Book Foreign Direct Investment and Its Contributions to Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in Vietnam 1986 2001

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Its Contributions to Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in Vietnam 1986 2001 written by Thi Phuong Hoa Nguyen and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2004 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, Vietnam experienced high economic growth, significant reduction in poverty and remarkable inflows of foreign direct investment. The book aims at examining impacts of foreign direct investment on economic growth and poverty reduction in Vietnam during 1986-2001 analytically and empirically. The triangulation methodology is used. Conclusions are that foreign direct investment contributed significantly to Vietnam's growth and this worked mainly through capital accumulation and intra-industry spillover. Economic growth in turn reduced poverty. Direct impact of foreign direct investment on poverty was insignificant at the national level but significant in three localities where most foreign investors located. Foreign direct investment thus helped reduce poverty in Vietnam.

Book FDI and Development in Vietnam

Download or read book FDI and Development in Vietnam written by Hoang Mai Pham and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Vietnam's economy moves further along the path of development, this book presents urgent lessons for policymakers from the country's first decade of experience of FDI. A mere decade after the start of its reforms towards a market-oriented economy, a World Bank report named Vietnam the second largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI). Drawing on a wealth of hitherto unpublished data and qualitative analysis, this work critically examines the overall impact of FDI on Vietnams economy, as well as the performance of individual projects. A major finding is that government policy and intervention have been important in channelling foreign investment flows towards national and regional development goals. This book is also a significant addition to the debates on FDI-induced effects such as technology transfer and employment creation in developing countries. It will be of great interest to all those researching or involved in policymaking in transitional economies in particular.

Book Foreign Direct Investment as a Tool for Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment as a Tool for Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries written by Ronald K.S. Wakyereza and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textbook experience of poverty can be witnessed in a number of developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and Latin America. Accordingly, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been identified as an important tool for poverty reduction, as it is noted to accelerate economic growth and employment in a nation, and is currently an essential issue for countries such as Uganda. This book finds that Ragnar’s 1953 ‘Vicious-Circle of Poverty’ remains undisputed even today, showing that attracting FDI is not the end, but that a nation’s absorption capacity is equally paramount. The implications of the FDI ‘frog-leap theory’ for developing countries and the Community Capital Absorption Capacity Development (CCACD) framework provide plausible poverty reduction approaches in the 21st century. Without such measures, bringing an end to poverty is likely to elude governments and multinational corporations in developing countries.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Emerging Markets Vietnam and Korea

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Emerging Markets Vietnam and Korea written by Roger Ramp and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht (HWR) Berlin), course: International Corporate Finance, language: English, abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is found almost everywhere in the world today and closely connected to worldwide globalization. Why do enterprises which are suc-cessfully operating in their home market decide on making investments in unknown and more insecure markets? Why do investment destinations have an interest in admitting foreign investors into the economy? Considering that FDI has grown in importance in the global economy in the last decades, obviously there has to be significant advantages for both sides. The World Investment Report (WIR) of UNCTAD reports in their recent publication (2008) high records in FDI flows in the world (UNCTAD 2008a). While developed countries still attract the largest volume of FDI inflows, developing countries possess the highest growth rate in drawing a significant volume of investment into their economy. Transforming and emerging markets in South, East and Southeast Asia particularly showed rapid development of generated inflows and their economies are prospering. China is a famous exam-ple. In our paper, we would like to introduce a not so well-known little tiger - Vietnam - and South Korea, which is after impressive growth in the last decades due to FDI now on its way to becoming an industrialized country. First we will give a short theoretical overview of FDI. We will not analyze all global flows and development of FDI. Our focus lies in the development and framework of FDI in both above-mentioned countries and answering the question which impact did FDI have on their economic development. Therefore follows an especially economical introduction of both countries and then a deeper look into sectors of FDI. We will give a short classification of development in Vietnam and in S

Book World Scientific Reference On Globalisation In Eurasia And The Pacific Rim In 4 Volumes

Download or read book World Scientific Reference On Globalisation In Eurasia And The Pacific Rim In 4 Volumes written by and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-volume set focuses on a key region of the world which contains four of the biggest emerging economies, a large number of highly dynamic small- and medium-sized emerging economies, and one of the leading advanced industrial countries. It is a region which contains some of the biggest hydrocarbon and mineral deposits in the world, and some of the most energy- and metal-hungry economies in the world. With half the world's population, it is one of the most dynamic regions of the globe in terms of population movement, providing a key focus of foreign investment, both inwards and outwards, with a high degree of technological dynamism. The region plays a central role in the industrial supply networks of the globe. In four volumes, focusing on, respectively, foreign investment, innovation, energy and migration, the set focuses on each of the main elements in the production system in turn — capital, innovation, raw materials and labour. Volume 1 studies patterns of interchange of financial and direct investment within the region, focusing on governance, the development of supply chains, and technology transfer. In Volume 2, the technology theme becomes dominant, with a special focus on digital technology. It includes technical issues like mobile communications standardisation, developmental dimensions, including the role of clusters and science parks, and political economy issues like the rise of techno-nationalism. Volume 3 turns to energy issues — not just issues of supply and demand, but also key problems of climate change, security and sustainability across the Eurasian and Asian landmass. Volume 4 presents the human dimension, looking at people in movement, as workers, citizens, men, women, or colonisers. Among the key issues discussed are the migration from country to town in China, the ‘greying’ of countries like Japan, the effect of war on migration, marriage migration, human trafficking and the depopulation of the Russian Far East. The set is a must-have for anyone keen to understand the region whose manufacturing core can be described, without exaggeration, as the ‘workshop of the world’ of the twenty-first century.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam written by Anh Ngoc Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam has been quite successful in attracting FDI inflows since the inception of economic reform in 1986. The inflow of FDI has contributed significantly to the economic development of Vietnam. Still, the determinants of FDI inflow and its impacts on the economy of Vietnam are under-researched. In this paper we provide an overview of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam and attempt to review of the current status of economic research on the determinants of FDI and its impacts on the economy of Vietnam. Our regression analysis of the determinants of FDI spatial distribution across provinces points to the importance of market, labour and infrastructure in attracting FDI. Government policy as measured by the Provincial Competiveness Index (PCI), however, does not seem to be a significant factor at the provincial level. Foreign investors from different source countries seem to behave differently in choosing the location of investment.

Book The Contribution of Foreign Direct Investment to Economic Growth in Vietnam During the Period 1990 2013

Download or read book The Contribution of Foreign Direct Investment to Economic Growth in Vietnam During the Period 1990 2013 written by Quoc Anh Ho and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of foreign investment (FDI)on economic growth has been a controversial topic of debate among economic researchers. FDI is expected to bring many benefit to recipient countries, however there are also many potential disadvantages from a development point of view (Thirlwall, 2011). This paper will estimate the empirical impact of FDI on GDP growth of Vietnam during the period 1990-2013 and compare the impact between two divided periods: post and after the WTO accession of Vietnam in 2007. Firstly, the result shows that for the whole period, FDI has statistically and economically contribute to the growth of GDP in Vietnam. Secondly, the estimated result provides an evidence that FDI might have crowding out effect on domestic investment. Finally, it is shown that before joining the WTO, domestic source of investment has larger impact than FDI on GDP growth. But after the WTO accession there is weak statistical evidence to support the expectation that the impact of FDI on Vietnam's economic GDP growth has increased.

Book Agricultural Trade Policy Reforms and Trade Liberalisation in the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book Agricultural Trade Policy Reforms and Trade Liberalisation in the Mediterranean Basin written by Aikaterini Kavallari and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilateral and multilateral trade agreements have been gaining attention and relevance in recent years. For the countries around the Mediterranean basin the most important regional trade agreements involved are the Euro-Med Agreements, which influence their trade flows as they aim to promote regional integration. Based on the theory of applied welfare economics, this study analyses empirically the impacts of different policy scenarios on the agricultural sector of Mediterranean countries by using an extended and modified version of the trade policy model AGRISIM. The results show that trade liberalisation, either multilateral or bilateral, would be beneficial for the Mediterranean agricultural markets due to positive welfare effects and should be considered by policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book delineates how the quest for wealth and belief manifests itself in contemporary Vietnam. Based on multi-local and longitudinal ethnographic research, the author examines how wealth is pursued by household members and entrepreneurs. The quest for belief is brought into relief through inquiry into how norms and values have been re-evaluated, altered, subverted or restored. Focusing on the taboo topic of female feticide, The study elucidates why some parents ultimately decide to commit feticide, and why others, especially entrepreneurs, refrain from it. The case of the entrepreneurs shows a possible way out of the "vicious circle" that leads to female feticide and perpetuates gender inequality.
