Why are some workers more motivated than others? How does the market economyprovide jobs that meet the expectations of experienced workers? What is the relationship between economic growth and income distribution? Why do people save? Are there any market forces which restrain the tendency towards cumulation of wealth by individuals and enhancement of inequality overgenerations?In this book, Tsuneo Ishikawa systematically examines and evaluates the economic arguments arising from these questions with the overall aim of explaining how income and wealth are produced and distributed. Using empirical data from the US, the UK, and Japan, he examines both the neo-classical andlabour market approaches to income and wealth distribution, assesses the circumstances in which each is most appropriate, and examines to what extent they can be integrated. Unusually, Ishikawa not only analyses income distribution as the consequence of economic activities, but also focuses on theprocess of obtaining income---especially on how the content of different jobs can influence employment and income distribution.In the real market economy, the tax system, social welfare, and the provision of public goods all contribute to income redistribution. Ishikawa acknowledges this, but argues that a correct understanding of how the labour market produces differences in income and wealth is vital for informed study ofthe issue of income redistribution. He suggests, furthermore, that a full understanding of income and wealth in developed market economies may be beneficial in dealing with problems of income distribution in developing economies, while drawing attention to the need for an internationalredistribution of income and wealth.

In particular, they do not agree on how much education improves children's ability to learn or whether the things children learn in school truly improve their chances for success as adults. If schooling increases how much students know and what they know does pay off later, then it is important to ask what schools can do to increase students' learning and earning. The essays in this book report estimates of the effects of learning on earnings and other life outcomes. They also examine whether particular aspects of schooling--such as the age at which children begin school, classroom size, and curriculum--or structural reform--such as national or statewide examinations or school choice--affect learning. Taken together, their findings suggest that liberals are correct in saying that more investment is needed in early education, that class sizes should be further reduced, and that challenging national or state standards should be established. But they also provide support for conservatives who ask for a more demanding curriculum and greater school choice. How important is cognitive ability for education and later occupational outcomes? How do countries differ in the importance of socioeconomic background for education and work? Gary N. Marks argues that in western industrialized countries, pervasive views that socioeconomic background (or class background) has strong and unchanging relationships with education and later socioeconomic outcomes, resistant to policy and social change, are unfounded. Marks provides a large amount of evidence from many countries showing that the influence of socioeconomic background for education is moderate and most often declining, and socioeconomic background has only very weak impacts on adults’ occupation and earnings after taking into account education and cognitive ability. Furthermore, Marks shows that cognitive ability is a more powerful influence than socioeconomic background for educational outcomes, and that in addition to its indirect effects through education has a direct effect on occupation and earnings. Its effects cannot be dismissed as simply another aspect of socioeconomic background, nor do the usual criticisms of ‘cognitive ability’ apply. The declining effects for socioeconomic background and the importance of cognitive ability support several of the contentions of modernization theory. The book contributes to a variety of debates within sociology: quantitative and qualitative approaches, explanatory and non-explanatory theory, the relationship between theory and empirical research, the role of political ideology in research, sociology as a social science, and sociology’s contribution to knowledge about contemporary societies. It will appeal to professionals in the fields of education and sociology as well as postgraduate students and academics involved in the debate.
