Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions and World Peace, Vol. 3: Address at Portland, Maine, October 10, 1912 Furthermore, it must never be forgotten that it was because Dr. Sun and so many of his compatriots were trained in our missionary schools and had come under the Christian influences of the West that the success of this wonderful movement for better government was made possible. The nations are beginning to realize more and more what they owe to the missionaries. A Chinese leader was asked when the recent revolution began, and with great wisdom he replied, The day Robert Morrison landed in Canton. We must not forget the forward look in this summary. There are in the Protestant mission ary schools of the East nearly students of all grades under missionary training. In these schools are being shaped the future leaders Of every nation. The work done by our missionary teachers in training Chinese students has been one of the largest factors in helping to bind China to us. What is true in China is true else where, and is to become more and more true as the schools for Chris tian education are being rapidly increased. It is these students of to-day, the leaders of to-morrow, that are to bind this world together. There would have been no new China or Korea or India or Turkey if there had been no missionaries, and the diplomacy of the world would have been powerless without their aid. Western civilization, with. Its accompanying evils, is everywhere crowding into the East it is the Christian missionary, educator and physician, that serves as the antidote to all these evils and shows what Christianity is. It is the missionary who has been the peacemaker, and it is his influence that is making possible a closer oneness between the nations. Book excerpt: The eleven contributors to this volume come to grips with the hard realities of controlling war in our modern, interrelated world. All of them deal directly with the role of law in the management of conflict. From Cyril E. Black's introductory chapter, "Conflict Management and World Order," to Richard J. Barnet's concluding chapter, "Toward the Control of International Violence: The Limits and the Possibilities of Law," each expert moves from analysis of some immediate problem of international legal control to the direct application of law to war. The contributors include Tom J. Farer, Rosalyn Higgins, John Norton Moore, Daniel Wiles, William B. Bader, Arnold Kramish, Mason Willrich, W. Michael Reisman, and Harold Feiveson. Conflict Management is the third volume in a large-scale collaborative research project intended to focus the attention of international lawyers and social scientists on the near future of the international legal order. A brochure describing the entire series is available. Cyril E. Black is Duke Professor of Russian History and Director of the Center of International Studies, Princeton University. Richard A. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 1021 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3 of the official history of Australian peacekeeping, humanitarian and post-cold war operations explores Australia's involvement in six overseas missions following the end of the Gulf War: Cambodia (1991–99); Western Sahara (1991–94); the former Yugoslavia (1992–2004); Iraq (1991); Maritime Interception Force operations (1991–99); and the contribution to the inspection of weapons of mass destruction facilities in Iraq (1991–99). These missions reflected the increasing complexity of peacekeeping, as it overlapped with enforcement of sanctions, weapons inspections, humanitarian aid, election monitoring and peace enforcement. Granted full access to all relevant Australian Government records, David Horner and John Connor provide readers with a comprehensive and authoritative account of Australia's peacekeeping operations in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Book The Vietnam War and International Law Volume 3

Download or read book The Vietnam War and International Law Volume 3 written by Richard A. Falk and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues of the war that have provoked public controversy and legal debate over the last two years—the Cambodian invasion of May-June 1970, the disclosure in November 1969 of the My Lai massacre, and the question of war crimes—are the focus of Volume 3. As in the previous volumes, the Civil War Panel of the American Society of International Law has endeavored to select the most significant legal writing on the subject and to provide, to the extent possible, a balanced presentation of opposing points of view. Parts I and II deal directly with the Cambodian, My Lai, and war crimes debates. Related questions are treated in the rest of the volume: constitutional debate on the war; the distribution of functions among coordinate branches of the government; the legal status of the insurgent regime in the struggle for control of South Vietnam; prospects for settlement without a clear-cut victory; and Vietnam's role in general world order. The articles reflect the views of some forty contributors: among them, Jean Lacouture, Henry Kissinger, John Norton Moore, Quincy Wright, William H. Rhenquist, and Richard A. Falk. Originally published in 1972.
