Book Forest Carbon Supply In Nepal

Download or read book Forest Carbon Supply In Nepal written by Sahan Dissanayake and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a choice experiment conducted in Nepal during 2013 to estimate household-level willingness to participate in a village-level program under the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation initiative requiring reductions in fuelwood collection, as a function of the price paid per unit of avoided carbon dioxide emissions. The analysis examines incentives to participate both in villages having formal community forest management, the core institution for implementing Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and villages having only informal forest user groups. Contrary to previous findings in the literature about participation incentives, but in keeping with other recent studies of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation pilots in Nepal, this study finds that relatively little emission reduction would take place at prices of $1.00 to $5.00 per ton of avoided carbon emissions. Formal community forests will almost certainly be the core institution within which Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation is implemented in Nepal and likely other countries. The study finds that average and median values of payment required for agreement to reduce fuelwood collection are substantially larger for formal forest user groups than in informal communities. This reflects that formal groups likely already have fuelwood collection restrictions in place, whereas informal groups may de facto permit open access extraction. The analysis also suggests that households that are part of informal groups react to Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation very differently than households that are formal group members. Broadly speaking, "underprivileged" formal group member households, such as those who are landless, female-headed, and poor, appear to be warier of fuelwood collection restrictions and thus require higher payments than average respondents. This difference does not appear to carry over to informal group members.

Book Climate Change Carbon Sequestration and Community Forest of Nepal

Download or read book Climate Change Carbon Sequestration and Community Forest of Nepal written by Pabitra Dahal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing evidence of climate change resulting from the continued increase of Green House Gases concentration in the atmosphere has made it a powerful political, social and trade issue. Now, the world is suffering from the impact of climate change on natural resources, agriculture production and so on. Hence, the reduction of Green House Gases emission and their continuously emission monitoring is essential constituent for reducing the global warming. So, to expand the forest area is the best alternative to mitigate the impact of climate change. Accordingly, the estimation of carbon sequestration rate is the crucial component for monitoring the forest carbon. Again, the present world is also talking about the REED, REED+ which also emphasis on the monitoring of forest carbon by estimating carbon stock. Hence this book provides an opportunity to share the knowledge about the calculation procedure of carbon sequestration rate of forest as in the form of biomass carbon and soil organic carbon. Furthermore, this book is useful for those researchers and organization that are involved in the estimation of biomass and soil organic and forest carbon monitoring.

Book Carbon Sequestration in Different Forest Types of Mid Hills of Nepal

Download or read book Carbon Sequestration in Different Forest Types of Mid Hills of Nepal written by Bishnu Prasad Shrestha and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are natural carbon sink and play an important role in sequestrating the atmospheric carbon into biomass and soil. The goal of reducing carbon source and increasing carbon sink can be achieved through effective protection and conservation of carbon pools in the existing forest, and managing a forest in a sustainable way. Quantification of sequestrated carbon in different forest types with different management regimes and soil profile could be important for better planning of natural resources, and the making of good mitigation strategy for climate change effects. This book presents soil and vegetation carbon pools of different forest types in mountain forest ecosystems. It also provides the effect of altitude and aspect in carbon storage, and relationship of species diversity on carbon stock. This book is useful for development policy maker, non-governmental organization, forestry professionals as well as academicians in the field of forestry, climate change and natural resource management.

Book Mapping Carbon Stock Using Geospatial Data in Tropical Forest of Nepal

Download or read book Mapping Carbon Stock Using Geospatial Data in Tropical Forest of Nepal written by Mbaabu Purity and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests reduce impacts of climate change by sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere and storing carbon in their different parts which include above ground biomass, belowground biomass, forest understory and soil. This storage depends on forest ecosystem management, disturbances and climate variation among others. The impact of forest management activities on the ability of forests to sequester and store atmospheric carbon is of increasing scientific concern. A quantitative understanding of how forest management enhances carbon storage is lacking for most forest types because few studies have been conducted. Therefore, this study estimated and compared the above ground biomass (AGB)/carbon stock of two forest types under different forest management regimes. Very high resolution Geoeye satellite images and airborne LiDAR data were used for this study. Total AGB was estimated by allometric equation using DBH and tree height measured in the field. The average carbon stock was found to be 244 t C/ha and 140 t C/ha for community and government forest respectively. Based on the findings, the conclusion is that forest management significantly affects the carbon stock of a forest.

Book Community Forestry in Nepal

Download or read book Community Forestry in Nepal written by Richard Thwaites and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community forestry focuses on the link between forest resources and livelihoods and contributes to forest conservation and reforestation. It is widespread in Nepal, with a very high proportion of the rural population involved, and is widely recognized as one of the most successful examples of community forestry in Asia. Through a combination of literature reviews and original research, this volume explores key experiences and outcomes of community forestry in Nepal over the last four decades as a model for improving forest management and supporting local livelihoods. The book takes a critical approach, recognizing successes, especially in forest conservation and restoration, along with mixed outcomes in terms of poverty reduction and benefits to forest users. It recognizes the way that community forestry has continued to evolve to meet new challenges, including the global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and conservation, as well as national demographic and social changes due to large-scale labour migration and the growing remittance economy. In addition to examining the changes and responses, the book explores ways that community forestry in Nepal might move forward. Lessons from Nepal have relevance to community forestry and community-based approaches to natural resource management around the world that are also experiencing global pressures and opportunities.

Book Why Forests Why Now

Download or read book Why Forests Why Now written by Frances Seymour and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical forests are an undervalued asset in meeting the greatest global challenges of our time—averting climate change and promoting development. Despite their importance, tropical forests and their ecosystems are being destroyed at a high and even increasing rate in most forest-rich countries. The good news is that the science, economics, and politics are aligned to support a major international effort over the next five years to reverse tropical deforestation. Why Forests? Why Now? synthesizes the latest evidence on the importance of tropical forests in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in climate change and development and to readers already familiar with the problem of deforestation. It makes the case to decisionmakers in rich countries that rewarding developing countries for protecting their forests is urgent, affordable, and achievable.
