Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of people all around the world, especially in industrialized nations, continue to be changed by the presence and growth of the Internet. Its in?uence is felt at scales ranging from private lifestyles to national economies, boosting thepaceatwhichmoderninformationandcommunicationtechnologiesin?uence personal choices along with business processes and scienti?c endeavors. In addition to its billions of HTML pages, the Web can now be seen as an open repository of computing resources. These resources provide access to computational services as well as data repositories, through a rapidly growing variety of Web applications and Web services. However, people’s usage of all these resources barely scratches the surface of the possibilities that such richness should o?er. One simple reason is that, given the variety of information available and the rate at which it is being extended, it is di?cult to keep up with the range of resources relevant to one’s interests. Another reason is that resources are o?ered in a bewildering variety of formats and styles, so that many resources e?ectively stand in isolation. This is reminiscent of the challenge of enterprise application integration, - miliar to every large organization be it in commerce, academia or government. Thechallengearisesbecauseoftheaccumulationofinformationandcommuni- tion systems over decades, typically without the technical provision or political will to make them work together. Thus the exchange of data among those s- tems is di?cult and expensive, and the potential synergetic e?ects of combining them are never realized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TheSilverMarketPhenomenon In the developed countries, the dominant factor in the next society will be something to which most people are only beginning to pay attention: the rapid growth in the older po- lation and the rapid shrinking of the younger generation. Peter F. Drucker The current shift in demographics – aging and shrinking populations – in many countries around the world presents a major challenge to companies and societies alike. As a matter of fact, this is true both for a number of industrialized nations as well as for certain emergingeconomies. However, even thoughthis crucial issue has recently started to attract the attention of scholars, business leaders, and politicians, research on the implications of the demographic change on businesses is still in its infancy. Most accounts of the so-called demographic “problem” deal, as the term already suggests, with the challenges and threats of the demographic development. These discussions feature, for example, the shrinking workforce, welfare effects, social con?icts, etc. At the same time, chances and opportunities are often neglected. The emergence of new markets, the potential for innovations, the integration of older people into jobs and work places, the joy of active aging, and their varied roles withinsociety arejust a fewexamplesofhowwhat at ?rst sight appearsto bea crisis could be turned into an opportunity. All in all, countries and industries are reacting very differently – from still neglecting to proactively looking for and developing solutions.

Book Holding the Shop Together

Download or read book Holding the Shop Together written by Stephen J. Silvia and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the onset of the Great Recession, Germany’s economy has been praised for its superior performance, which has been reminiscent of the "economic miracle" of the 1950s and 1960s. Such acclaim is surprising because Germany’s economic institutions were widely dismissed as faulty just a decade ago. In Holding the Shop Together, Stephen J. Silvia examines the oscillations of the German economy across the entire postwar period through one of its most important components: the industrial relations system. As Silvia shows in this wide-ranging and deeply informed account, the industrial relations system is strongest where the German economy is strongest and is responsible for many of the distinctive features of postwar German capitalism. It extends into the boardrooms, workplaces and government to a degree that is unimaginable in most other countries. Trends in German industrial relations, moreover, influence developments in the broader German economy and, frequently, industrial relations practice abroad. All these aspects make the German industrial relations regime an ideal focal point for developing a deeper understanding of the German economy as a whole.Silvia begins by presenting the framework of the German industrial relations system—labor laws and the role of the state—and then analyzes its principal actors: trade unions and employers’ associations. He finds the framework sound but the actors in crisis because of membership losses. Silvia analyzes the reasons behind the losses and the innovative strategies German labor and management have developed in their efforts to reverse them. He concludes with a comprehensive picture and then considers the future of German industrial relations.

Book Urban Water Systems Floods

Download or read book Urban Water Systems Floods written by D. Proverbs and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Water III is the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on the Design, Construction, Maintenance, Monitoring and Control of Urban Water Systems. The conference reconvened following its success in 2012 and in 2014, when it was held in the Algarve, Portugal. These proceedings deal with two main subjects: water supply systems and urban drainage. Water distribution networks often suffer substantial losses which indicate energy and treatment waste. Sewer systems are under relentless pressure due to urbanisation and climate change, and the environmental impact caused by urban drainage overflows is related to both water quantity and water quality. Most architects and town planners are aware of the importance of the interaction between urban water cycles and city planning and landscaping. Specialised computer tools are needed to manage all of these aspects and are required to respond to the increased complexity of urban water systems. Topics such as contamination and pollution discharges in urban water bodies, as well as the monitoring of water recycling systems are currently receiving a great deal of attention from researchers and professional engineers working in the water industry. Other related topics include: Leakage and losses; Modelling and experimentation; Safety and security of water systems; Maintenance and repairs; Surface water and groundwater sources; Reservoirs; Network design; Waste water treatment and disposal; Combined sewer networks; Flood control; Storage tanks; Environmental impact; Domestic and industrial waste water issues. In addition to the above, the conference discusses legal and regulatory aspects, along with more technical problems.

Ice caves have become an increasingly important target for the scientific community in the past decade, as the paleoclimatic information they host offers invaluable information about both present-day and past climate conditions. Ice caves are caves that host perennial ice accumulations and are the least studied members of the cryosphere. They occur in places where peculiar cave morphology and climatic conditions combine to allow for ice to form and persist in otherwise adverse parts of the planet. The book is an informative reference for scientists interested in ice cave studies, climate scientists, geographers, glaciologists, microbiologists, and permafrost and karst scientists. - Covers various aspects of ice occurrence in caves, including cave climate, ice genesis and dynamics, and cave fauna - Features an overview of the paleoclimatic significance of ice caves - Includes over 100 color images of ice caves around the world

Book 2050

    Book Details:
  • Author : José Luis Valverde
  • Publisher : IOS Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9781586037147
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book 2050 written by José Luis Valverde and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph brings together a number of important papers dealing with the medical, societal and demographic ramifications of fertility and is a very valuable contribution to the European debate on fertility. The very low fertility levels in several EU Member States are a matter of public concern. An increase in fertility will not by itself stop demographic ageing but can contribute to decelerating current demographic trends. It is therefore essential to understand better the reasons behind Europe's low fertility rates. The difficulty of reconciling private life with a professional career far too often compel women to postpone having a family or to have fewer children than they would desire. It follows that more and more couples reach an age where fertility problems become prevalent. Involuntary infertility is a serious medical condition with strong negative consequences on the wellbeing of the couples concerned and has a negative impact on demographic trends.
