Book excerpt: The story of Bob Jones University, besides being a detailed account of one of the most unique experiments in the history of education, is also the story of Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., the University's founder and first president, whose life of unselfish and untiring dedication is intimately linked with this institution of higher learning; and that of his son, Dr. Bob Jones, Jr., whose many-sided talents and interests qualified him as no one else to become his father's successor as president. The purpose of this book is, first of all, to acquaint those readers who are not yet familiar with the World's Most Unusual University with its early history, its steady progress, its present-day dimensions and achievements, and, above all, its philosophy of life and its high goal of providing a solid, thorough, Christian education for young men and women who desire to occupy their place and carry out their task in life responsibly. But since the University's education so distinctly reflects the sound principles and convictions of both Drs. Jones, it is inevitable that a good deal of information is given about these remarkable personalities who have spared no efforts to expand the Church of Christ by means of their extensive educational program. - Jacket flap.

Book The Crusade in the Fifteenth Century

Download or read book The Crusade in the Fifteenth Century written by Norman Housley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, historians acknowledge the significance of crusading activity in the fifteenth century, and they have started to explore the different ways in which it shaped contemporary European society. Just as important, however, was the range of interactions which took place between the three faith communities which were most affected by crusade, namely the Catholic and Orthodox worlds, and the adherents of Islam. Discussion of these interactions forms the theme of this book. Two essays consider the impact of the fall of Constantinople in 1453 on the conquering Ottomans and the conquered Byzantines. The next group of essays reviews different aspects of the crusading response to the Turks, ranging from Emperor Sigismund to Papal legates. The third set of contributions considers diplomatic and cultural interactions between Islam and Christianity, including attempts made to forge alliances of Christian and Muslim powers against the Ottomans. Last, a set of essays looks at what was arguably the most complex region of all for inter-faith relations, the Balkans, exploring the influence of crusading ideas in the eastern Adriatic, Bosnia and Romania. Viewed overall, this collection of essays makes a powerful contribution to breaking down the old and discredited view of monolithic and mutually exclusive "fortresses of faith". Nobody would question the extent and intensity of religious violence in fifteenth-century Europe, but this volume demonstrates that it was played out within a setting of turbulent diversity. Religious and ethnic identities were volatile, allegiances negotiable, and diplomacy, ideological exchange and human contact were constantly in operation between the period's major religious groupings.

Book Fortress Europe Or a Europe of Fortresses

Download or read book Fortress Europe Or a Europe of Fortresses written by Harlan Koff and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of non-EU migrants is one of the most salient issues in contemporary European politics and social scientists have dedicated significant attention to this question. Even though this field is generally characterized by its richness, its weakness has been its focus on specific aspects of immigration, such as political participation, immigrant entrepreneurship, models of citizenship, etc. This book addresses migrant integration in its complexity. First, it compares and analyzes local integration regimes because levels and modes of integration vary throughout Europe, all the way to the sub-national level. Second, the book discusses integration issues in various arenas, including political party systems, welfare regimes, social movements, civil society, economic sectors, housing, urban planning, and crime. In doing so, the study addresses the relationships between integration in various spheres, thus embracing the complexity of integration processes. Finally, the book attempts to explain the links between political, economic and social integration through interdisciplinary analysis based on power, class and status.

Book Fighting for the Faith

  • Author : David Nicolle
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2007-09-20
  • ISBN : 1781594562

Download or read book Fighting for the Faith written by David Nicolle and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fighting between Christians and Muslims in the medieval period is often seen in the narrow context of the battle for the Holy Land. Other points of conflict tend to be ignored. But, as David Nicolle's thought-provoking survey shows, the religions clashed across the medieval world - in the Mediterranean and the Iberian peninsula, in the Near East, in Central Asia, India, the Balkans, Anatolia, Russia, the Baltic and Africa. Over 500 years, the struggle in each theatre of conflict had its own character - methods of warfare differed and developed in different ways and were influenced by local traditions and circumstances. And these campaigns were not waged solely against Christian or Islamic enemies, but against pagan, non-Christian or non-Islamic peoples. As he tells the story of Crusade and Jihad, and describes the organization and tactics of the armies involved, David Nicolle opens up a new understanding of the phenomenon of holy war.
