Book Principles of Industrial Organization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Industrial Organization Classic Reprint written by Dexter S. Kimball and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Industrial Organization As industrial enterprises have grown in magnitude, as processes have become more refined and competition more keen the problems of organization have steadily grown m importance. Just as the tools and processes of our forefathers became inadequate as enterprises grew in magnitude so the simple administrative methods formerly m use have long since been outgrown by modem plants. Aside, however, from these reasons there are other factors affecting organization, which, while of little importance in former times, promise to be of great importance in the organizations of the future. The ideals that man has held before him in his toilsome journey from savagery to civilization have varied with changing time and place. Among many of the older nations war was the central thought, the country was an armed camp and predatory methods were an approved means of national support. In other cases some form of religion was the predominating influence, and the social and industrial organization was modelled accordingly. In a few of the older civilizations industry was held in high esteem; but for the most part it was considered menial to labor and industry was adjudged by standards that now seem strange indeed. But as the humanistic side of civilization has made progress we have attained higher ideals regarding industry. Never before in the history' of mankind has it been so universally acknowledged that physical, mental and moral well-being rest upon and are solely supported by labor. Industry is the business of the civilized world, and the greater part of our problems, national, state and home, center around the great industrial questions. Furthermore, industry is being looked upon more and more, not as an incidental matter, nor merely as a means of securing personal profits, but as the great basic feature of our civilization on which must rest our entire well-being. And with this new evaluation of industry has come new and higher ideals regarding service to humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Organization in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries Setting out with the detailed examination of the records of a single London company, I was gradually led to include within the scope of my inquiry, first, the other industrial companies of London, then the, similar organizations in other English centres of industry, and finally the parallel development in continental cities, and especially at Paris. In this way I came to entertain the idea of doing some thing, however tentative, to bridge over the gap which appeared to exist in industrial history between mediaeval England and the England of the eighteenth century. Book Logics of Hierarchy

Download or read book Logics of Hierarchy written by Alexander Cooley and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political science has had trouble generating models that unify the study of the formation and consolidation of various types of states and empires. The business-administration literature, however, has long experience in observing organizations. According to a dominant model in this field, business firms generally take one of two forms: unitary (U) or multidivisional (M). The U-form organizes its various elements along the lines of administrative functions, whereas the M-form governs its periphery according to geography and territory. In Logics of Hierarchy, Alexander Cooley applies this model to political hierarchies across different cultures, geographical settings, and historical eras to explain a variety of seemingly disparate processes: state formation, imperial governance, and territorial occupation. Cooley illustrates the power of this formal distinction with detailed accounts of the experiences of Central Asian republics in the Soviet and post-Soviet eras, and compares them to developments in the former Yugoslavia, the governance of modern European empires, Korea during and after Japanese occupation, and the recent U.S. occupation of Iraq. In applying this model, Logics of Hierarchy reveals the varying organizational ability of powerful states to promote institutional transformation in their political peripheries and the consequences of these formations in determining pathways of postimperial extrication and state-building. Its focus on the common organizational problems of hierarchical polities challenges much of the received wisdom about imperialism and postimperialism.

The emphasis, however, is on the role of various quantitative approaches. What types of analysis are most useful in research? In what ways can the findings of any research he used? Part II provides a number of examples of business history writing that demonstrate the results of a quantitative approach using both Primary and secondary source material. Some of the papers concentrate on the growth and performance of firms from various sectors of the economy. Some consider features of industrial structure. This well established book maintains the high standard of information found in the previous two editions, describing the physical results of some 5000 years of urban activity. It explains and develops the concept of 'unplanned' cities that grow organically, in contrast with 'planned' cities that were shaped in response to urban form determinants. Book Industrial Organization

Download or read book Industrial Organization written by Joan Woodward and published by Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Organization: Theory and Practice has rightly been described as a "classic" in the history of organizational theory. First published in 1965 it was a major contribution to the development of contingency theory and our understanding of the relationship between technology and organizations. The book stood in marked contrast to the traditions of scientific management. Combining detailed empirical research and a pioneering analytical framework it suggested that technology and production systems played a crucial role in shaping effective organizational structures. In doing so Joan Woodward offered lasting insights into issues of levels of hierarchy and spans of management control - issues that today might be discussed in terms of "delayering" and "process re-engineering".Woodward's work was a springboard for much subsequent research and many of her specific observations have been widely debated and challenged. Yet, as Sandra Dawson and Dorothy Wedderburn write in their Introduction, "the main thesis of the book is well known...however, this is a book where to know its main thesis is no substitute for reading the book itself. Joan Woodward's ideas remain one of the cornerstones of our knowledge of our organizations."

Book Handbook of Longitudinal Research Methods in Organisation and Business Studies

Download or read book Handbook of Longitudinal Research Methods in Organisation and Business Studies written by Melanie E. Hassett and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is a very timely contribution to organization and business studies. Most calls for longitudinal research are made in sections of published work that deal with limitations of the study or suggestions for further research. This book places longitudinal research methods at center stage. With its practical, hands-on approach it guides us how to design a longitudinal study in and around organizations whether qualitative or quantitative and how to implement it. I warmly recommend this Handbook to ambitious senior and junior researchers. It makes the commonly presented excuses for not undertaking longitudinal research completely redundant. Rebecca Piekkari, Aalto University, School of Business in Helsinki, Finland This is a very timely book that fills an important gap in the field of research methods. So far very little attention has been paid to longitudinal research methods, while the usefulness of this type of research has often been discussed in many papers and conferences. Insights provided by scholars who have been doing this type of research provide useful guidelines for anyone interested in research methods from senior scholars to young researchers and PhD candidates. This volume will serve as an excellent complement to the existing range of books on research methods. Pervez Ghauri, Kings College London, UK This innovative Handbook demonstrates that there is no single best approach to conducting longitudinal studies. At their best, longitudinal research designs yield rich, contextualised, multilevel and deep understanding of the studied phenomenon. The lack of resources in terms of time, funding and people can pose a serious challenge to conducting longitudinal research. This book tackles many of these challenges and discusses the role of longitudinal research programmes in overcoming such obstacles. This book shows how longitudinal research methods enable the understanding of dynamics, mechanisms, causalities and interrelationships of organizational and business concepts in context and in relation to time. It discusses the richness and versatility of longitudinal research and offers, to students and experienced scholars alike, numerous viewpoints, reflections and personal accounts about conducting longitudinal research, from planning and fieldwork to reporting and managing of research projects.
