Book excerpt: The story of New England's own Mary Cassatt Revolutionary artist Mary Rogers Williams (1857—1907), a baker's daughter from Hartford, Connecticut, biked and hiked from the Arctic Circle to Naples, exhibited from Paris to Indianapolis, trained at the Art Students League, chafed against art world rules that favored men, wrote thousands of pages about her travels and work, taught at Smith College for nearly two decades, but sadly ended up almost totally obscure. Book excerpt: For any woman who last saw forty on her speedometer comes a sparkling new primer for aging—the French way—with grace and style. Frenchwomen of a certain age (over forty) are captivating and complex. They appear younger than their years and remain stylish throughout their lives. They look at birthdays as a celebration of a life well-lived and perhaps a good reason to go shopping before they dress to perfection for a celebration of another anniversaire. American-born journalist and blogger Tish Jett has lived among the French for years and has studied them and stalked them to learn their secrets. Exploring how their wardrobe, beauty, diet, and hair rituals evolve with time and how some aspects of their signature styles never change, Jett shows how Frenchwomen know their strengths, hide their weaknesses, and never talk about their fears, failures, or flaws. After all, in France, beauty, style, and charm have no expiration dates!

Book Living Forever Chic

Download or read book Living Forever Chic written by Tish Jett and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why French women of a certain age are the consummate hostesses, homemakers, and style icons--and how you can be, too. Frenchwomen--particularly those 40 and over--are role models for stylish and gracious living, what the French call l'art de vivre. American-born fashion journalist Tish Jett, who has studied these women for years, shared their beauty secrets in her first book, Forever Chic. Now she explores why Frenchwomen of a certain age are master hostesses and homemakers, expert practioners of les bonnes manières as well as everyday elegance, savoir-faire, and as a result, la joie de vivre. Jett explains how to entertain like a Frenchwoman, including a glimpse into the typical French larder from which a delicious meal can be thrown together with ease, to detailed instruction on laying a beautiful table and crafting a perfect cheese plate (did you know that when cutting from a wedge of cheese, slice from the back to the point, which is the "heart" of the cheese, and as such considered the best part and not to be lopped off so others cannot enjoy it). She explores everyday style and elegance, disclosing how to create that special bien dans sa peau (to feel good about oneself) sensation so coveted by Frenchwomen. Jett also shares the importance of discipline, which goes hand in hand with beauty--a well-ordered closet, be it for clothes or linens, translates to easy everyday elegance. With tips on adjusting your beauty and style regimes seasonally, charmingly packaged with color illustrations, Living Forever Chic is a delightful gift for the Francophile in your life.

Book Forever Erma

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller: This anthology of Erma Bombeck’s most memorable and humorous essays is a tribute to one of America’s sharpest wits. When she began writing her regular newspaper column in 1965, Erma Bombeck’s goal was to make housewives laugh. Thirty years later, she had published more than four thousand columns, and earned countless laughs—from housewives, presidents, and everyone in between. With grace, good humor, and razor-sharp prose, she gently skewered every aspect of the American family. This collection holds the best of her columns—not just her famous quips, but also the heartbreaking observations that gave her writing such weight. In 1969, Erma wrote: “screaming kids, unpaid bills, green leftovers, husbands behind newspapers, basketballs in the bathroom. They’re real . . . they’re warm . . . they’re the only bit of normalcy left in this cockeyed world, and I’m going to cling to it like life itself.” With what Publishers Weekly calls her “infectious sense of human absurdity,” Erma Bombeck’s writing remains a timeless examination of the still-cockeyed world. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When night comes, look at the sky. If you see a falling star, dont wonder why, just make a wish. Trust me, it will come true, because I did and found Jesus Christ. Sometimes we think that things will never change in life. I dont know anyone who has not yet experienced pressure of one kind or another in life. It may raise its head swiftly and unexpectedly. Or we may see and feel it coming slowly but surely, like a slight crack in the wall of a building going up or down. You might arrive late for some event and miss something special. This is a minor pressure, and it usually does not last long; its an everyday occurrence that does not really matter very much. There are many such pressures. On the other hand, the pressure of realising that the dream you had has failed to come true may overcome you. You may feel depressed because of the loss of your spouse, the chaos in the workplace, the loss of friends, or the insincerity of those you considered friends, a lack of understanding on the part of your family, heartache that never seems to end, or feeling that God does not hear your prayer. There are more types of pressure than there is grass growing on the plains of the Highveld. Do not give up when you still have something to give. I know that through Christ I am strong enough to make all my dreams come true. I know love, therefore I give love. I recognise that my love has great value and must be reciprocated. If my unconditional love is taken for granted, it doesnt disappear. I am quite capable of articulating my needs. I know that with God the world is my playground, but without God I will just be played with. I understand that my life experiences are merely lessons meant to bring me closer to self-knowledge and unconditional self-love. I know that I will at times have to inspire others to reach the potential God gave them. I know my past, understand my present and face my future. I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today. Jim Rohn says that happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.

See No Evil is a supernatural thriller about witchcraft, reincarnation, and murder in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The story opens as Lauren Freeman touches the worn leather binding of The Chronicle of the Coven. She sees a flash of knives and hears a strange chorus of voices in her head. Lauren is undeterred. A newly divorced single mother, she is a graduate student in history writing a book about American witch trials with her professor Jackie Pappas. Lauren needs the money the book will bring. Its focus is a mysterious event that took place in 1692 when seven convicted “witches” vanished from their prison cells on the eve of their executions and were never seen again. Lauren and Jackie’s research begins to uncover bizarre reports. Then, suddenly, Jackie is dead, and Lauren is left to write their book alone. Lauren knows that Jackie was murdered and that if she is not careful, she will be next. Lauren’s battle to avenge Jackie’s death and save her own life takes her from Wiccan festivals to ancient cemeteries to the bowels of dark libraries. After her son’s kidnapping, multiple murder attempts, and a chase through labyrinthine subway tunnels, Lauren finally confronts the perpetrator of these horrific events and acknowledges that, even in the everyday, things are often not as they seem. “See No Evil pits an intrepid historical researcher against folktales of witchcraft and reincarnation in a suspenseful tale reminiscent . . . of Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby. It will keep you on the edge of your chair. Be sure to read this one with all of the lights turned on.” —The Armchair Detective “Shapiro exhibits great talent at characterization. The book is well-paced and the entire story is engrossing. I enjoyed See No Evil immensely.” —Mystery News “This masterpiece encompasses an array of thrilling elements: danger, witchcraft, history, love and suspense. The story is eerie and seductive and the author magically ends almost every chapter with some kind of shock.” —Gothic Journal “Barbara Shapiro has achieved notice as a master of mystery.” —The Boston Globe on The Safe Room B.A. Shapiro is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Art Forger, five additional novels, four screenplays, and a nonfiction book. She is the recipient of the 2013 New England Book Award for Fiction, a 2013 Massachusetts Must-Read Book award, and a 2012 Boston Globe Best Crime Book award.
