Book World War II in Fort Pierce

Download or read book World War II in Fort Pierce written by Robert A. Taylor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999-07-27 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Florida communities felt the impact of World War II as much as the Atlantic-coast town of Fort Pierce. With a population that soared along with its economy, the small city made an important contribution to Allied victory by hosting a major military training base. Prior to that, the war had come only as close as the German submarines stalking targets off the southern coast of the peninsula. In 1943, however, the U.S. Navy commissioned its newest amphibious training base in Fort Pierce, and tens of thousands of young men would eventually prepare for combat on the towns sunny shores. The intensive physical and mental training was hardly a day at the beach, and within a few months, Fort Pierce had become a major military post with a national reputation. It also became the training site of some of the most elite units of the armed forces, including the Scouts and Raiders, U.S. Army Rangers, and the legendary frogmen.

Book Historical Shoreline Change Analysis

Download or read book Historical Shoreline Change Analysis written by Mark Richard Byrnes and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Repetitive surveys of historical shoreline position are recognized as a primary data source for quantifying rates of erosion and accretion. Coastal scientists, engineers, and planners often use this information for estimating the magnitude and direction of sediment transport, monitoring engineering modifications to a beach, examining geomorphic variations 'in the coastal zone, establishing coastal erosion setback lines, and verifying shoreline change numerical models. For this study, shoreline position data for seven (7) time periods were used to quantify shoreline response to incident coastal processes and engineering activities for the east coast of Florida from Indian Harbour Beach to Fort Pierce Inlet (Figure 1). Because mapping shoreline position has employed a variety of techniques since the mid-1800s (topographic surveys, aerial photographic interpretation, GPS-controlled surveys), it is necessary to determine the characteristics of the position being monitored for quantifying change. Shalowitz (1964) discusses the line being monitored, as documented in instructions to US Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS; now called the National Ocean Service (NOSI) topographic field parties, and states that the high-water shoreline is "determined from the physical appearance of the beach" rather than a position associated with a precise vertical tidal datum. He further states, "What the topographer actually delineated are the markings left on the beach by the preceding high water." From this expianation, it is clear the operative definition for high-water line or shoreline for early topographic surveys is the horizontal position associated with wave runup at high tide (Anders and Byrnes 1991). This shoreline generally is associated with features on the beach such as a dune scarp or the base of a bluff, berm crest, debris line, or tonal difference between wet and dry beach, below which the foreshore is smooth (most of these features can be identified on aerial photography as well, particularly with stereo pairs). A computer-based shoreline mapping strategy was used to compile and analyze changes in historical shoreline position for the period 1878/83 to 2000 for the east Florida coast from Indian Harbour Beach to Fort Pierce Inlet (Table 1). The purpose of this study is to quantify changes in shoreline position using the most accurate data sources and compilation procedures to characterize areas of erosion and accretion as influenced by human modifications and natural processes. Because this information is critical relative to alleged claims, emphasis was placed on data accuracy and potential error estimates for gaging the significance of results."--Page 1.
