Book excerpt: Formless-form IV explores the aesthetic and spiritual geography of the hand-written word. Just as a geographer studies the features of the Earth and the impact of human activity on the physical landscape, the Art of Sho requires an appreciation of the visual topography-line, space, and time (rhythm)-that emerges while the brush moves across the writing surface, and more importantly the underlying spiritual contours that guides the sho artist. The pliant brush replete with ink creates vigorous, quiet, warm, hard, immovable, and even mischievous forms (line) and space. In addition to communicating ideas, feelings, and aspirations, the hand-written word is a vehicle through which the sho-artist discovers, nurtures, and gives form to his or her formless spiritual landscape. Free flowing ink and permeable paper are ideal for chronicling moments in a sho-artist's pilgrimage of self-discipline, self-surrender, and self-exploration. The forms that appear from the brush give form or "color" to a formless and a-sensual aesthetic-spiritual geography. Transcending formal aesthetic values, formless-forms have the capacity to embrace and draw the viewer into a rarefied world.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume challenge the concept of form and aim to set out, explore and develop different theories and examples of 'the formless'. In so doing, they raise questions of form, and notions of formlessness (as distinct from something called 'the formless'). The starting point for many of the contributors is Georges Bataille's highly influential article entitled 'informe' ('formless'). Here, in a context where art, philosophy and anthropology were merging, Bataille tried to question the idea of formlessness as simply applying to things without form. This book, through a diversity of articles in various domains, asks how and why 'the formless' is such a dominant idea from the nineteenth century onwards and it asks the question: 'what is formless?'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current religion and science dialogue begs for greater clarity on the relation of God to nature. In God and Nature two scholars who embrace contemporary insights from science and religion explore the complexities of this debate. As the narrative unfolds, classical and contemporary thinkers are engaged as discussion partners in articulating a philosophical theology of nature. Conceptual pairs, in which two concepts play off of each other, provide the structure for each of the seven chapters, with usually the first concept being more scientific in character and the second more religious in tone. These pairs of concepts-from chronology and creation to creativity and creator-help to thematize and structure the progressing narrative. Within each chapter the two concepts are first investigated independently, then interdependently, and finally in relation to the divine. At the story's completion nature has emerged as alive with possibility that is as alluring as the actuality it evokes. Envisioned is a divine Creator who works in and through the possibility of creation to lure it into fuller manifestations via creative transformation.

In his monumental Treasury of Knowledge, Jamgön Kongtrül presents a complete account of the major lines of thought and practice that comprise Tibetan Buddhism. This first book of The Treasury which serves as a prelude to Kongtrul's survey describes four major cosmological systems found in the Tibetan tradition—those associated with the Hinayana, Mahayana, Kalachakra, and Dzogchen teachings. Each of these cosmologies shows how the world arises from mind, whether through the accumulated results of past actions or from the constant striving of awareness to know itself.

Book Blake The Complete Poems

Download or read book Blake The Complete Poems written by W.H. Stevenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Blake (1757 - 1827) is one of the great figures in literature, by turns poet, artist and visonary. Profoundly libertarian in outlook, Blake's engagement with the issues of his day is well known and this - along with his own idiosynratic concerns - flows through his poetry and art. Like Milton before him, the prodigality of his allusions and references is little short of astonishing. Consquently, his longer viosnary poems can challege the modern reader, who will find in this avowedly open edition all they might need to interpret the poetry. W. H. Stevenson's Blake is a masterpiece of scrupulous scholarship. It is, as the editor makes clear in his introduction, 'designed to be widely, and fluently, read' and this Third Edition incorporates many changes to further that aim. Many of the headnotes have been rewritten and the footnotes updated. The full texts of the early prose tracts, All Religions are One and There is no Natural Religion, are included for the first time. In many instances, Blake's capitalisation has been restored, better to convey the expressive individuality of his writing. In addition, a full colour plate section contains a representation of Blake's most significant paintings and designs. As the 250th anniversary of his birth approaches, Blake has perhaps more readers than ever before; Blake: The Complete Poems will stand those readers, new and old, in good stead for many years to come.
