Book Protocol for Landsat Based Monitoring of Landscape Dynamics in North Coast and Cascades Network Parks

Download or read book Protocol for Landsat Based Monitoring of Landscape Dynamics in North Coast and Cascades Network Parks written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape dynamics refers to a large suite of ecological and geomorphological processes occurring across broad spatial scales. As part of Vital Signs Monitoring, the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) of the National Park Service developed a protocol for monitoring landscape dynamics using remote sensing. Protocol implementation involves cooperative work with the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing in Ecology (LARSE) at Oregon State University, leveraging their use of Landsat remotely sensed imagery to detect landscape change. LARSE has developed a set of algorithms called LandTrendr (Landsat-based Detection of Trends in Disturbance and Recovery).

Book Vegetation and Soil Monitoring Protocol for the Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network Version 2

Download or read book Vegetation and Soil Monitoring Protocol for the Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network Version 2 written by Stepanie Perles and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This protocol outlines the justification, objectives, and procedures developed for long-term monitoring of vegetation and soil throughout the National Parks Service's (NPS) Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network (ERMN) within the Inventory and Monitoring Program. Included in this protocol are: (1) background, rationale, and objectives for monitoring of vegetation and soil, (2) sampling design, (3) field methods, (4) data management, analysis, and reporting, (5) personnel requirements and training, and (6) operational requirements. Detailed Standard Operating Procedures that describe how all aspects of the protocol are implemented are included at the end of this document.

Book The Wildlife Techniques Manual

Download or read book The Wildlife Techniques Manual written by Nova J. Silvy and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 1133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A standard text in a variety of courses, the Techniques Manual, as it is commonly called, covers every aspect of modern wildlife management and provides practical information for applying the hundreds of methods described in its pages. To effectively incorporate the explosion of new information in the wildlife profession, this latest edition is logically organized into a two-volume set: Volume 1 is devoted to research techniques and Volume 2 focuses on management methodologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography documents literature addressing the design and implementation of vegetation monitoring. It provides resources managers, ecologists, and scientists access to the great volume of literature addressing many aspects of vegetation monitoring: planning and objective setting, choosing vegetation attributes to measure, sampling design, sampling methods, statistical and graphical analysis, and communication of results. Over half of the 1400 references have been annotated. Keywords pertaining to the type of monitoring or method are included with each bibliographic entry. Keyword index.

Book Implementation of Landscape Dynamics Monitoring at the North Coast and Cascades Network

Download or read book Implementation of Landscape Dynamics Monitoring at the North Coast and Cascades Network written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the first implementation of the "Protocol for Landsat-Based Monitoring of Landscape Dynamics at North Coast and Cascades Network Park" (Kennedy et al. 2007a). The Protocol contains a detailed description of the methodology for the NCCN landscape dynamics monitoring and provides the context for this report. In this report, we summarize the changes made to the original protocol methodology during its implementation. We also provide the results of the 2004/2005-2006 change detection analysis and validation for MORA, NOCA and OLYM. Lastly, we evaluate the ability of this protocol to address the NCCN's landscape dynamics monitoring goals.

Book Rare Woodland and Forest Community Monitoring Protocol for Acadia National Park

Download or read book Rare Woodland and Forest Community Monitoring Protocol for Acadia National Park written by Geraldine L. Tierney and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acadia National Park (ACAD) lies within a transition zone of the Maine coastline, containing ecological communities typical of both southwestern and “downeast” coastal Maine. Eleven of these communities, or “associations” as defined within the United States National Vegetation Classification, are rare within the state of Maine, and one is globally rare. The NPS Northeast Temperate Network (NETN) is establishing a long-term forest monitoring program in 10 national park units within the northeastern US. This program is designed to detect trends in forest condition. At ACAD, the network has installed 176 permanent forest plots. This sample size will allow detection of trends in park forests overall, as well as in some specific ecological communities. However, this effort will not yield sufficient sample sizes in rare community associations to assess trends in the condition of these communities. Rare communities are of particular management and conservation interest at ACAD, because they are rare and because they may be particularly sensitive to anthropogenic (human caused) impacts. This protocol was designed to provide data for the assessment of status and trend in rare woodland and forest communities within ACAD, and was adapted from the NETN Long-term Forest Monitoring Protocol.

Book Vegetation Community Monitoring Protocol for the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network

Download or read book Vegetation Community Monitoring Protocol for the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network written by Kevin M. James and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation community monitoring in the HTLN parks is designed to detect and describe changes in prairie, savanna-woodland and forested communities. There are three primary objectives for the monitoring defined in this protocol: 1. Describe the species composition, structure and diversity of prairie, savanna-woodland and forested communities; 2. Determine temporal changes in the species composition, structure and diversity of prairie, savanna-woodland and forested communities; 3. Determine the relationship between temporal and spatial changes and environmental variables including specific management practices.
