Book Fortran 8x Explained

Download or read book Fortran 8x Explained written by Michael Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The undoubted success of Fortran as the predominant programming language in the field of scientific and numerical computing is due in part to the steady evolution of the language. Following the publication of the first two standards in 1966 and 1978, the technical committee responsible for their development, X3J3, has been working for a decade on a new standard suitable for use in the 1990s. This new standard, at present still in draft form, will contain the new features required for large-scale computing on modern supercomputers, but still retain all of the familiar features which have made the language so popular. A first draft of the standard was subject to periods of public comment both in the USA and internationally. As a result, a new draft of the standard has been prepared. This book is a description of this new language, for the moment called Fortran 8x. It is intended to provide potential users of the language with a comprehensive guide to all its features, so that they can prepare for its introduction. The authors are both members of X3J3 and have many years of experience in the use of Fortran. The book is intended for existing Fortran users and for all those involved in any aspect of scientific and numerical computing.

  • Author : Michael Metcalf

Download or read book Modern Fortran Explained written by Michael Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortran marches on, remaining one of the principal programming languages used in high-performance scientific, numerical, and engineering computing. A series of significant revisions to the standard versions of the language have progressively enhanced its capabilities, and the latest standard - Fortran 2018 - includes many additions and improvements. This edition of Modern Fortran Explained expands on the last. Given the release of updated versions of Fortran compilers, the separate descriptions of Fortran 2003 and Fortran 2008 have been incorporated into the main text, which thereby becomes a unified description of the full Fortran 2008 version of the language. This clearer standard has allowed many deficiencies and irregularities in the earlier language versions to be resolved. Four new chapters describe the additional features of Fortran 2018, with its enhancements to coarrays for parallel programming, interoperability with C, IEEE arithmetic, and various other improvements. Written by leading experts in the field, two of whom have actively contributed to Fortran 2018, this is a complete and authoritative description of Fortran in its latest form. It is intended for new and existing users of the language, and for all those involved in scientific and numerical computing. It is suitable as a textbook for teaching and, with its index, as a handy reference for practitioners.

Book Parallel Computers 2

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, parallel computing technology has gained considerable momentum. A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques, offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer, a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture, Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. The book contains specific information on the various types of machines available, details of computer architecture and technologies, and descriptions of programming languages and algorithms. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level, this handbook is also useful for research workers, machine designers, and programmers concerned with parallel computers. In addition, it will serve as a guide for potential parallel computer users, especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used.

Book A Guidebook to Fortran on Supercomputers

Download or read book A Guidebook to Fortran on Supercomputers written by John M. Levesque and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guidebook to Fortran on Supercomputers presents in detail both the underlying architecture of supercomputers and the manner by which a compiler maps Fortran code onto that architecture. This book outlines the constructs preventing full optimization and provides specific strategies for restructuring a program. Organized into four chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic concepts of vector, scalar, and parallel processing. This text then provides an in-depth look at the architectural features of a variety of existing machines, with emphasis to the features common to many of them. Other chapters consider the optimization techniques used by compilers and how a programmer can take advantage of this knowledge in restructuring existing programs and in the development of new applications. The final chapter presents examples of loops from real-world programs, with a discussion of the inherent problems. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, engineers, students, and research workers.

Book Modern Fortran Explained

Download or read book Modern Fortran Explained written by Michael Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortran remains one of the principal programming languages used in high-performance scientific, numerical, and engineering computing. A series of significant revisions to the standard versions of the language have progressively enhanced its capabilities, and the current standard - Fortran 2023 - brings with it further additions and improvements. The language as defined by its most recent standards, with their introduction of object-oriented programming and of coarrays, is often referred to generically as 'Modern Fortran', and this term is increasingly used in the literature. Thus, we see that Fortran's particular advantages as a high-end numerical language, especially where arrays are the main form of data object and/or where complex arithmetic is involved, are still to the fore. It is able to attain the highest achievable optimization, mainly because multi-dimensional arrays are 'natural' objects and because its pointers are highly constrained. There is every sign that Modern Fortran will continue to be used to tackle major scientific computing problems in the next decade and beyond and will long remain a living tribute to its early pioneers. This third edition of Modern Fortran Explained expands on the second. The material contained in the four final chapters of the second edition have been merged into the main text, thereby offering, in 20 chapters, a comprehensive and uniform description of Fortran 2018. The additional features now brought by the 2023 standard, which are mostly relatively minor in nature, are described in two final chapters, the first on generic programming and the second on the other features. This structure enables the reader to distinguish clearly between what is old and what is new. This new edition, written by experts in the field, three of whom have actively contributed to Fortran 2023, is thus a complete and authoritative description of Fortran in its latest form, with the intention that it remain the main reference work in the field.

Book The F Programming Language

Download or read book The F Programming Language written by Michael Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The F programming language is a dramatic new development in scientific programming. Building on the well-established strengths of the Fortran family of languages, it is carefully crafted to be both safe and regular, whilst retaining the enormously powerful numerical capabilities of its parentlanguage, Fortran 90, as well as its data abstraction capability. Thus, an array language becomes available as part of a medium-size, widely-available language for the first time. In this respect, the language is clearly superior to older ones such as Pascal, C, and Basic. The book begins with anintroductory chapter, then describes, in turn, the features of the language: language elements, expressions and assignments, control constructs, program units and procedures, array features, intrinsic procedures, and the input/output facilities. It is completed by six appendices, including thedifference between F and Fortran 90, and solutions to most of the exercises. In the absence of a formal standard for F, this book is the defining document for the language, setting out the complete syntax and semantics of the language in a readable but thorough way. It is essential reading forusers of F.
