Book Forest Conditions in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Conditions in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve Classic Reprint written by T. W. Dwight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Conditions in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve Sir, - I submit herewith a report which has been prepared by Mr. T. W. Dwight of his investigations of last season in regard to the relation of the Species of timber in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve, the effect of the methods of lumbering followed on their reproduction, and the extent to which natural reproduction has followed. The work! That has been done by Mr. Dwight in this way will be of great assistance in determining the methods which are to be followed in the cutting of timber so as to ensure the natural reproduction of the best species. Investigations of this kind enable us to plan methods with greater certainty that the results will be those that we intended to reach. It is important that we should have a thorough understanding of natural reproduction and of the factors which govern it, as we must depend on it very largely for the reproduction of our forests, as reproduction by artificial means will be too expensive to be used extensively at the present time, and we should resort to it only where natural reproduction is clearly not sufficient to accomplish the work. I would recommend that this report of Mr. Dwight's be printed as a bulletin of this Branch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Types in the Central Rocky Mountains as Affected by Climate and Soil A brief review of the physiological work and of the conclusions which have already been presented is here given. The historic concept of a difference between tree species as to shade toler ance or photosynthetic capacity has been borne out by observations on the growth rate during growing seasons and the sap densities at the end of these seasons, in which the several species were subjected to identical conditions. The six species considered seem to be photosynthetically effective in the follow ing decreasing order: Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, bristlecone pine, yellow pine, and limber pine. Book The Rocky Mountain Timber Situation 1970 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rocky Mountain Timber Situation 1970 Classic Reprint written by Alan W. Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rocky Mountain Timber Situation, 1970 In addressing the current timber supply situation, some would continue to dramatize it as a timber famine, while others would not. Thus, the basic question has not changed since the last timber supply assessment, but the basis for concern is vastly different. Where before the balance of cut and growth was the major issue, now the availability of forest land for timber production and having to Operate within budgetary and environmental constraints have taken on primary importance. This report is not a duplication of the 1970 National Timber Review.1 Rather, it presents highlights of the forest situation in the Rocky Mountain Forest Survey Sec tion (idaho, Montana, western South Dakota, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah). It describes the resource, the timber supply outlook, and some of the problems associated with increasing the timber output from this region.
