Book excerpt: Founded in 1853, Fort Riley was established to protect merchants and settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails. Fort Riley kept the peace during the Civil War and in 1893, a cavalry school began operation there. Fort Riley continued to train mounted troops during the Golden Age of Cavalry after World War I, but also served as a training site for more than 150,000 troops during the first and second World Wars. This collection of vintage images commemorating the sesquicentennial of Fort Riley is a colorful, patriotic reminder of the military post that has served the nation continuously since its founding 150 years ago.

Book Fort Riley and Its Neighbors

Download or read book Fort Riley and Its Neighbors written by William A. Dobak and published by . This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fort Riley and Its Neighbors is a story of soldiers trying to save money and civilians trying to make it. Fort Riley stands today overlooking the Kansas River because army quartermasters in the 1850s thought that small steamboats could deliver supplies cheaply there. Civilians came to help build the fort and stayed to bid on the quartermaster's contracts for feed and fuel. Army posts were often a magnet for settlers. Contracts for supplies and transportation brought hard-to-find cash to small western towns, replacing systems of barter and credit and integrating them into the national economy. Townspeople kept a covetous eye on Fort Riley's land and its resources, and they voted bond issues to build short-line railroads in order to get competitive freight rates from trans-continental carriers. These short lines put Fort Riley at the center of the nation's transportation system, assuring the fort's survival for the next century. The history of Fort Riley and its neighbors typifies the relations that evolved between the American people and their government throughout the American West. The settlers' approach to federal authority, at once supplicating and conniving, has persisted and thrived and become the national attitude. This book won first place in the Dr. Edward Tihen Historical Research and Publication competition, November 5, 1999. This award is presented by the Kansas State Historical Society for Kansas books written by first-time authors.

Book Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills

Download or read book Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills written by John McPherson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who have been accustomed to reading books on wilderness skills that entertain but fall short of actually teaching you "how to" accomplish the tasks and skills at hand, this book is a pleasant surprise - written for those who wish to actually head into the wilderness and practice the skills of our ancestors. Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills is a compilation of ten booklets written over the course of seven years each chapter a complete, concise "how-to" in itself. Unlike many who have written on this subject in the past, John and Geri McPherson have spent years daily practicing these skills, perfecting methods through trial and error - and documenting it. This vast knowledge is passed on to the reader. Illustrated with over 700 photographs crammed into 400 pages, this massive work is not a rehashing and perpetuation of myths. These are tried and true methods of primitive wilderness living and survival skills. Field and Stream says: "The McPherson's book....deals with taking flat nothing into boondocks and staying for a long period of time. If you'd like to know how to make a spear thrower, or pottery, or brain cure deer hides, or build a permanent shelter from what you find at and, here is the place to learn." And Sports Afield: "....Full of practical, tested advice for living off the land." Also the Museum of the Fur Trade: "This is without doubt the best raining guide for eral primitive living skills" Web Site www/prairiewolf.net;email: john/[email protected] or [email protected].
