Book Foreign Owned Banks in the U S

Download or read book Foreign Owned Banks in the U S written by Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-10-26 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxieties about the declining influence of U.S. banks in international markets made headlines, and prompted Congressional inquiries, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. More recently, however, concern about U.S. banks' competitiveness overseas has given way to alarm about the growing market share of foreign banks in U.S. markets. By one estimate, foreign banks now hold nearly 50 percent of all existing commercial and industrial loans made to U.S. businesses. Moreover, foreign banks made these gains swiftly, more than doubling their share of the U.S. market in the past 10 years. Conceptually, a firm can increase its market share by charging lower prices than its rivals and/or by producing higher quality products and services than its rivals. There is some empirical evidence that foreign banks may have employed both strategies, underpricing U.S. banks in some types of loans and offering higher quality service than U.S. banks in some product lines. In competitive markets, these strategies will reduce profits – low price strategies reduce per unit revenues, and high quality strategies increase per unit costs – unless they generate higher unit sales or allow the bank to charge higher prices. Consistent with this, low profitability has been a chronic problem for foreign banks operating in the U.S.

Book Foreign Owned Banks

Download or read book Foreign Owned Banks written by Małgorzata Iwanicz-Drozdowska and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of the role of foreign-owned banks for credit growth, financial stability and economic growth in the post-communist European countries. Using data covering 20 countries over the period from 1995 to 2015, the authors analyse the evolution of banking sectors in CESEE after the transformation in the historical context. This helps draw a new picture of the role of financial development and EU accession in that region, being also a lesson for other countries or regions in transition. Additionally, as the Global Financial Crisis has left a stigma in banking sectors, the book shows its impact on the post-communist banking sectors. As the foreign banks dominate the banking sectors in CESEE countries (the stake of foreign-owned banks is below 50% of assets in only five out of 20 countries), their strategies materially impact the development of CESEE banking sectors, which warrants our scientific exploration. Arriving at a clear concluding point of view on the role of foreign-owned banks and providing insights for future policy of CESEEs towards foreign presence in their banking sectors, this book should be of interest to academics, students, and policymakers.

Book Foreign Owned Banks in the U S

Download or read book Foreign Owned Banks in the U S written by Robert DeYoung and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign-owned U.S. banks have been chronically unprofitable for more than a decade. We employ a profit efficiency model introduced by Berger, Hancock, and Humphrey (1993), modified to be less sensitive to variations in asset size, to estimate the relative profit efficiency of 62 foreign-owned and 240 U.S.-owned banks between 1985 and 1990. Our results indicate that foreign-owned banks were significantly less profit-efficient than were U.S.-owned banks, primarily due to foreign banks' reliance on expensive purchase funds. For foreign-owned banks, the results are consistent with a strategy of sacrificing profits in exchange for fast growth and increase market share during the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper introduces a comprehensive database on bank ownership for 137 countries over 1995-2009, and reviews foreign bank behavior and impact. It documents substantial increases in foreign bank presence, with many more home and host countries. Current market shares of foreign banks average 20 percent in OECD countries and 50 percent elsewhere. Foreign banks have higher capital and more liquidity, but lower profitability than domestic banks do. Only in developing countries is foreign bank presence negatively related with domestic credit creation. During the global crisis foreign banks reduced credit more compared to domestic banks, except when they dominated the host banking systems.

Book Internationalization of Banks

Download or read book Internationalization of Banks written by Federica Sist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews banking internationalization by considering the new paradigms of globalization. The author primarily analyses why and how banks internationalize through equity deals, and the effect of regulation and market integration on the formation of deals, which allows authorities to manage the banking structure. This is a unique work that describes the relevance of the ownership model and cultural features of the partners and the key factors that help in choosing the market in which the banks bring activities abroad. The book addresses market characteristics, and new scenarios that should impact banks’ internationalization strategies and ability to achieve success in deals that capture the attention of both researchers and practitioners.

Book The Dynamics of Foreign Bank Ownership

Download or read book The Dynamics of Foreign Bank Ownership written by Giovanni Majnoni and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early start of the process of bank restructuring and privatization in Hungary provides a longer and richer amount of evidence than that available for any other transition economy. The authors analyze the dynamics of bank restructuring in Hungary with a focus on the role played by foreign ownership. They explore the performance over time of foreign-owned Hungarian banks and study the extent to which efficiency gains are affected by the chosen acquisition strategy-strategic acquisition in contrast with investment in a newly established bank (greenfield investment)-or by the management style adopted after the acquisition. The authors supplement previous results on the effects of foreign bank ownership in three ways. First, they explicitly consider the time span required for the change of ownership to affect bank performance. Second, the authors explore how important the chosen acquisition strategy is for the success of an acquisition. And third, they study how relevant the adopted management style is to this end, as proxied by the degree of reliance on foreign management.
