Book Foreign Exchange Exposure on the Spanish Stock Market

Download or read book Foreign Exchange Exposure on the Spanish Stock Market written by Pedro Martínez-Solano and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the foreign exchange exposure of a sample of 71 non financial companies quoted on the Spanish Stock Exchange Market between January 1992 and December 1997. The level of exposure was obtained from time-series regressions between monthly returns of firms or portfolios, as a dependent variable and the monthly market return and the nominal effective exchange-rate change of the Spanish currency as independent variables. The second part of our study was dedicated to the analysis of levels of exports, imports and foreign debt as possible explanatory factors of exchange rate risk exposure, as well as a study of effects of foreign currency hedging, measured through proxies, on the levels of economic exposure. Then, a cross-sectional regression between the exposure coefficients, as a dependent variable, and the previous factors as independent variables was carried out. The results indicate the existence of economic exposure in about twenty percent of companies and that exports and imports are decisive factors in the level of economic exposure to exchange rate risk. Exports have a positive effect on returns as a result of the exchange rate changes, whereas imports have a negative effect. Furthermore, the results suggest that economic exposure is inversely related to the size of firms and directly with Forex adjustment, which have been used as foreign currency hedging proxy; these results would seem to confirm that foreign currency hedging reduces exchange- rate exposure.

Book Stock Liquidity Around Credit Risk Changes

Download or read book Stock Liquidity Around Credit Risk Changes written by Pilar Abad-Romero and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the existing relationship between announcements of debt rating changes for companies listed on the Spanish stock exchange and the liquidity of their stocks for the period of 2000 to 2010. Liquidity around the announcement day is analyzed using different liquidity measures proposed by the equity market literature. The study also examines the factors that determine the intensity of the announcement's effect on liquidity. The evidence shows that both positive and negative announcements (of improvement and decline in credit rating) lead to an increase in liquidity, which is anticipated by the market in both cases. Regarding the factors that determine intensity, it is observed that investors combine the information included in the announcement with the characteristics of the issuing company. Still, the recent economic and financial crisis, in which the role of the rating agencies has been greatly questioned, has not changed the intensity of these effects on liquidity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the findings of the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) Update for Spain. Although there is a core of strong banks that are well managed and appear resilient to further shocks, vulnerabilities remain. Substantial progress has been made in reforming the former savings banks, and the most vulnerable institutions have either been resolved or are being restructured. Recent measures address the most problematic part of banks’ portfolios. Moving ahead, a further restructuring and recapitalization of some of the remaining weaker banks may be needed as a result of deteriorating economic conditions.

Book Exchange Rate Exposure

Download or read book Exchange Rate Exposure written by Kathryn M. Dominguez and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we examine the relationship between exchange rate movements and firm value. We estimate the exchange rate exposure of publicly listed firms in a sample of eight (non-US) industrialized and emerging markets, and find that a significant percentage of these firms are indeed exposed. These results differ substantially from most previous studies in the literature that find little evidence of exposure. In robustness checks we find that: (i) the choice of exchange rate matters, and using the trade-weighted exchange rate is likely to understate the extent of exposure, (ii) conditioning on the value-weighted vs. the equally-weighted market index has little effect on estimated exposure, while conditioning on the international index does change the estimate of exposure, (iii) the extent of exposure is not a result of a spurious correlation between random variables with high variances, (iv) exposure increases with the return horizon, (v) within a country and within an industry, exposure coefficients are roughly evenly split between positive and negative values, (vi) averaging across the (absolute value of the) significant exposure coefficients in our sample of countries, we find an exposure coefficient of about 0.5, (vii) the extent of exposure is not sensitive to the sample period, but the set of firms that is exposed does vary over time, and (viii) the sign of the exposure coefficients changes across subperiods for about half of the firms of our sample. We find that exposure is not systematically related to firm size, industry affiliation, multinational status, foreign sales, international assets or industry-level trade.

Book The World s First Stock Exchange

Download or read book The World s First Stock Exchange written by Lodewijk Petram and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of the sophisticated financial hub that was 17th-century Amsterdam “does a fine job of bringing history to life” (Library Journal). The launch of the Dutch East India Company in 1602 initiated Amsterdam’s transformation from a regional market town into a dominant financial center. The Company introduced easily transferable shares, and within days buyers had begun to trade them. Soon the public was engaging in a variety of complex transactions, including forwards, futures, options, and bear raids, and by 1680 the techniques deployed in the Amsterdam market were as sophisticated as any we practice today. Lodewijk Petram’s award-winning history demystifies financial instruments by linking today’s products to yesterday’s innovations, tying the market’s operation to the behavior of individuals and the workings of the world around them. Traveling back in time, Petram visits the harbor and other places where merchants met to strike deals. He bears witness to the goings-on at a notary’s office and sits in on the consequential proceedings of a courtroom. He describes in detail the main players, investors, shady characters, speculators, and domestic servants and other ordinary folk, who all played a role in the development of the market and its crises. His history clarifies concerns that investors still struggle with today—such as fraud, the value of information, trust and the place of honor, managing diverging expectations, and balancing risk—and does so in a way that is vivid, relatable, and critical to understanding our contemporary world.

This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Technical Note discusses the results of the stress testing of banking system resilience in Spain. The results indicate that some banks may have difficulty enduring additional pressures on their profitability. In addition, some banks are vulnerable to market losses arising from a rapid increase in interest rates, given their significant exposures to fixed income securities. Near-term funding and liquidity risks seem limited, but funding challenges are likely to grow. Several banks are heavily reliant on central bank funding. Based on these findings, the authorities are encouraged to continue to monitor closely interest rate and government bond market risks in their stress testing exercises.

Book Analyzing the Interest Rate Risk of Banks Using Time Series of Accounting Based Data

Download or read book Analyzing the Interest Rate Risk of Banks Using Time Series of Accounting Based Data written by Oliver Entrop and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the first thorough analysis of the interest risk of German banks on an individual bank level. We develop a new method that is based on time series of accountingbased data to quantify the interest risk of banks and apply it to analyze the German banking system. We find evidence that our model yields a significantly better fit of banks' internally quantified interest rate risk than a standard approach that relies on one-point-in-time data, and that the interest rate risk differs between banks of different size and banking group. Additionally, we find structural differences between trading book and non-trading book institutions.
