Book Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture

Download or read book Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture written by Karen Clegg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on original survey data, reflective accounts, and case studies of supervisory practice in different disciplines, Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture explores the supervisor experience and demonstrates the craft, compassion and consistency required of supervisors in responding to different researcher’s needs. Based on empirical data and using the voice of research supervisors, the authors throw a spotlight on the challenges and opportunities supervisors face in supporting doctoral researchers through to successful PhD completion. This book acts as an invitation to institutions, funders, industry and academics to review what, and how they support PhD provision and to elevate the status of supervision practice. It shows how research cultures - disciplinary, institutional and individual - affect the supervisory experience and highlight the challenges that supervisors face, as well as the rewards that successful supervisory relationships bring. It is also a celebration of the contribution that doctoral researchers and all those who support research make to society. Designed to provide opportunities for sharing of practice across disciplines and the sector, Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture will be of interest to both new and experienced supervisors, to staff and researcher developers in institutions, and to funders, policy makers and senior management in universities who seek to improve and enhance the supervisory experience for all agents.

Book Doctoral education in the entrepreneurial university

Download or read book Doctoral education in the entrepreneurial university written by Eloïse Germain-Alamartine and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the issue of employability of doctorate holders through the theoretical lens of the model of the entrepreneurial university. It starts from the observation that there is a bottleneck in the academic labour market in many countries, making it increasingly difficult for recent doctoral graduates to engage in an academic career. Traditionally, doctoral education was designed for a career in academia; but the employment situations of doctorate holders call for more relevance of doctoral education and doctoral-level skills on the non-academic labour market. The main argument of this dissertation is that the openness and the interactions of the entrepreneurial university with its environment, in particular its region, makes it a relevant model to enhance the employability of doctorate holders outside academia. The thesis is based on five publications written either solely by the author or in collaboration with other scholars, mostly case studies compiling both qualitative and quantitative data and approaches. Three main findings can be highlighted from the research: (i) the entrepreneurial university increases its socioeconomic impact by building an alignment with regional stakeholders over the years and thanks to key individuals, by retaining human and social capital within itself and by broadening the scope of its activities and stakeholders; (ii) doctorate holders’ employability is key in the entrepreneurial university’s regional socioeconomic impact, as they are increasingly employed outside academia but are likely to experience job mismatches in this situation, mainly related to education and skills; (iii) regional stakeholders can take different types of initiatives to enhance the employability of doctorate holders, and increase the entrepreneurial university’s socioeconomic impact: more specifically, doctorate holders and non-academic employers can get to know each other better; intermediaries such as Science Parks can support them through the creation of meeting places. The dissertation contributes to the literature on the entrepreneurial university by focusing on the population of doctoral students and doctorate holders, at the crossroads of its three missions (education, research and ‘third mission’). It also suggests the following main recommendations: to universities, beyond adapting the content of doctoral education to the needs of non-academic employers, put emphasis on marketing it to them, so that they understand what it is worth; to doctorate holders, expand their knowledge of career possibilities, and behave entrepreneurially by initiating activities to complement what could be missing in their education; to non-academic employers, collaborate with universities and communicate their needs to them to influence the design of curricula.

Book Good Practices in Doctoral Supervision

Download or read book Good Practices in Doctoral Supervision written by Mar Reguero and published by PUBLICACIONS UNIVERSITAT ROVIRA I VIRGILI. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the European context, there are many initiatives for PhD supervisory training already in existence, but a more systematic approach to this task would be needed. In this landscape, we took the initiative of organizing an informal meeting for experts with an interest and expertise on PhD supervisory training, the Tarragona Think Tank on PhD supervisory training: challenges and good practices, hosted by University Rovira i Virgili (URV, Tarragona). This event allowed both the presentation of individual university experiences and the undertaking of a collective reflection on challenges, impact assessment and the visualisation of an ideal future for PhD supervisory training. Noting the need for more concerted efforts and practices, the present book is precisely a first tangible outcome of this concerted effort. Looking forward, we expect that this book can help setting the basis for the development of a network or alliance between the participating organisations and an ongoing effort aimed at bringing the professionalization of doctoral supervisors to the forefront in education policy at the university level. In sum, we hope that this contribution can help materialising ideas into actions.

Book The Formation of Scholars

Download or read book The Formation of Scholars written by George E. Walker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book explores the current state of doctoral education in the United States and offers a plan for increasing the effectiveness of doctoral education. Programs must grapple with questions of purpose. The authors examine practices and elements of doctoral programs and show how they can be made more powerful by relying on principles of progressive development, integration, and collaboration. They challenge the traditional apprenticeship model and offer an alternative in which students learn while apprenticing with several faculty members. The authors persuasively argue that creating intellectual community is essential for high-quality graduate education in every department. Knowledge-centered, multigenerational communities foster the development of new ideas and encourage intellectual risk taking.

Book A Natural Language and Graphics Interface

The project involved more than fifty people overfive years, and included industrial and academic partners from three countries. The main result of the project is a highly sophisticated human-machine interface allowing the construction and interrogation of a common knowledge base in English, French, and German, using both natural language and graphics. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the project. Chapters 2-4 develop specific issues concerning thegrammar models used (functional grammars and unification categorial grammars). Chapter 5 discusses anaphora resolution and Chapter 6 text generation. Chapter 7 explains the integration of text and graphics, and Chapter 8 discusses the knowledge base module. The contributions are theoretically oriented and strongly concerned with generalization and the underlying background of potential further developments.

Book La voie de l excellence acad mique

Download or read book La voie de l excellence acad mique written by Philip G. Altbach and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
