Book Nitrogen Oxide Formation from Chemically bound Nitrogen During the Combustion of Fossil Fuels Extended Zeldovich Reactions

Download or read book Nitrogen Oxide Formation from Chemically bound Nitrogen During the Combustion of Fossil Fuels Extended Zeldovich Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the many problems associated with the firing of fossil fuels is the impact on the ambient levels of nitrogen oxides. Since the use of coals, oils and coal-derived fuels is expected to triple by 1985, it is urgent that the formation of nitrogen oxides from molecular nitrogen and organo-nitrogen species be fully characterized so that emission abatement strategies can be formulated. The thermal fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and the free radical reactions of nitrogenous species are the sources of NO3 The fixation reactions can be described by the extended Zeldovich mechanism, and techniques such as staged combustion and flue gas recirculation have been employed to reduce combustion temperatures and, hence, thermally formed NO. These techniques have had little effect, however, on the conversion of chemically-bound nitrogen to NO3 The fate of chemically-bound nitrogen depends upon such factors as the nitrogen content of the fuel and the equivalence ratio and upon the physical processes governing combustion. Research is proposed to establish the kinetic processes involved in the conversion of fuel nitrogen to NO and N2 in environments characteristic of fossil fuel combustion and to identify those conditions which favor the reduction of NO to N2.

Book Homogeneous Production and Removal of NO3 from Combustion Exhaust Flows First Quarterly Technical Summary Report

Download or read book Homogeneous Production and Removal of NO3 from Combustion Exhaust Flows First Quarterly Technical Summary Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production and removal of Nox and other combustion products during fossil fuel combustion is a serious environmental problem for both stationary and mobile energy systems. Since stationary systems are faced with increased utilization of coal, oil shale, or synthetic fuel oils, all of which have significant levels of fuel-bound nitrogen, NOx formation may become acute. Recent studies of the production of NOx due to oxidation of fuel nitrogen indicate that a critical role is played by the interaction of NH/sub i/ (i = 1,2,3) species with NO, O2, OH, and H. In fact, these reactions play a vital role in the homogeneous removal of NOx from combustion exhaust streams upon addition of NH3 or NH3-like compounds. Over the past two years, there has been an increased understanding of the chemistry of the NH/sub i//NOx system at combustor exhaust temperatures. For an ammonia addition system to be effective in reducing NO/sub x/ emissions, it must work successfully in the presence of a variety of sulfur-bearing compounds present in the products of combusted coal and oil shale. The work in progress has three major objectives. The first objective is to determine whether the reactions of SO2 (the predominant sulfur-bearing compound present) + NH/sub i/ (i = 1,2,3) directly produce NO/sub x/ in the temperature range of 300 to 1500 K. Depending on the products and value of these rate constants, the effectiveness of NO removal by NH3 could be dramatically affected. The second objective is to screen and evaluate various sulfur-containing scavenger precursors such as SO, SO2, HS, and H2S to assess their impact on the NH/sub i//NO/sub x/ chemical system.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade the topic of emissions reduction and control has remained an important area of research due to the enforcement of various Government policies in an attempt to minimize the impact on the environment. One area in which a great deal of research has been conducted to address this policy is NOx/SOx suppression. However, despite the progress that has been made over this time period, further research into the most effective method of reducing NOx/SOx emissions is still urgently required. In developed countries, a more stringent requirement in the level of emissions (such as is NOx/SOx component of less than 10ppm) will be enforced in the near future. Developing countries will also need a new technology that is effective and that is suited to each countries needs. Additional research and development efforts are thus necessary to meet such requirements. This compendium contains a collection of key papers themed around NOx/SOx emissions from combustion of hydrocarbon resources and the attempts to secure an efficient and effective method for reducing these emissions. These key papers are taken from the journals Fuel, Fuel Processing Technology and Progress in Energy and Combustion Science.

Book Formation and Control of Fuel nitrogen Pollutants in Catalytic Combustion of Coal derived Gases

Download or read book Formation and Control of Fuel nitrogen Pollutants in Catalytic Combustion of Coal derived Gases written by Frediano V. Bracco and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The review of data on NH3 and HCN concentrations in the low /medium-Btu off-gases from the Mond, Riley-Morgan, Lurgi, Koppers-Totzek, Hygas and Synthane coal gasifiers indicates that NH3 is present at concentrations of 385-11,000 ppmV and HCN at concentrations up to 300 ppmV. There is a tendency for NH3 concentration to increase as the heating value of the low /medium-Btu gas increases. The observed NH3 concentrations are consistently greater than calculated equilibrium values even when the lowest possible gasifier temperatures (at the outlet) are assumed. The fraction of coal-bound nitrogen converted to NH3 + HCN is 12 to 91 percent. A rough estimate of the amount of NH3 + HCN in raw low/medium-Btu gases can be obtained by subtracting the nitrogen in gasifier byproducts (ash, char and tar) from the amount of coal-bound nitrogen and assuming complete conversion of the difference to NH3 + HCN. The reported concentrations of NH3 and HCN in purified low/medium-Btu gases indicate that levels of 1 to 10 ppmV NH3 and 1 to 100 ppmV HCN can be reached in low temperature cleanup at the expense of sensible heat.
