Lost Mines and Buried Treasures of the West written by Thomas Probert and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This large, easy-to-use volume lists the works of more than eleven hundred different authors, covering thousands of stories of lost mines and buried treasures supposedly located in fifteen Western and Southwestern states and in Mexico. In addition to being a boon to those adventurers who are tempted to search for lost mines and buried treasures, it will be an important basic research tool for historians, geologists, geographers, anthropologists, archaeologists, and folklorists, and it will be useful in identifying the man treasure hoards and mining claims all the way from the Lost Adams Diggings in Arizona to the Stagecoach in Wyoming. The information given in this important bibliography was acquired through perusal of an unusually large number of books, newspapers, magazines, unpublished manuscripts, deposits in private and public libraries, holdings of various historical foundations, and governmental records and archives. The task took Mr. Probert three full years of steady, patient work. Many of these stories of lost mines and buried treasures have resulted in the discovery of some that are rarely acknowledged, largely because, as Mr. Probert points out, "those who have been so fortunate as to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow have deemed it wiser and much safer to keep their own counsel" -- Book jacket.

Book Frontier Forts and Outposts of New Mexico

Download or read book Frontier Forts and Outposts of New Mexico written by Donna Blake Birchell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in early New Mexico was often perilous. Geographic isolation attracted outlaws and ruffians, and skirmishes often arose between the indigenous tribes and settlers. In response, the U.S. government set up military forts and outposts to protect its new citizens. These strongholds include Fort Craig, where logs were made to look like cannons to fool Confederate troops. Kit Carson, John Pershing and Billy the Kid all called Fort Stanton home, before it became the first federal tuberculosis sanatorium and later a detention center for German prisoners of war. Author Donna Blake Birchell relates little-known yet highly important Civil War battles, the tragedies of the Navajo and Mescalero Apache internments and other dramatic frontier stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Niven was British Columbia’s first professional man of letters and the first significant literary figure of the Kootenays. He lived by his wits, as an independent writer, mainly on the outskirts of Nelson, from 1920 until 1944. Although some of his more than 40 titles were written to keep the wolf from the door, such as Cinderella of Skookum Creek (1916), by contrast, Niven’s collection of 16 short stories called Above Your Heads (1911) consisted exclusively of stories rejected by editors who believed their content would be “over the heads” of readers. "The Treasure Trail" is a story of Canadian prospectors originally published in 1923.
